I think it's been said in the comments already, but I think a smart goal career-wise and financially is to not own an Alexa LF but to be at the level to where you can get on jobs that allow you to rent that package. Most DP's or Cam Ops don't own the bigger cameras they are shooting with. Rent and then create some work with that camera that you can use in a reel and go find the clients that will trust you with the budget for that camera. Meanwhile, keep honing your skills on the FX3 the BMPCC and the FX6 or even the Komodo.

Actually a lot of DP’s or videographers do own larger cine cameras like arri or Venice for the specific reason that they often make just as much as they are getting paid for the job to rent the camera they own back to the production they’re working on. An arri isn’t just a huge cost, it’s a way to get paid more by renting it out on the shoots you do.

I loved my FX3 but sold it and bought a used Red DSMC2 and let me tell you there's a lot of convenience on the fx3 like AF IBIS Battery LIFE but I realized that convenience and image quality sometimes don't go hand to hand, I miss the compact lightweight camera but the 16bit raw from the red codec is insane
@Ansonandco2 жыл бұрын
Honestly the cine lens argument is the reason I chose Lumix cameras. Sony is fantastic at autofocus and offers 120 in 4k but if those things are not being used the s1h and s5 offer so much more. My biggest gripe on the fx3 is it’s lack of shutter angle. It blows my mind that you have a camera that you tag with your cine line and don’t give it shutter angle. And they could have even given it shutter angle with that BIG update that came out recently and still didn’t. It’s super confusing to me
@ChrisFranklinJr2 жыл бұрын
PREACH! The Ronin 4D and BMPCC that I have both have shutter angle! I genuinely do love it, but it does baffle me why it is not included with the FX3.

Been grading a lot of Sony footage for a fairly large gig we landed and I have to say, out of everything I've graded...RED, Blackmagic, Canon, Panasonic, Z Cam...I've disliked my results with the Sony footage the most. I'm talking footage that's properly exposed shot on the a7siii, a7iii, a7IV and FX3. The colors just aren't there to push and the highlight rolloff is very unflattering.
@willmannering2 жыл бұрын
Having graded a similar variety of footage, Sony, Red, Arri, Ronin 4D I totally disagree. The main difference between these cameras is what color and luminance nuances they have and how that affects the time it takes to achieve a certain grade. Some cameras have less quirks straight out of camera and others need a bit more work. But in the end any colorist worth their weight can make any modern log footage look like anything. Even the 8 bit out of the Sony a7iii (slog2 itu709 matrix for best results) I've rarely felt that I couldn't achieve the look I want because of limitations associated with color, highlight roll-off and small codecs

To me dealing with A7s3 and FX3 I can confirm the lack of tonality, but the worst part to be is always the strong sharpening and even worse extreme noise reduction. Any shot that isn't overexposed by at least one stop looks mushy.

We have the FX3. The Arri Alexa LF is beautiful when dialed in. The FX3 in the capable hands of a DP really creates similar images. I use Epidemic Sound on my channel, and for me it's absolutely worth the cost. Sound is not a big part of my production but now I have a background music sound track on every video. My earliest videos did not have a music sound track and no one complained. BUT when I added a music track, I got so many positive comments about how it elevated the quality of my videos. There is a lot of free music around but most of it sounds like it's free and way too many other video makers are using those same sound tracks. Epidemic sound provides professional grade music in a wide variety of styles and genres. 👍👍

I've always preferred the sharpness of the A7SIII for fashion work, exclusively. Hence never 'upgraded' to the FX3. I still prefer the S1H + cinema lenses with braw (video assist) for handheld cinematic and corporate.
@FlingerFilms2 жыл бұрын
Are you saying the FX3 is softer than the A7SIII?
@kilikdudley2 жыл бұрын
@@FlingerFilms Yes. I believe they're doing an optical low pass filter similar to the S1H vs the sharper Panasonic S1 without the filter. My FX3 shots have a finished cinematic look, wheras the A7Siii shots are tack sharp which I prefer for fashion work. I can't verify information about a filter, this is just my experience with shooting with both cameras and I suspect is the case and why Netflix approved the S1H and FX3 for their anti-moire filters.

I would love to get your take on Canon's cine camera line. I understand the desire for the type of high end cinema gear that are used on feature films, but for the type of small-crew work you're doing, Canon's cameras seem made for it. Light weight, built-in NDs, lots of codec options, great on-camera audio, built-in EVF, good battery life, autofocus if you want it... Not as sexy as Arri or Red though, I get it!
