I am living on the Açores Islands of Portugal as a retired German. Everything you said seems to be the same like I experienced. For me as a German it's easier to adapt. If you are willing to learn the basics of the language you will feel so welcome! After a while you surely find out WHO, WHERE, WHEN and HOW. Just make connections! Communication and community is everything!!!😊❤ To live on a small island where you depend on delivering goods by shipping is sometimes more difficult. To say it absolutly clear : you don't get everything you want or need at every time! If you are able to adapt and be like the Hawaiian's say : "If things are not going the way you thought, change your mind/thought!" Or : the Alaskan way : make new things out of old stuff. I personally love that😂❤

This is not directed at you of course Dave. More of a general statement. Americans tend to go after foreigners when they come here stating they should learn the language. Well the same applies for the Americans that go to Portugal or whatever other country. If you're going to move to Portugal expecting the life you had in San Diego for example, just stay in San Diego. I am of your school of thought. I have no problem paying the taxes because it gets me a better infrastructure, a better health care system, better foods, and a better climate. And I just don't mean the weather. I mean the safety, the community, the camaraderie. Those things are exactly the reasons I am relocating to Portugal. I will learn the language. I will learn the culture. I will learn to be more patient than I already am when it comes to dealing with bureaucracy. I'm on medication to maintain the strength of my immune system after battling cancer. Without insurance that one month supply of 30 pills would be just over $4,000 per month. Even with my insurance I still pay nearly a third of that. In Portugal, the same pill from the same company is less than 150 Euros per month.

@ You are partially right, you and I both know that portuguese people are very proud of their language, and the average portuguese citizen does not speak English fluently, making it harder for English only speakers to integrate, one thing to note is that most of the English speakers do live in the big cities, not coincidentally where pretty much all turism is concentrated!

I'm in Portugal twice a year from Dublin. As for individuality v community, the US used to be a place where the two sat perfectly beside each other. 30 years of degenerate politics have put an end to that. As with everywhere else in the world, everyone wants to get along as an individual and have family/community values. I just hope Newsom's Californication of Portugal doesn't happen.

Excellent episode Dave. I agree re: family is forgotten in America which is one of the reasons for its failure. Can you do an episode on the culture of family and more concern for others over self? That’s for me one if the greatest failures of America. Lots of power and money-which in truth makes many of those who achieve that hollowed out and often unfriendly towards others-which self-perpetuates itself. Terrible way to live but the present sad reality here at the moment .

That is everywhere unfortunately. I grew up in New Jersey. The Garden State Parkway is a toll road. When it was built, the tolls were "in place until the roadway is paid for." 50+ years later the tolls are still in place. I am in Texas for the time being. Every new roadway or new stretch of existing roadways are now toll roads. From where I live to a close friend's house is 55-60 minutes each way via the toll roads at a cost of $10 - $12 each way. 1hr40 minutes if I avoid the toll roads. And some of the tollways are owned by private companies outside the US. Yet there is collusion between the private companies and the state government. A $2.00 unpaid toll can become hundreds of dollars with fees and penalties without regulation of those fees. They can also prevent you from renewing your vehicle registration if your tolls/fines go unpaid.

1) On the topic of construction work - don't pay in advance (just in case). 2) The State workers don't get a pass either. They often don't give a crap and many can't get fired or suffer any consequences for any mess they have done. As for the rest of it, you just can't compare it, really. There are good and bad aspects on both countries, I suppose. Average income is much greater in the USA. Most people in Portugal can't afford the "low" price of private insurance and therefore they pay (almost) zero in the public sector, including the amazing waiting lists. At least, we can get free ambulance service if we really need it and you don't go bankrupt if you end in ER and/or have to be hospitalized. Off course, all is payed with our taxes, including those wonderful roads that, for some reason, we still have to pay high tolls to some big company that has the concession (decades after they have been constructed, btw). Enjoy Portugal, the self-managed madhouse. Could be much worse, really. Note: I like this Dave guy. He tries to give a more objective take on reality and seems to have a much more positive view of the world than I am able to.

I like your honesty, where you talk not only about what is better, but also about what is worse. Even if Portugal is more corrupt than, say, Denmark, I can still see the European emphasis on using the government's dollars to benefit all the people. In Europe, they subsidize agriculture to make food cheaper and better for everyone. Here in the states, the biggest food corporations are probably figuring how to scam the government and get the lion's share of subsidies, while at the same time ripping off the consumer with ridiculously high prices. It almost seems like it's designed that way -- to make the rich even richer.

Hi I love your perspective about my country and the last thing you talked about was family and community and I think the differences you mentioned happens because we still do pretty much every day a meal with the family, and on weekends the extended family ( brothers, sisters, parents…) . So we always have time to seat around a table when in America I don’t see that happening most of the times with the busy schedules that most people have …

I grew up in the US and now live in Malta, my mother's country. It's much like what you describe for Portugal. And I hear the same is true for most or all Southern Europe. For me, it's heaven on earth. I never liked the rat race, or the shooting, or the expectation to do forced and fake smiles all the time. And having to go without healthcare when I needed it is not my idea of civilized country. But I know people who aren't previously aculturated might have a hard time here.

@@lexoclepto I can't comment on Spain because I don't know the reality there. But I do know about Portugal and children. Children are safe and grow up with plenty of family and friends around as we love to get together around a table that can start at Sunday lunch and you are still laughing, eating and drinking by the evening meal. People are very welcoming and eager to help when support is needed. People are very close and that atmosphere helps a lot to integrate in a new country, specially for children. The quality of life is great if you have the money to spend. Half the country is atlantic ocean and Mediterranean sea that offers you an enormous amount of wonderful beaches and great aquatic sports too. The food is marvellous and we have very good wine too. FYI the US does require its citizens to file federal taxes annually regardless of where you live in the world however they have reciprocal agreements with several EU countries, including Portugal, whereby you are not double taxed. So all worldwide income is taxable for US Citizens but due to the reciprocal agreement most expats living in Portugal aren’t double taxed (they just pay tax to Portugal). But I do believe there are income ceilings so if you earn beyond the ceiling then you may still have to pay US taxes for any income over that threshold. I’m not a tax expert however so please do seek professional advice from both US and Portuguese tax advisors.

I'm a fan of Dave's videos but I have a different opinion on some points: - The Food: Food is 44% more expensive in the United States than in Portugal. Is that an issue when Americans earn 300% more than the Portuguese on average? (average annual income in USA: 70,900 US$, average annual income in Portugal: 23,880 US$). Processed food is even cheaper in the US. Electronics are cheaper, American cars are cheaper, etc. - Safety: I agree that overall Portugal is a safe country (it used to be safer than it is now) but Portugal is more of a meek country than a safe country. There's a lot of crime in Portugal that is not considered in the statistics. There is also a lot of corruption. - Health Insurance: Health is not cheap in Portugal, on the contrary. A small part of the population (mainly the middle class which is disappearing in Portugal) has to pay for it every month with their taxes. That's why a gross salary of 3687.22€ corresponds to a net salary of only 2187.22€. On top of that we have VAT of 23% (vs 13.5% in the US) and other taxes such as the Municipal Property Tax and the Vehicle Circulation Tax. There's a huge parallel economy (black market) in Portugal but most people who work and pay taxes have Health Insurance provided by the companies. I work remotely for an American company and they pay Health Insurance for both Portuguese and American employees. Despite this, I am forced to pay into the National Health Service, which I hardly use and is very expensive.

In comparison, though, in the US we all pay taxes that goes to deep discounts for the "poor" getting subsidies to pay for health insurance plans, that most of us don't qualify to get. Unfortunately, I know more people that now choose to not get married to look like their kids and themselves don't have income and are "poor". The more taxes we pay, the less we get. good video and channel and,I believe, good guy thanks. what I think is that's not possible to define a country and its people as a whole, too many diferences in many things. In case, Portugal, has many diferent geography, weather, accents, cultural heritage, cities and city to country, way of life, well... and we use to consider a little country (not so little in EU, I think) but we're only around 10 M. Now, comparing to US...? so many big cities over there, so many states (and also so diferent from east to west, north to south) larger than Portugal, in many ways "the greatest one". My conclusion: there are places I'd like to live in America, in Europe, in any other place of the Universe and I'll meet good (and bad) people/life everywhere. 😊
