That "clothesline" against Rambis was nothing back then. The problem for the Lakers that year was they were used to the Western conference which was much less physical than the Eastern Conference and that gave the Celtics an advantage. The next time the Lakers and Celtics met, the Celtics were riddled with injuries because every team in the very physical Eastern Conference went after the Celtics. Watch some Detroit/Celtics games from back then and see how Lambier would try to cause injuries to Celtics players. He was infamous for trying to create ankle injuries and see how he grabbed Bird by the neck and yanked him down to the floor. Lambier was so violent he should have been kicked out of the NBA. Lambier tried his ankle injury trick on Bird, Bird was so mad, he did the same thing to Lambier and Lambier never tried it with Bird again.

It's what's missing in pretty much all sports now. The one exception I can think of is college football.

The image of Magic at Larry Bird's mama's house eating lunch at the table is so wholesome ❤️ Larry's mama making food for the guest because thats what you do, and Larry's family starstruck because Magic Johnson from the television is in their house. Beautiful .

The sad thing about all that was that boston was as good as unbeatable in the garden in 87 (similar to 86). If that shot had gone in, along wit a 2-2 score and the momentum of a recent win, I have very little doubt that boston would have taken a 3-2 lead back at home regardless of the many injuries. (McHale was playing on a broken foot & Perish had his ankle twisted against the Pistons etc.) Like Larry said: That one shot changed the series... Likely would have changed history if it had gone in.

21:50 Isiah later walked that back saying he was just joking. Im one of few people who actually believe that he didnt actually mean it. I dont think he was joking tho. I think that as a senior team mate and a leading figure of his team he realized what a colossal fakk up Rodman just done and said what he did to take the heat off of him. Rodman confirmed in an interview, years later, that he didnt realize how badly he screwed up until way later. He was new to the league and "street hoop mentality was still in his mind". As far as I remember Isiah was the one who clued him in.

I’m still convinced the change from 2-2-1-1-1 to a 2-3-2 format cost the Celtics in ‘85. Game 5 would normally have been in Boston but instead they were in LA for games 3-5. Winner of game 5 when it’s 3-2 goes on to win series 80% of the time. Then in ‘87 McHale broke his foot in playoffs and then you throw in Len Bias dying right after the draft….man ‘86-‘87 Celtics with healthy McHale AND Len Bias? Sigh…what could’ve been.

ARSINIO’S STATEMENT IS WHAT THEY DO TODAY WITH LEBRON! LEBRON COULD NOT BE PLAYING, BUT THE SPORTS ANNOUNCERS ARE TALKING UP LEBRON, WHO IS NOT PLAYING THE GAME.

The Eastern Conference was much more competitive! The Lakers had it way easier in the western conference to make it to the playoffs! So of course the Celtics were a tougher team... they were used to tougher competition!

@25:16 they were down by one, bird hit 3, and they didn’t show Kareem made 1FT and missed 2nd and somehow ball was called out in Boston.

Man I really hate the “he can’t run he can’t jump narrative”. It really downplays Bird. It’s the whole Wes Welker scrappy gym rat crap that is actually trying to claim that this white guy is great because he works hard and this black player just has natural talent. That’s crap. They’ve all got talent, and they all work hard. No way you can get to that level without hard work. The greats separate themselves even further with harder work. Bird vertical is same as Karl Malone. He’s not Jordan athletic but neither is Magic.

That was indeed Basketball. One might argue that the babyproof bs they play today "is not basketball". There is no sport without risk. Hockey, Football, Pole Vaulting whatever... One wrong tackle/landing can end a career, thats a risk you take. Trying to eliminate all danger from the game only makes the game slower, less intense and, quite frankly, boring. I havnt followed Basketball since the late 90s. The soft, lame nature of the league today is the exact reason why. Not saying it wasnt insanely rough back then, but they overcorrected so hard its not even entertaining anymore. You get a foul for looking to hard at someone, an "athlete" who cant take some heat is no athlete, hes a puxxy. A happy medium would probably be the best but if I had to pick between the 80s and today, thats not even a question worth dignifying with an answer. These guys get payed millions, even back then. A guy washing windows on skyscrapers takes a bigger risk for less money and if he gets hurt and his career is over (assuming he survive at all), hes in trouble... These guys would still have more money than they would ever need. Complaining that you might get hurt when making that kind of money is a real cry-baby, weakling attitude.

Kareem was fouled. Hit the first one and then the rebound was knocked out of bounds by the Celtics.

I get Arsenio's point but he came off as a bit of an asshole. to my knowledge he never said anything good about Larry, but like Larry said he just didn't care what people said. he never addressed what Arsenio said about him. It was just noise he didn't want to hear.

Isaiah Thomas is a perfect example of a racist. Because Larry bird was not black, he couldn’t give him the credit he deserved. Which makes him look like an idiot, considering every single NBA superstar from the goat of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson,, and every single NBA great has called bird one of the greatest of all time.
