My wife and I were born and lived in Fresno, California for 69 years. In April of 2018, we packed up and moved to Maryville, Tennessee not knowing anybody and leaving our oldest son, friends church and being 62 miles from Yosemite. We could see that California was going down hill faster and faster every year and had to get out. My wife is Type A and had done months of research of places all over the United States and Maryville kept coming to the top for our age and lifestyle. We love the culture here and also do not want people from California, New York, New Jersey, etc. to try and change Tennesseans to their culture but to embrace the Tennesseans' culture. Here, you make eye contact and wave of say "HI" to strangers. Here, churches work together to solve local problems. The church I attend has a Family Life Center with a gym which is open to the public free of charge. There is a homeless problem but the government, churches and volunteers work together to help them. At no charge, my church opens their gym's showers to anyone needing a shower. We also provide the soap, shampoo, towels, etc. if needed. In the winter, when the temperature gets below freezing, our gym is opened as a warming shelter with cots and food for the homeless. We also work with another organization to offer free meals every Friday for anyone in need. This is just my church. Other churches provides meals on other days along with other services. Even Methodists and Baptists work together when a community need comes up. This is just the churches do. Tennessee is know as the volunteer state, not because to the Tennessee VOLS, but because of the volunteer culture. In my view, the one thing that California is better at is the time it takes to complete a construction project. Where a major construction project in California my take months to complete, except for California's High Speed Rail, it may take a year or two to complete here. This excludes the time delays due to the weather. My wife and I both love living here and have never regretted the move. Except for family and friends we left behind, our only regret is that we didn't move here sooner.

Actually East Tennessee is MY home, having been BORN and RAISED here. I tried to buy a house in 2018 but was continually beat by cash offers, until I could no longer afford a home. I still have not been able to purchase a home in my own native East Tennessee. Because prices have shot up unnaturally, while my income has not increased to keep up. Why has this price increase happened? Because of Californians like you moving in with the money to purchase our homes from your overly expensive California land. Now you get to call it "home" when in reality you have priced me out of my own home.

Thank you for welcoming us. It's appreciated MORE than you know! To your point, It is undeniable that the influx of people moving into specific areas like Tennessee, Idaho, Texas, etc., increases competition for housing and resources and, unfortunately, pushes prices up. But please know that the astronomical run-up in housing prices and almost every category of goods and services directly results from sky-high inflation and poor National monetary decisions and not from honest, hard-working, tax-paying Americans seeking better opportunities for their family. We want to postivily contribute. We want to join you in voting for people and policies that made Tennessee a place we wanted to flee to in the first place. People are fleeing California in droves (California is predicted to lose 5 congressional districts in 2030), yet despite the massive migration out of the the state, the cost of living and housing has risen at an unprecedented rate there as well. Please know that most, albeit not all, incoming residents want to assimilate and do not expect or want TN to change.

I love how you’ve shared your story. I was born and raised in Sacramento, CA. I drove trucks there for 24 years. And then found myself as an empty nester, when my youngest daughter moved to New York. I was a single parent. My career led me to meet my husband, who lived and worked in San Jose, CA his whole life. Well, he took an early retirement and I wanted to travel the country and made the decision to do some over the road trucking. He joined me and our transition out of California began when we put our things in storage, and we hit the road for 7 years. During our travels across country, we noticed how affordable it was to live in other states. In the meantime, the cost of living in California was rising. During that 7 years I drove for a company out of Springfield, Missouri as an independent contractor. Eventually, California was trying to pass a bill called AB5, which went against independent contractors. And my company offered all of its contractors that resided in California the option of paying for them to live anywhere they wanted to move. It was during Christmas of 2019, that we found ourselves getting a UHaul truck and moving to Springfield. The quality of life here is amazing! What a difference. And like you, it was a good decision. We later moved my mother here with us. Unfortunately, two years ago, my husband passed away due to a massive heart attack and my mother died of stage 4 breast cancer in 2023. I now live here alone and my kids decided to stay in California. I travel back and forth once or twice a year, but I know at 57, I can’t afford to go back. I bought a house out here in 2022, after my husband died. This same house would cost me about $800,000 in California. My compromise is being away from friends and family. But I’m blessed to have a great church and peace of mind.❤

The humidity can be tough in the south. Unless you work in an office setting. I work in a chemical plant which is hotter inside so if you can imagine. the lack of a 'food culture' should also be looked at as 'opportunity'. The opportunity is there for new innovative restaurants, the entrepreneurs just need to decide that there is money to be made in those businesses. Hard to do given today's economy. You also have to consider that the abundance of quality home cooks somewhat offsets the need

I’m a Nashville native who moved back from Dallas 30 years ago after meeting and marrying my wife in Dallas. During that 30 years we moved away and back several times for work reasons. We now live in Spring Hill, TN - 30 miles south of Nashville. Just a few observations: 1. This family did an excellent job of making this video. Kudos to them. 2. One day shortly after moving from Dallas, we were walking in downtown Nashville and also almost everyone said hi as we passed them on the sidewalk. My wife stopped me and asked if I knew everyone in town. lol. She was amazed. Fortunately, middle TN still has that friendly feel for the most part. 3. A lot of people have moved and continue to move here to middle TN from CA. Almost all of them sing the same song as this family - the burdens of living in CA became just too much. We travel a lot - cruises, resorts, etc. Californians we meet who hear we are from TN ALWAYS ask us what it’s like while also telling us that they intend to move east as soon as they retire, when they become empty nesters, whatever. Our neighbors who moved here who are in their 50s and 60s are all recruiting their children to move here. 4. Weather: in winter we usually have some sort of ice storm followed by some small amount of snow. We do not have snow and ice removal assets to clear the roads. Schools shut down, it’s dangerous to drive, everyone runs asap to the grocery to hoard bread, milk, staples. People new to the area think this is stupid - no fleet of snowplows? Not for a few episodes a year. We also have tornadoes and homeowners insurance is getting expensive. 5. Another complaint is that “people here don’t know how to drive - don’t use their blinkers, etc.” I find this particularly funny because almost no one is from here. Everyone’s brought their bad driving from another state. Generally, the people who voice complaints about drivers or snow removal or whatever haven’t thought before they speak because no one offers an idea of how to improve what they find problematic. I wish they would! We want the best ideas from everyone. 6. As this family stated about Knoxville, people value and live their faith here. And, I’ve found that for most newbies this is a reason they moved. Also, politically we are mostly red. Nashville proper is blue. But it’s not in your face either way. People here are generally tolerant of your religious and political views as long as “you do you” and leave others alone. If you want to mind someone else’s business you’re going to have a problem. And I hope you don’t have a problem with a clerk telling you to “have a blessed day” at checkout. It happens everywhere. And yes our gun laws are lax. But, unlike the man in the video, I’ve never seen a handgun in a public place in all my years of living here. And many establishments prohibit guns on their premises. Enough of this. Have a great day. God bless.
@RelocatingtoEastTN2 ай бұрын
All good points. Especially regarding the fact that "Everyone’s brought their bad driving from another state." Regarding snow removal... I say leave it on the road. Buy some cables or chains or a 4-wheel drive and drive safely. The snow will only be on the road for a few days. I would much rather pay for tire chains than pay the taxes necessary to staff and maintain all of the snow removal equipment required to plow the roads for the 3 to 5 days out of the year that it would be necessary to do so.

I really enjoyed this extremely well put together video! I’m watching from the Toronto area, I think we have some of the same problems as California. @@Himmiefan Many years ago my rationale for not going to church services was that many people who attended church weren't "walking the walk" . Thanks for sharing your story. Glad to see you bringing attention to the housing affordability problem in Tennessee at 18:55. Many of us locals have had to move out of Knoxville because housing prices have risen more than 100% since 2019 while our wages have remained stagnant. Indeed, a lot of this is related to out-of-staters moving into Tennessee during COVID and driving-up the prices.
@RelocatingtoEastTN23 сағат бұрын
Undeniably, the influx of people moving into Tennessee and other states increases competition for housing and resources and, unfortunately, pushes prices up. But please know that the astronomical run-up in housing prices and almost every category of goods and services directly results from sky-high inflation and poor NATIONAL monetary decisions and not from honest, hard-working, tax-paying Americans seeking better opportunities for their family. People are fleeing California in droves (California is predicted to lose 5 congressional districts in 2030), but the cost of living and housing has risen at an unprecedented rate there as well. The vast majority of fleeing families do not come with a million in cash. A few are... but most aren't.

Keep in mind, we still had the Calif nerves out in public. I told my wife to get ready to run to the truck if they came over and I would deal with them. One of them did walk over to our table and introduce himself. All they wanted was to know if there was a Harley Davidson dealership in town. LOL. Here’s my take on this: Welcome to TN! We are happy to have you. I’ve found that Californians that have moved here are really good people who are trying to escape what’s happening over there. They definitely add something to the culture and economy. The unintended consequences of the influx of people have driven up real estate prices to where 90% of the people who have lived in Knoxville for 5+ years cannot afford to buy a house anymore. That’s crazy. So basically we watch everyone from the U.S. buy houses here while we are unable to do so. I know a guy who was a firefighter is LA for 20 years, sold his house, bought 10 houses here for cash and rents out 9 of them for $3K+ per month. So, there’s definitely pluses and minuses.
@RelocatingtoEastTN2 ай бұрын
Undeniably, the influx of people moving into Tennessee and other states increases competition for housing and resources and, unfortunately, pushes prices up. But please know that the astronomical run-up in housing prices and almost every category of goods and services is a direct result of sky-high inflation and poor National monetary decisions and not from honest, hard-working, tax-paying Americans seeking better opportunities for their family. People are fleeing California in droves (California is predicted to lose 5 congressional districts in 2030), but the cost of living and housing has risen at an unprecedented rate there as well. The vast majority of fleeing families do not come with huge stacks of cash. SOME are... most aren't.

First, I want to say, WELCOME TO THE SOUTH! I escaped from Orange County, CA in 1992. I met my wife at Cal State Long Beach and we moved the day we were married. The south gave us SO MANY opportunities that CA would never had. My wife was able to be a stay at home mom and we were able to buy a house. I now call the Atlanta suburbs home and have lived here, longer than I did in CA. I DO NOT regret moving here, although it is not perfect. I do feel it is a better place to raise a family and the pros WAY OUTWEIGH the cons! Tennessee is an INCREDIBLE state, so WELOME Y'ALL!!! GOD BLESS!

I grew up in Erie PA. in the 50's and 60's then moved to southern CA in 1970. It was working in the brutal winters living off the shores of Lake Erie that drove me to the sunshine state. I remember getting off the plane at LAX and the warm breeze hitting my face in the middle of January when just 5 hours earlier there was a blizzard when I took off. I never thought I would ever go back east again. But there comes a time for choosing what is best for your family above all and so I am grateful that most of my grandchildren are safe and home schooled and out of California. And hopefully if we do a good job of educating our children and they theirs ,we will change the course of history for the better. “You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream -- the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order --or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path.” Ronald Regan

Very nice video. I have lived in Middle Tennessee since the mid 80's and have seen much change over the years, typically in waves. The percentage of people from another place continues to grow, initially from the Midwest and now from the West Coast. Welcome to the state and I hope that your family thrives here. You nailed the key to success in a move like this - adapt to the location instead of trying to change it. I agree with things like the propensity of having chain restaurants rather than locals. They do exist but you may have to look a little harder for them. My son attended UT and has taken us to several great little places that he and his buddies have found. There is a lot to enjoy here that is different, not better or worse. Again, welcome to your family and I look forward to hearing more about your adventure here.

Got SCAMMED by the new property manager into moving out from the place we lived over 25 years. Finally made a big decision to get the heck out of CA last year and moved to upper NY. The BEST decision ever I made, I bought a house in great neighborhood, (they don't play loud music till 3 am or honk their cars at 2 am, nor do I have to worry about homeless to drug addicts hanging around by my home and my Amazon orders are safe) The high school activities are lively but it ends right on time at 10:30 pm the latest. Oregon was so beautiful when I first moved here but it has changed and not for the good. The political climate is really uncomfortable for me. I voted for a certain person and most of my clients left my business. The homeless are all around and no one is doing anything about it. The clean freeways are no longer and I am seeing a lot of graffiti. My house was broken into...same with my car and I live in a high-end neighborhood. I'm 70 years old and I don't know where to live...I would like a new adventure. I so wish California was like how I grew up in the 50's -80's...sad story for Cali! Do you like Idaho?? I have been there but it isn't very green and sorta dry looking...what do you like about Idaho??
@nicklibby37842 ай бұрын
@@t.b.1596 northern idaho in the panhandle is not dry. The cascade mountain rainshadow starts to end around there near Spokane. And since the rockys start there, the trap a lot of the rain. Its probably the rainiest place east of the cascades/Sierra nevadas, and west of the Mississippi. Though norlt quite as rainy as west oregon/Washington. And as a Pacific Northwester you what i mean by "rainy". I mean number of rainy days rather than number of inches per year, since Seattle & Portland are actually about of average in number of inches yearly compared to the rest of the USA. North Idaho will be heavier rain but less rainy days though. You can live in north idaho and go work in Spokane, Washington since it's only about at 15-35 min drive. Lots of people are doing this now since Washington has 0 income tax and Idaho has low property tax. So you live in Idaho but work in Spokane Washington. One big trade off though going east, you will have to say goodbye to the mild winters of 45-55 degrees Portland, Seattle/west Washington/Oregon. In north idaho it will actually go below freezing in winter. So some plants will not be able to grow, like the coast douglas firs and some mosses and palm trees (though most feel like the palm trees look out of place in Seattle & Portland anyway). The western sword ferns do grow around north idaho though. Its just warm enough for them. North idaho is probably the only place with western sword ferns east of the cascades/sierra Nevada mountains. North idaho is the closest place (landscape or nature wise) to west oregon/west Washington. Its very green, decently wet, and mountainous.....though quite a bit colder than the coast, but compared to anywhere else further east as far north it's not too bad. I think you would really like north idaho based on what you said. There is a few cities/towns too. Couer dalene(furthest from Spokane, but couer dalene is also the biggest city in north idaho so you could find a job there and not need to work in Spokane). Then there is PostFalls, which is in between cour dalene and State Line (which is a town on the state line). And then the town of State Line and McGuire, which are VERY CLOSE to Spokane Washington. And basically suburbs of Spokane Washington but are in Idaho. This probably the only area that is green like west oregon/west Washington to the east.

Welcome to Tennessee!🧡

Thank you for your kind words. I can't tell you how much I personally appreciate them! And thank you so much for seeing our heart and intent when making the video. Tennessee is a special place, and the people who built it deserve my family's best efforts to assimilate and to contribute positively to the community we are now lucky enough to call home. Please know that most recent arrivals like us really want to embrace the Tennessee way of life. WE REALLY DO; we're just going to need some patience and training.

We moved from Ventura to Knoxville in July 2020. Everything you said is pretty right on, except the home prices. $450K gets you a home that needs work. If you’re able to find a new house for that price, chances are it’s going to be what we call out here, a “Knox box,” a lower quality built home with vinyl siding, smaller yards, homes built close together, etc. Another thing folks should be aware of is the medical care is rated lower out here compared to the national average. We’ve definitely experienced that. What is your experience with that? Have you found any good Mexican restaurants yet? That’s a big topic of conversation from California transplants. 🤣 I enjoyed your video! It’s pretty much our experience, too. We love it here in Knoxville, Tennessee!

So our medical care has been very good to this point, BUT we've only really needed it once and we may have just been lucky. That said the UT medical center treated us very well. Yeah Mexican food. I don't have an answer for you. I do miss those mom and pop little mexican food restaurants some of which deserved a Michelin star!

This is a fantastic video! My wife and I lived in Southern CA all of our lives and made the decision to move to TN 3 years ago and have loved it very much! We initially moved to West Knoxville into an apartment to get some residency and purchased our first ever home in Talbott between Morristown and Jefferson City. And for the record I work at the Buc-ee's in Sevierville where you took your photo! Yay! We were laughing throughout the video agreeing with everything you were saying. For instance, everything closes by 8pm and how people will talk to you. Very true! Another thing we aren't used to is trucks passing us on the "highway", not freeways like in CA. After 3 years I'm glad to say I'm not saying y'all yet. ha ha ha Welcome to TN!

You have to experience Buc-ee's; you can't really describe it to people! Congratulations on the home purchase!!! Thank you for your kind words. We sincerely appreciate them, and thank you so much for seeing our heart and intent when making the video. We tried our best not to be political. ( I know in this day and age it's not entirely possible) Tennessee is a special place, and the people who built it deserve my family's best efforts to assimilate and to contribute positively to the community we are now lucky enough to call home.

I moved my family to Middle TN just over 2 years ago... also from CA. Love the video! I feel like this could have been my story, and my wife and I have had conversations about every nugget you touched on, even the idea of ancestors moving West decades ago, just for us to move back in search of the same. One thing I particularly like is that people are proud to be from TN! When was the last time you saw a person fly the California flag at their home... I'm from Tennessee, and I'm happy to show my neighbors I'm proud of my state!
