I returned to America from Thailand and have been here about 3 weeks. Way too long. Seems like everything that could go wrong did. Im not sure if I ever want to leave thailand again. I didnt even mentions the terrible customer service in America now or the ungodly about of money I spent while I was in the US. Gonna be a while before I return here!

My name is Brian but everyone calls me Greeny. I retired in January of 2020 after working 30 years in Law Enforcement. I wanted to retire young enough to be able to do some of the things I always dreamed about! I knew I wanted to travel extensively and retire somewhere warm and exotic I sampled a ton of places in the Caribbean, Panama, Colombia, Turkey but set my sights on Thailand.

Every time I come to Thailand 🇹🇭 I feel like crap, until I arrive, and then my blood pressure and cholesterol seem to drop almost as I land. I am a diabetic and when I'm in Thailand, I seem not to have an issue with my sugars. The USA is killing us with prices and poisons.

Some diabetics are cured through diet change and lots of medical studies if you want to look into. I lived Phang Khon on a farm for awhile and ate local, no stores or bread or snacks, or living in a western style like Greeny in Thailand, all my medical of blood pressure, etc started returning to normal. I can't say it is Thailand or just diet and atmosphere change? I am happy

I am a LONG term expat here in Thailand and was born ad raised in the USA. While my parents were still alive, I felt I had to make the trip back for visits. I always planned for two weeks. During those two weeks, I had a hard time waiting to go back to Thailand. Since both my parents have now passed away, I have not been back.

I can relate to your excitement to return to Thailand. I am retired in Thailand but had to return for 3 months to see my family, grandkids, and take care of changing banks and other business matters (customer service now days is on a App, website or waiting 45 minutes plus in order to talk to a "real" customer service agent makes it more frustrating). Then grocery & restaurant prices are totally gauging people ( true, there is inflation all over the world but these price increases are not the norm) along with this 20-25% tipping on rating at a restaurant, bar tab … even getting a haircut. I return in October. I can't wait to get to my routine and quiet environment and being able to “tip” to show my appreciation when I choose to. I’ll be glad to be away from pharmaceutical commercials on TV and reports of a gun shooting in my city of 80,000 people in the Midwest.

Left Canada dec 2019 for 1 month to check out Chiang Mai (late wife’s home town, we were going to retire there so I decided to still go see it even if it wouldn’t be with her) fell in love with the town, returned to Canada to start to tie up lose ends, the came back to Thailand mid March 2020 to visit with a girl I met there and stayed with for a month)and due to Covid got ‘stuck’ there for a year (which I was able to use to get my ‘O visa’ while Thailand was encouraging foreigners to apply for real visas instead of relying on ‘special amnesty announcements’) I had to return once in early 2022, for a month to finalize property and auto sale and a few other lose ends, but returned to Thailand, married the lady I befriended and stayed with, we bought a new home, a few dogs, and I have no plans on returning to Canada … Thailand will have to drag my butt to the airport if they want me gone! ;-)

You're extremely lucky to have been able to get to see a Doctor so quickly. In some parts of the u s you have to wait weeks or even months to get in to be seen. And when the day finally arrives, your are treated with disrespect and hostility by the office staff ( but it seems like this attitude is everywhere in the u s )when the doctor finally arrives he's in and out. In Many cases misdiagnosing you, or he/she refuses to treat you ( denying you medical treatment) or gives you the wrong medication or the medication simply doesn't work. After, years of this, I had enough, and concluded the u s health care system is a big money grab, and they don't actually care about you the patient. Leaving me with the idea it has become like a third wold health care system. Plus, you never get any resolution to your complaints or protests. In some case the staff refuses to take a formal complaint and simply says thy will pass the information on. You will never hear anything back. Sorry, you're having this issue. It sounds like you are experiencing on a very small scale what I went through. My advice leave u s and return to Thailand where you'll enjoy world class heath care and the staff treats you like gold. ------Living in Thailand and loving it.

It's funny how so many people have rosy glasses on when it comes to Thailand. It's one thing to visit, and it's quite another thing to live there. I've lived in Thailand for several months as my bro and my niece live there, and I got to tell you I am happy to be back in Fla, U.S.. Understand one thing: You are no Thai, you will never integrate as one, even if you speak Thai. As a Farang (Foreigner), you have zero rights as you are a "Guest". Anytime you want to buy or sell anything ( I mean cars and maybe condo), you have to ask Immigration to give you a "residence certificate" permit to transact, one per designated transaction - they want you to keep coming back to Immigration office and pay them more Baht bribes. Then, Thai immigration can cancel your visa ultra fast, the 90-day office visits to report, and if you are married, they'll come check on you if you're still married. The amount of effing red tape is staggering. Oh, and they got a brand new Thai Tax law that taxes foreigners (and Thai's) up to 35% on any money they (you) bring into the country, effective as of Jan 2024, provided foreigners (or Thai's working outside Thailand) reside longer than 180 days in the country. There's more, much more to Thailand, and it's not rainbows and unicorns. Go there and enjoy a vacation, but if you stay as resident, prepare to deal with gov bullshit and have an escape plan. Kap Khun Krap!

Ways around everything. I have 10 year visa from BOI not exempt from working, I am exempt from this new tax scheme. I don’t do 90 day reporting. Have car and condo. Just need to know the system. There are ways to get things done here if you do the research. Great quality of life as far as I’m concerned. My stress level so much lower. Here. I was in Florida last week was blown away with all the homelessness and beggars I saw.

Thank you Greenie for the video. Always good and interesting to hear what you say. I am French ( born in France) / Australian ( did all my career there, about 40 years) and got both citizenships. Since retiring, I’ve been living in BKK for over a year now and just came back from 3 months in France with my Thai partner. Going back home, wherever it is, invariably gets you to compare life in both places. Interestingly, I have a less clear-cut view of where it would be better to live, with many questions up in the air. Thailand is way cheaper than back in France, although in BKK, things ain’t that cheap. I guess it depends on your lifestyle choices. But, for instance, rent wise, I pay the same , if not more than what I would pay in most French cities ( outside Paris) : 45,000THB. But it’s my choice, we live in an 87m2 , nice condo near Phrom Phong BTS. Admittedly, we wouldn’t be able to find an equivalent in terms of facilities in many cities and in Paris for a similar price. Foodwise, I do love thaï food, but I love the food back in France. I feel the seafood is tastier ( cold water always makes for tastier fish and seafood), the cheese, the bread, the wine, etc. ( as a result, I put on 5kg over the 3 months we were there !). The choice of wine ( we spent 3 weeks touring the Champagne region) and alcohol is far superior to what we can find here in BKK for a third of the price. Same in Australia, Aussie wines, cheese, olive oil, meats, are just the best as well. Would I move back to France or Australia because of this? Don’t think so. Plus, it is true that things have gotten pretty expensive in France, generally, if you are looking for quality produce. Apologies for rambling a bit and bending your ear… So for the time being, what could be more deciding factors ? 1- the weather… curiously weather in Thailand, the constant unrelenting heat is, at times, getting to me. Getting out of the condo is, at times, a chore because of that. And curiously, my Thai partner prefers the weather in France ( admittedly, we were over there for the summer months… but it did rain a fair bit nevertheless). However, the ability to go out, enjoy a walk around the city, in parks, and so on without feeling uncomfortable because of the heat was nice. 2- Cultural and intellectual sustenance. For me, it is definitely lacking here, I feel, in Thailand. It is hard to match the offer in Paris or many other European capitals and some American cities in terms of exhibitions, concerts, operas, conferences, etc. Granted, this is not everyone cup of tea , but for me, it is probably one of the things I miss the most ( together with good oysters and good wine 😅). 3- Last point ( there are a few more, but I’ll stop at this one): the people. Big plus, as we all know in Thailand, as everyone is so nice , friendly, and generally pretty chilled. This has been, mind you, my experience in Australia as well. By comparison, in France…. especially major cities, and especially Paris, a majority of people are stressed and not cool and some rather aggressive. My partner noticed it straight away we we got to Paris. Far less so or not at all in mid-size towns and countryside. Of course, other determining factors are the tax situation and visa requirements. I have a 5 year retirement OX visa, so it’s pretty smooth visa wise for the time being, although frankl, I find the 90-day report a big pain in the butt. Now, the new tax laws in Thailand are a bit of a worry… we’ll see how this pans out but it might be a key factor ( my Aussie super is non-taxable, my French one is). Last factor in deciding where to settle: visa for my Thai partner. If we get married, it would be feasible for her to get a visa ( equivalent of permanent residency) to stay in France. Lots of paperwork, but inexpensive to apply ( providing the current regulations and laws stay the same ( given the current political trend, things might change regarding immigration requirements..). For OZ, possible to get a visa but a real pain in the butt : a ton of paperwork, long wait time ( the average being at the moment 2 years) , and around 9,000 AUD for the application 😢). But, as my partner here teaches of Thai studies , she wouldn’t be able to work in either France or Australia. Or at least, she would have to do something else and leave her career here behind. Plus, there would be a language barrier were we to move to France as she does not speak the language. She could learn though, but given she find English difficult, I am rather pessimistic as to her resilience when it will come to learning French 😅 The bottom line is that when you are a couple, with a partner who has a career, there are other factors that come into the equation. I guess, maybe, the answer is not to cut the bridges with the places you could live in. Let’s see what happens…😢

Enjoyed your description of your trip back to the US. It's unfortunate you went through so much that it made you want to cut the trip short. I have less than three years to retire and often wondered if I want to keep two homes in the US or just live in another country. When my wife and I return from traveling, I am always grateful to have a home in the US and return to my lifestyle in the US. I do enjoy experiencing the change in lifestyle in another country but I often compare the foreign lifestyle with my lifestyle in the US which causes me to miss the US. I hope you are able to settled down where it makes you most happy. Also, I always say a prayer when I'm on a flight and prepare myself to meet my maker.

Greeny, I had a scary flight like that flying into Bali from Guam. I prayed and made some deals with God to survive that flight. As for MI, I doubt your son will ever move out of your duplex. Given the hyperinflation, it's more cost effective for him to live rent-free in your home with his family than to move. I'm sure he hopes to inherit the house anyway, and then he can be the one collecting the rent from the tenant next door.

If the price of your house is right, sell it and make some money while you can. We don't know about the future will bring. I'm just retired this month, and I'm selling everything and moving to Thailand now. America is too expensive, food, place to stay, transportation. It's not enjoyable when I have to pay an arm and a leg for everything. Especially after my retirement with a fixed income. If I have to return to America, I can always buy a house or a land there. But it has to be further away from town in a mountain somewhere.

My experience with poison ivy is totally different. I grew up in the woods and I am super allergic to the stuff. The oil in the leaves reacts to some people's skin. Mine will blister up and the little balls of fluid will develop under my skin. If I scratch them it spreads to everything i touch. Eyes, lips, groin, everything. However! If I use fast orange or any degreaser the bubbles all pop and nothing spreads. I never heard of it getting into the blood, so that sucks!

I had no clue either. I didn’t know how it kept spreading weeks later

Hey Greeny, I am from the Ann Arbor area-Go Blue- I know your a Spartan-all good-how do you fly to Thailand non stop-or do you try to break in up, I am looking at going to Spain for 2 weeks ,then to Thailand -Jet lag is brutel ,I think you called it a mistake cause you came back to headaces and worries-In Thailand your care free-in the States other peoples problems including family become yours- In Thailand your carefree ,safe trip back

Do direct flight to Thailand unfortunately. Stopping for a bit in Europe to break it up and a wise move

I was on a flight like that in Ukraine ..... one of the engines cut out during landing in a heavy storm and the plane went into a nosedive .... he only just pulled up in time to land heavily bouncing off the runway A few people got injured

Got poison ivy bad as a kid. Miserable. Told my P.E. Teacher I couldn't engage in P.E. and handed him Dr.s note. He (P.E. Teacher) said, "drop your pants" because I had it on my legs and groin. Dropped my pants and he saw the saran wrap taped around my legs so the friction from my levi's pants material didn't make me go out of my mind, and he said, "Jesus, why are you even going to school?"

Lived in Michigan as a kid and got exposed to poison ivy several times. Feel your pain Greeny, it’s insanely uncomfortable and does not go away. The weather in MI, it’s variable…. Heading to Novi and Grand Rapids in October (traveling from Chiang Mai), and I plan to bring g a winter jacket and thermal underwear!

Have a safe and happy trip back to Thailand. Looking forward to your decision process on renting Vs selling house. I think, selling house may not equate to "cut the ties" with US. Because several US citizens don't own a home.

I don't think we realize how overly saturated we are with ads for personal injury attorneys and political candidates on top of the ads from big pharmaceutical companies. Leaving the USA and coming back must be eye opening how different life is in se Asia.

I am not in Thailand but in another country. I sold everything it much better don’t have to worry about my house anymore. My only concern is my passport has to be renewed in 2026. So may go back to U s to do that and visit a few friends. I can do it where I am at but it has to go through their postal service.

I mailed mine into the U.S. embassy in Bangkok. 6 weeks later new passport. No problem. Probably quicker turnaround than doing it in the U.S.
