🌎 MY TRAVEL/FOOD BLOG: davidsbeenhere.com/
My adventures in Lebanon continued in the national capital, Beirut, where I went on an epic tour of the Little Armenia neighborhood. Join me and my guide Armando as we explore this unique area of the city!
Little Armenia is home to Beirut’s sizeable Armenian community. Armando is half-Armenian and half-Brazilian, so he was the perfect person to show me around!
👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH: teespring.com/stores/davids-b...
Lebanon was a French colony until 1945, so a lot of the people speak French. We started off with some Lebanese coffee for less than $1 USD before stopping by a kebab shop. The guy inside was making a salad, and they had some spices there as well.
We also passed lots of jewelry shops on our way to get some sujuk shawarma. They sold gold necklaces, bracelets, rings, and more.
At Basterma Bedo, we saw the cooks slicing chicken and lamb shawarma off the the giant stacked meat. But we were headed to Basterma Mano, a more famous shop!
It’s said that they have the best shawarma in the city. They have beef, chicken, and lamb shawarma, and they only cost $2.50 USD!
First, the add pickle and tomato, and then they add the sujuk shawarma, and add either garlic sauce or mayo before toasting it in the panini press. The guy even cut some meat off for me. It was really juicy but only mid-level spicy!
The sandwich was crispy with a nice burst of juiciness from the tomatoes. I loved the spicy beef sausage. It was so filling and tasty and took me straight back to my time in Armenia! It was even better when the cook come and added some creamy garlic sauce!
Then, we saw them make some roast beef sandwiches with lettuce, pickle, tomatoes, and more. I got to see them smoking the sujuk and basturma.
From there, we headed through the main square in the area, where we found an open-air cafe where they offer shisha and juices. Shisha is traditional in the Middle East. We also got some freshly pressed carrot juice. Both cost us less than $6 USD.
Then, at Basterma Bedo, we watched them make basturma sandwiches out of the peppery beef and vegetables on a baguette. The beef was really peppery!
The dried, aged, peppery beef was unbelievable. I loved the toasted baguette, pickle, and tomato as well. It was really nice and full of flavor!

@@gidemnas Thank you, very informative reply backed with facts. Interesting you mentioned Assyrian, I’m Chaldean and Assyrian’s are our sisters and brothers, we both speak Aramaic, same alphabet, text, etc sadly facing extinction, only difference is church politics, Chaldeans are catholic and assyrians are orthodox. I’ve been to Beirut in 1974 and I was a child en route to the US as we didn’t have an American embassy in Iraq. We stayed at the Al-Hamra street nice hotel for 16 days till our papers were complete. Are you Armenian by ethnicity and Lebanese for a nationality ? Do you know Arabic ? Greetings from San Diego, California. It’s a beautiful town located about 2.5 hr drive south of Hollywood where they make all the movies. Peace out✌️ dr Mazin ‏مازن

Pastırma (Albanian pastërma; بسطرمة arabic, DMG basṭirma or باسطرمة, DMG bāsṭirma; Armenian բաստուրմա basturma; aserbaidschanisch bastırma; Bulgarian пастърма Pastarma; Georgian ბასტურმა basturma; Greek παστουρμάς pastourmás or παστρουμάς pastroumás; Bosnia / Croatian / Serb and macedonian pastrma or пастрма; Romanian pastrámă; Russian бастурма basturma) is a meat specialty that is particularly common in the countries that used to belong to the Ottoman Empire or were influenced by it, and in Transcaucasia. It is usually heavily seasoned beef jerky that is served as a cold appetizer. Camel meat was also common in the past. Turkish Pastırma Industrially made pastırma made from joined pieces of meat with a çemen crust The food is probably an inheritance of the nomadic Turkic people. Today's name comes from the Turkish language. Originally it was called bastırma et, meaning "pressed meat".[1] According to legend, Turk riders used the fillet slices as a strengthening and energy-rich food for the journey. They were placed under the saddlebags and ridden dry.

Onions and garlic are an essential part of food ingredients in the Levant kitchen With Shawarma (meat, not chicken) Add the uncooked onion slices sprinkled with lemon juice with chopped parsley , Chicken Shawarma Garlic cream is added with pickled turnip And by the way, the "Arabic" shawarma is different in taste from the Turkish "doner".

Basturma is Latin word with Indo-European origin PASTOS is FOOD or PASTURE. The Latin word was used in East Roman Empire - Byzantium as official language but Greek was lingua franca and Pastorami, Pasturma or East Armenian pronunciation Basturma came after. The meat preservation was very popular in Ancient times so Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians were doing Basturma much longer before Roman's concurred Minor Asia or turks appeared in the sight horizon 600 years ago. BTW The turkish verb basturmek is derived from original Latin and after adopted to Armenian Basturma. Like brick and bricking or press and pressing or Google and googling.
