Don't eat the Juniper berries raw...but when they are boiled and prepared properly can be used for medicinal purposes such as to relieve upset tummy. Juniper tea is often made from the berries. Vlogging edits is not easy, so we do appreciate your efforts Mary "Sunshine!" Your cheery disposition is always a nice welcome. I certainly cannot see you as being anti-social, but it could be that you are full on concentrating on what you are doing...that's all! Happy trails! 🌺

Yes.... the little blue berries are Juniper (Juniper tree). They have some medicinal properties but are best known for their aromatic characteristics AND giving "Gin" it's distinctive aroma and flavor. So... next time you enjoy a "Gin and Tonic", think of the PCT and your lovely "blue berry tree" LOL. Thanks for sharing.... Love yas..... Ax

That's the Western Juniper as their are 11 types and 40 species most being trees and some bushes. The western berries are used to feed chickens to get a gin flavored egg.

Always smart to pack more than minimum food. Those who only plan for ideal conditions are foolhardy and this May especially was not ideal. There are several places to get food/supplies between Big Bear and Wrightwood. Cedar Glen is not too far off trail. The Malt Shop is killer awesome. Hesperia is reachable from the Mojave River Dam. The road walk to the nearest town bus stop isn't too fun, but there's a hiker-friendly bar (Joshua Inn) and Hesperia Lake on the way making for good rest stops. Last is the gas stations at Cajon Pass. Not great choices, but better than nuthin and pretty much right on trail.

My Sawyer Squeeze bag failed in exactly the same place when I walked the Beacons Way. I've bought a Cnoc 3L bag now as they're more robust. Sawyer really do need to address this poor quality seal near the neck of the bag.

Those a Juniper berries. I wouldn't eat then raw like that. They can give a tummy ache. Most varieties are not edible.

Cypress Seeds. Probably a western red cedar (Thuja plicata) They are related to junipers and redwoods. Amazingly it is not a true cedar . . . cedars have needle leaves but cypress do not.

Juniper berries use them to flavor alcohol to Gin. Juniper tar for a drawing agent for boils.

What? Food doesn't come with trail dirt on it? 😂😂😂 I hope you didn't try one of those "blueberries", you would have a rude shock. That's juniper and only one variety is actually used in cooking, and a few are poisonous. Better to keep your distance unless you know what you're picking. OTOH, you'll come upon huckleberries, a wild version of blueberries, around the time you hike Oregon and Washington. Huckleberries come in blue and red varieties and both are sweet. In fact, you'll be able to eat most all the berries you come across on the PNW, some will taste much better than others (huckleberries, thimbleberries, blackberries, raspberries, salmonberries, wild strawberries, all are plentifully and amoung the best).

Yeah was just on trail in Oregon and Washington, lots of huckleberry blossoms, no berries yet, but should be a good year for us and the bears!

Those Sawyer bags are awful to use. Look into Cnoc Vecto bags if possible. You should see other hikers using it. It is quite popular.

The Sawyer bags are pretty notorious sadly, the filters are great mind you! As others have said, the CNOC bags are fantastic in comparison. A fully loaded pack!
