This is why I am such an advocate, for at least study abroad, or going to school abroad. The lifestyle that an American has only if he reaches the highest tax bracket is what European countries consider a basic human right: quality food, quality public education, quality public transportation, safe neighborhoods without no-go areas, enough vacation time to actually relax, etc

After watching and reading about Portugal for the last few years, we finally made a trip to Portugal (returned yesterday). We loved it and plan to go back. One thing that I found refreshing is not one person asked me what I do for a living. They asked me where I lived in the US and why I chose Portugal to visit.

This is great! I’ve only been in Portugal a year and a half and I am noticing differences. One thing you did not mention that I have noticed is the amount of stimulation in the US. For example, in the Atlanta airport as an example, I was in a restaurant with 20 big screen tvs each playing different shows while pop music was played loudly throughout the restaurant. In the corridor just beyond the restaurant we’re a mix of Anjou cements from the airline gate agents while a loop played off the mayor welcoming you to the city and telling you about things in the city. Granted, this was an airport example but i contrast it to the European airports which have activity, but not the “extracurricular stimulation”. In almost any “fast casual” restaurant there are at least two things competing for your attention while in Porto I tend to hear conversation with maybe light music in the background unless I’m in a bar. Another thing to appreciate in Europe is the lack of pharmaceutical advertising on tv commercials. Generally the commercials are about other entertainment, groceries, or upcoming events. I’ve come to like this lack of artificial noise and appreciate instead the noise of people, plates and cups clanging, street vendors, etc.

Having lived on the East Coast of the US and now in London for almost 20 years, it's definitely changed me. I walk so much more and feel like such a weirdo when I walk places in the US (except for places like NYC). I grew up in a small town with no sidewalks and walked back then with people looking at me weirdly from cars - still do it when I visit my parents and still get those looks. Agree with so many of your points (public transport, multiculturalism, etc)

Sorry Dave, Americans who haven't traveled aren't going to understand your video. After High School, a lot of my friends traveled Europe for a summer. Meanwhile, I was working and going to school. I felt left out. However, eventually, when I was making good money in my 30's I traveled extensively! Sometimes I'd go to Lisbon, Madrid, Frankfurt, Copenhagen for as little as 4 days, and take 5 trips a year! I get it. After decades of this, I find myself retired and in the process of moving to Europe (Spain) a bit of ahead of schedule. I'm now 60, but it's a great time to make the leap. My family is all over the US and just to visit one of my sisters in the USVI, cost twice as much as to fly from LAX than to Europe! My house is on the market, yikes a few months, but when it sells, I'm out of here. I have worked one year recently in Europe, and I'll move to Spain. Portugal is attractive, but I love Spain and won't have to learn a 3rd language!

As a Canadian first generation born here from Immigrated Mother and Father from Portugal. I have been blessed to have had the best of both worlds. I spent most summers growing up in Portugal and rest of year and schooling in Canada... We moved back to portugal in my early teens and spent 3 years there in high school in Albufieira in the Algarve, My dads home town. I missed Canada, but LOVED the enrichment of learning our language much better. And living as apposed to spending summer vacations traveling and beach going is very different. I am a mother of 3 daughters now many years later and a grandmother. I keep all our traditions as best i can. I love your videos as i can understand both perspectives. As a non natural resident Portugal. Here is the one down side of being part of two vastly different cultures and lifestyles. Somewhat never felt fully accepted as a Canadian in Canada or a Portuguese enough in Portugal. Ironically enough... But, so thankful to have both. Would not trade it for the world. PS. i traveled thought out most of Europe. The beauty and diversity is an experience out of this world. However, and I MAY BE BIAS, Portugal has the most generous people i have ever experienced. The one lesson i learned in Portugal. is the ones that have the least give the most. And most of them would not bat a lash for anyone who may have needed a lending hand... Just a fact!

That's similar to my childhood going from Portugal to Canada and back but while I was fairly young. I did spend parts of my summers there, but then would come back and spend all my time kind of locked up at home. I feel that I definitely missed out on everything living here. I also never really adapted to either country, especially when assimilating to my new home was so looked down on. It's a different experience for everyone 🤷‍♂️

I had one art book as a kid, a history of art. Got to know many of the paintersand their subjects so when I went to the National Gallery in London it was absolutely magic to walk around and see so many works of art was like going to a party and finding all the people there people you already know. We have been planning on retiring in Portugal from the US for 3 years now. We've even been learning the language. We can't leave the US for another 7 years due to my husband's job. Now, the NHR is ending, and we are anxiously awaiting the details like tax rates on US pensions and other income. I was so taken up Portuguese cooking with p da n in particular that I bought a cookbook😱 I'm sorry to say that the egg component and cream and sugar was a calorie too far! Apparently the best paste is are to be found early morning opposite the Monument to the Navigators in Lisbon at the side of the Tagus. Hope this gives you some incentive to get back to Portugal😁

Exactly. And, let's face it, things we buy take up space, need to be stored and cleaned, and you have to move them around. And then, we don't uo using a lot of stuff much at all. It just takes up space and time. If you take pictures/video, an experience like a different city or country will stay with you, and it won't hang around and take up space! Several years ago, my daughter she asked for help with expreienes rather than stuff at Christmas. It made me think differently about stuff vs. experiences.

Born American here. Have a dual Citizenship. I came to Portugal when I was 8 yo, 2 years after The Carnation Revolution (1977) and boy, has Portugal changed! Changed for better, in all aspects. Great perspective, Dave., and another great video. I agree with you completely. I've only been to eight European countries. but I've been to five of them many times. Great times. I can walk London, Paris, Rome, Florence, Bruges and Amsterdam in my mind, I'm so familiar with them. The museums, cathedrals and churches (with art and tombs), government buildings, monuments, parks, etc., I'll never lose that ability to revisit in my mind or the feelings I get when I do.OR all those great meals and cuisines. My first step is to see if we can even afford to live in Portugal without the NHR benefit. I also have to learn the language. In an effort to provide the best future possible for us children, my parents, God love them, wanted to distance us from the old country. I am forever grateful for my grandparents and parents wanting a better future for their children! Unfortunately, our proud cultural traditions were stripped away in the process.

We both lived in Portugal for 2 years, my wife for 6 and I have colleges for 33 years! It has been fun to explore and learn from this culture. The Portuguese people that I know have an Idea and what the United States is... but it is though media. I think that they could also learn from us too. I did share about driving to go places in the USA and were shocked that driving 30 min or more is way to long!! In my opinion I think every person should go and explore different places and learn.. I have heard an analogy that USA is a circle and lets say Portugal is a square, after moving to Portugal you become a hexagon and are never the same, and if you go to more places like Thailand (like I have) then you become a triangle. ⁠people say am crazy for living 60 miles away from the office, on a mostly remote job, going there once a week by train that takes one hour, my mom used to walk to work and complained when we moved to a house that was a 5 minutes car drive, my dad never was more than 15 minutes away from work. I live a 5 minute walk from my parents and 10 from my in laws. A 30 minute commute is a long one for us, also have in mind we pay like 10$ per gallon in a 6$ per hour average net wage, long commutes like 60 miles per day would be 20% of income just for fuel. If you go to azores islands a 10 minute commute is a very long one 😂

To be honest, i have visited USA a few times, that expericence and also thanks to the videos i have seen here from people living in US, has given me motivation to appreciate more where i live, what i have. Ofcourse like everywhere there are advantages and disadvantages, maby more disadvantages here in SE Europe, but there are so many things that i don't like about US if i had to choose where to live. They don't have much free time, paid hollidays leave, paid sick leave, paid leave for mothers, gun issues, not very much being welcoming and willing to help others, issues with unhelty food, but not just because it is junk food, it is because healthy food can give you alergies, i have heared so many people having issues with allergies in US, they don't have it when in Europe.

Ive never traveled extensively in the US. But I’ve been maybe to 15 states and though they’re different the underlying mentalities are similar. People become so cookie cutter with all the chain restaurants and stores adding to that. Obesity is astronomical in the US! Though I live on the east coast not in rural US I’ve been places where it seems all the people must eat for fun 24/7! Outside of that I’ve been to the EU and couldn’t agree more about the vast differences mostly for the better.. the US is so stuck. I plan to move within 1 year to Porto Portugal area for a better way of life.

In the United States, people are expected to have a good level of general culture after college. In Europe, after high school. This is paralleled in language. In the US you get a Bachelor's degree from "college", which is university. In multiple European countries, the degree you get from secondary school is called bachiller, baccalaurate, etc. and the school you get it from may be a colegio.

I need to point out that there are a lot of places in the states that have excellent public transportation and it is used by many people. For example, there was three years in Oregon that I spent without even owning a car. And the whole time I worked in Denver I commuted on the train. My point is, the ability was there, just most Americans cant stand to be without their cars!!!

In the U.S., public transportation is better in more compact locations (SF Bay Area, NY, D.C.). In Los Angeles, for example, everything is spread out over long distances, such that often public transportation travel times are too long to be sustainable.

If you ever actually travelled through Europe by high speed train and the used the rain lines that connect cities and even villages, you would understand that there isn’t even a comparison to public transport in Europe to United States.

Prepping to leave the US again as well. Lived abroad for more than a decade once before and I regret having moved back to the US. For clarity I recommend most Americans leave the US for more than a month at a time if they can. Reset your mind and how you feel.

Love your video. I agree with the fact we need much more love in the world and that we have more similarities than not. I have lately notice a gradual decline in brotherly love the last 20 yrs and a great insurgence of the me first attitude since the rise of the internet and in particular social media. Europe has a more social based lifestyle, as opposed to isolation in front of a computer screen.

Definitely a pro-Europe lean, maybe because his American experience is Californian. Some of his points are true; others can be attributed to his eyes being opened while in Europe and he just was not cognisant of those things in America. The US (and Canada) is a wonderful place to live. It has it's challenges, but has huge advantages that Europeans envied enough to TRY to emulate (and failed largely) and Asians have the same wish currently. Every culture has good and bad depending more on the beliefs and actions of their politicians than anything else. Choices have to be made, leading to the good and the bad in certain people's eyes.

Lovely video and modestly told. We have lived in the USA since 2009 and only want to stay for two years. Now it's been 13 years, and we come from Germany. I am pleased to have taken this step; it has changed me. I'm glad to see two sides, especially regarding the healthcare system. In Germany, many things are more modern. The food is better and healthier, and you can visit any doctor. You have at least 21 vacation days, and the garbage separation system is better. I can confirm that. It's unbelievable how much Americans go into debt to attend college. In Germany, it is free. . I can only confirm a lot of what you say. As a teenager, it was always a dream for me to fly to the USA. However, I didn't expect to live here. I've experienced many things in the US and am pleased about it. Next year I will fly back again and take a trip to Paris. We have been there so many times, and I miss this city. And I'll even visit Portugal someday. There are many things that I miss and don't like here in the USA. And your video makes me miss Europe. But we don't grow old in the USA. That's for sure.

I immigrated from Texas to my ancestral. homelands in Europe in my 50s, and my life is so much better here. I had many good experiences in the US, and things are not perfect in the EU. Overall, though, my life is so much better. I relate to so much of what is in the video. For those who are so inclined and who live in the USA, consider trying life in the EU. You will probably not regret it.

When I visited Lisbon last year, I went to the National Museum of Ancient Art. Fantastic! I highly recommend it. There were a few others that I didn't get a chance to visit but they looked very good.

Considering what State You came from, that makes sense. Very Tunnel-Vision. I am from the Mitten, but moved to a cosmopolitan City (EDIT: As you did - once I saw the Vid) for decades before I spent time in the EU. For Me, it was not much of a difference in some ways because we Cared about people in SF CA> But, Europe is amazing, cultures so close to each other. Handled well.

7:48 here in portugal by law it is forbidden that a boss contacts it's workers, unless that the company is on the verge of bankruptcy. And even if that's the case, the boss must pay the expenses to coming back (for instance airplane tickets) for the worker and obviously pay those hours (but I think it's only if It's only if the worker had been on vacation for more than four days🤔) Yes, here we have some bosses that may talk to you outside working hours anout work, but as it is forbidden you can stop working there with fair cause (justa causa: when somebody does to you something and you decide to reply to it in a specific and the reason you did that is in the law) and get out of that toxic environment (hopefully)😊
