Magic is the greatest point guard of all time by FAR!! Amazing passing ability obviously but what people miss is that at 6'9 with the handles he had AND the passing ability AND his ability to finish at the rim he was an indefensible freight train coming at you on the break. Scary.

Best passer, best leader, best point guard… I would change “point guard” and say that he was the first QUARTERBACK in basketball history!!! I grew up in SoCal, first Lakers game at The Forum I went to was in the 86-87 season… When he retired early, it was a huge blow… There’s never been a basketball fan experience since! I feel so fortunate that I was around at that time to have my team like them as a kid… Let alone the epic rivalries… Nothing like that since!

Magic to me was the best leader in all sports. He could play all 5 positions and he knew his personnel more than any other player. If u were his teammate he knew what your weaknesses were and how to get u going. He could score lots of points if needed whatever u need Magic got it. He’s always my answer too for picking one player to start a team around.

Magic is the reason I fell in love with the sport in 1979. Being from Southern Cali (Orange County) how can you not be a Lakers fan? I was very fortunate to have watched him in person many times. The things he did with a basketball were amazing. He ran the fast-break like no one else. You knew you were about to see something spectacular. The guy was 6'9 but soon as you put a ball in his hands he handled it like he was a 6'1 guard. His vision was that of Lee Majors (bionic). We'll never see another point-guard like him. Without hesitation I proclaim Jordan as the GOAT but Magic is my favorite player all-time and it's not even close. I'm as macho as Pancho Villa in botas de charro but I cried for days when he got HIV. What a special player - on and off the court. That smile and charisma is unmatchable.

Omg! I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and still here lol! I have 4 older brothers who played basketball and all I can remember doing as a young girl was going to their practices and games. I hated basketball!!!! My mother was attending night school leaving my crazy dad to babysit and whenever there was a Laker home game my dad would pile us in car and drive to the scary ass Forum. I saw so many Laker games and hated every one of them until one night there was a new player. I had never seen anything like him before. Every time the game was so exciting! Making plays never seen before. I fell in love with basketball because of Magic. I feel exactly the same way. I know Jordan is GOAT but Magic will always be all time fav. Not only did I cry when Magic announced his retirement, but I didn't get out of bed for 3 weeks. I hate Isiah Thomas too lol! Dont care for LeBron either. I still cry for Kobe even today. Magic is definitely top 5 for me, possibly top 2 (R.I.P. Bill Russell). Also Kareem, Jordan, Lebron. Not only was he a magic passer/assists, but when he played he was the commanding general on the whole court. The game revolved around him. You had to guard him because he could score at any time but he was just as happy to assist. He kept teams off balance. I remember watching the Lakers in the 80's and loving the fast break. L.A. gets the rebound, give it to Magic and 3 or 4 Lakers just sprint to their basket and Magic will find one who is open. Opponents were constantly off balance. Magic won MVP in the finals in his rookie year. 12 full seasons played and he lead his team to the finals 9 times! Not just to the playoffs, we're talking the finals. And he won 5 times! His all-time game winning percentage (over 900 games played) is .740 He is much more than just a great passer.

Great team defender as well. Sure he couldn't guard the small quick PGs, Scott and Coopers job, but he could post them up and force the opposing teams SF on him. Bulls don't win their first title without Pippin on Magic. Lakers would have challenged them in 92 with the addition of Threatt, but Magic got HIV and was taken from us.

THE RE EDIT VERSION.. im a pg myself and a pass first one at that so i understand loving passing.. Im a running back in football though lol.. another thing about the 80s.. the two best teams were the Lakers and Celtics (76ers, pistons and Rockets were good too among others) and the things that those two teams brought was SHARING the ball and FAST BREAKS. every other team tried to emulate that.. the 90s brought that iso ball (i love the 90s but cuz of the intensity and physicality but the 80s had that too PLUS the free flowing offense, that's why they say the 80s is the golden era of Basketball, the best it was every played)

The reason that Magic and Bird saved the NBA was an after thought in pro sports in the US. Before they came along the NBA Finals were rarely televised live. Most games were tape delayed. Magic and Showtime was made for tv. Plus the Lakers and Celtics were the leagues oldest rivalries. It was must see in the 80s. The average salary in their rookie year was $173k per year. By 1990, the average salary was over $1 million per year. I have been watching basketball since 1980ish. The goat conversation is up for debate but best PG isn't. In the 40 ish years I have played, coached and watched basketball I have never seen a better PG or passer than Magic.
@paladin3132 жыл бұрын
Saving the NBA... Let me give you a bit of backstory. Thanks to the Celitcs Dynasty, the NBA was very popular. There were only anywhere between 9 to 14 teams, though. Yet, when that waned in the 1970s, and during the ABA experiment, despite there being more professional basketball, the NBA started to lose viewership. In fact, the NBA finals were often pre-recorded and shown at later times on TV. By that point, the league was bigger through expansion and the absorption of some ABA teams, but they didn't have the star power all that much at the time. Sure, you had Pistol Pete, the Doctor, Jerry West, Wilt, and Kareem, but for whatever reason, they weren't "packing them in" despite how legendary they were. When BirdvMagic came along, everything changed. Because of their college rivalry, and knowing they were both future NBA stars, the public were now entranced to see how that would develop in the pros. They did not disappoint! The NBA became prime time, and when MJ joined the fray at the end of that, well, Katie bar the door!
@jimmyboy1312 жыл бұрын
There hasn't been a player like Magic or even as good all around as Magic since he left the league, in my opinion. People compare Lebron to Magic and that's a fair comparison but in my opinion even Lebron isn't QUITE all around as good as Magic. Don't get me wrong; Lebron is a super talented beast. But consider that Magic was a point guard, still has the highest assists per game at over 11, and averaged 20 points per game. He also had the most triple doubles every season he played and is #3 all time. But Magic only played for 12 full seasons. In those 12 seasons he went to the Finals 9 times, winning 5. He has the highest career win percentage of all time, ahead of Larry Bird by 10 games. Early in his career, in the span of four years he won the state high school championship, the NCAA championship, then the NBA championship, becoming Finals MVP his rookie year. Yeah Magic is arguably the greatest all around player ever. And that includes being the greatest passer of all time.

Magic is not one of the best passers ever. He’s THE greatest passer ever. No playmaker in history has been as prolific and impactful a player in basketball history. Of all the best pass first players, he’s the only one that was a Perineal mvp candidate and winner. He’s the gold standard for the point guard position still.. he was a revolutionary talent because of his size, and versatility. But at the same time he was on of those talents that wasn’t defined by traditional standards. He found his niche and he made it work to the highest degree. Before him, only jerry west was as dominant. Other than that, no guard ever had the level of impact on their teams success as magic. And besides curry as of recent, no pg in the last 30 years has been able to challenge his supremacy as the top dog.

The difference is everyone thinks they can shoot a three. But how many players have eyes in the back of their heads like Magic did? You try to copy Magic but you can’t . You can copy Curry and players do - badly . It’s one thing to design a play for your guard to shoot a three. You can’t tell him- pass the ball behind your head to the cutter when you have your back to the basket.

For what it's worth, EJ the DJ as he was known as at Michigan State (because he used to moonlight as a DJ) actually ruined us from Flint, Michigan in the '78 state championships. We had Trent Tucker who went on to set the all time Big 10 scoring record at Minnesota and lead the NY Knicks - we knew Magic was badass right away. Then he matched up with Larry Bird in the NCAA finals in '79 and won. Going on immediately to the Lakers to then finish the finals at center in place of Kareem. We knew it was the start of the redefinition of the NBA. From there we got Bird, Magic, Kareem, Julius Erving, Isiah Thomas, Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan and the guys who shaped NBA basketball for generations! Without these guys there would be no Shaq or Kobe, or Stephan or Dirk or the Admiral. We have greats because of greats and that's what makes all pro sports great...!

Magic was a Pg just because LA nededd a Pg but him could play any position beeing the best. Young people fail to understand why can't be a goat after Magic or Larry: isn't about stats or victory, is about dominance. Magic and Larry was the most incredible dominant player that i saw in basketball in my life. Boston without Bird should be a medium team; Parish, McHale, Dj, ecc (i really love all of them, to be clear) they would never have been All of famer without Bird. For Magic situation was less complicated but he made phenomenal and spectacular the game as no one ohther. And efficient: those 2 guys they had a ruthless desire to win (best percentage win in Nba, just for who love stats...). About pass: if you analise videos, Bird and Magic done the same type of pass (competition baby!) but Magic it made it magical which Bird made it simple. In live game you need always 3 replay to understand what had happened. In the end there's a reason if every player is called by name (Bird, Jordan, Lebron, ecc...) but no one call Magic Earvin Johnson: he is MAGIC, really magic. Boston celtics fan here.

I just watched your reaction to Magic.... all basketball fans should watch Magic. By now, I'm sure, you have watched more of him. You know what? In 1980 there were a lot of rumors that the NBA was shutting down... no one was going to the games, and there weren't players, good, exciting players, coming out of colleges. But, the finals of the NCAA, it was Indiana VS. Michigan, it was Bird (senior, Indiana) against Magic (sophomore, Michigan) and the excitement of those two carried over to the pros. Magic claimed hardship to play in the pros, and from a coin toss, a coin toss! L.A. won (Jerry Buss, I believe, called tails) and Magic was playing for the Lakers instead of Chicago. He signed a 10 year contract, a million per year. Totally unheard of. Everyone was saying it was ridiculous, no one was worth that... but they all shut up after game six, in Philadelphia, when Magic played center, guard, point guard, forward, and power forward... scoring 42 points, triple double with rebounds and assists, also saving the NBA... his rookie season... Jamaal Wilkes said his hands were still stinging hours after a game from Magic's passes. And yes, I'm a big fan of Magic, the Lakers... the NBA, LaBron, Jordan, all the powerhouse players since Magic wouldn't have the contracts they had or the stadiums to play in, if that coin toss came up heads... he was Great and underestimated... still is... Those were some GOOD times....

The state of the NBA was so bad before Magic and Bird came into the league, the FINALS WERE ON TAPE DELAY. There were no TV deals until that rivalry saved the league. Without Magic and Bird, Michael Jordan would be just another good player. They opened the door to the money and fame the current players enjoy today. As far as the best passer ever, it's no question. You said it yourself, he gets joy from passing and making his teammates better. I don't think there has been a player before or since who had that trait. MJ is the Goat. Kareem is 2. Magic/Bird are 3. They are essentially the same player. All the other players and rankings are subjective and debatable but my top 3 isn't.

I’m Bird is #1 Magic is #2 In my opinion. Watch Birds best passes. Magic will tell you the same thing. Magic is SO underrated it pisses me off. Look at his stats. He has the 2nd highest basketball IQ in history only behind Bird. Magic won his first NBA championship his ROOKIE year and has a finals MVP his rookie year. Bird got the rookie of the year by taking the Celtics from 29 wins the year before to 61 wins before he got help. To me they are the FATHERS of basketball. They saved basketball literally and changed the game in many ways. Mike is the GOAT but for me personally Bird and Magic are not far behind. Please do your research. It makes me sad that Magic doesn’t get the respect he deserves. And I’m a Bird fan. They are both GREAT players, leaders, high basketball IQ, passers, and dominate games. In my humble opinion

I think if you put 5 Magic Johnsons on the court against 5 of any other player, I think magic would win, just like I think 5 Bobby Orrs in hockey would beat any 5 of another guy.

Magic was the man before jorden ..in my opinion It's Magic jorden then Bird ...Nobody ...Nobody passes better basketball than Magic Erving Johnson..hands down ...I can't stand the players of today they just are weak to me ..these guys were warriors and entertainers at the same time They brought a show to basketball

Magic is the only player with as much court awareness as Bird. He wasn't as good of a shooter or rebounder. Man could he Pass and run an offense. Definitely my starting PG.

MAGIC AND BIRD DID SAVE THE NBA...BUT THEY WERE ALSO GLOBAL ICONS!!!...JORDAN DID NOT DO THAT BY HIMSELF...BURD AND MAGIC WERE RIGHT ALONG WITH HIM GLOBALIZING THE GAME!!!!...theres no other player that could fake another player clean out of view of the t.v. screen with a PASS....with the fancy dribbling yea, but not the pass...Magic doesn't get the GOAT nod from sooooo many because they're enamored with the high scorers...they put score first..which includes the dunking...the and-one type players...Magic stayed true to the Team First Motto....yet he showed us all that had he wanted to, he could've scored just as much as any scorer in the league!!...he has the greatest winning percentage in league history...THEY WANT TALK ABOUT THAT!...he came in as a rookie and went to the championship(finals)...he played his last full season game in 91...in the .championship (finals)..went to the finals 9 times out of 12 seasons...wouldve been 10 had Ralph Sampson not hit that last second buzzer beater....they were a threat each year Magic played!

Sorry for the directness, but someone who makes videos about the NBA and doesn't know everything there is to know about Magic, should make cooking videos and not about the NBA.

top 10? that's way too low.. he is the best point guard of all time unless you put John Stockton there.. But Magic was WAAAY more dominant. But Stockton is also the all time leader in assists AND steals.. but Magic has the highest assist average per game at like 11 or something. its hard NOT to put him in the top 5, he got 5 rings too.
@PeterAtkinson2 жыл бұрын
As a Jazz fan, you can’t put Stockton in the same conversation as Magic. Stockton is a legendary facilitator but he’s probably not even top 5 at the position. Magic Johnson, Steph Curry, Isiah Thomas, Oscar Robertson, Chris Paul and Jerry West are all better in my opinion. Magic is 4th on my list of the greatest players of all time. 👍👍
@soramirez54732 жыл бұрын
@@PeterAtkinson i gotta give respect to Stockton for what he did, but you right, I wont put him over Magic or Robertson.. Im not so sure about thomas and Paul.. Curry is a shooter not a pg to me.. I cant comment on Jerry West, im too young. Im too young for Robertson, but I know more of him, and he is more than just a pg.

@@soramirez5473 Stockton gets too much disrespect these days for sure, it’s great to see him actually get some praise for once mate! It’s always tough rating players you haven’t or barely seen play. I’m in my 30s so I haven’t seen The Big O or The Logo play either. I see, when you were referencing them as point guards you were talking more about them as facilitators, I think Stockton is second all time behind Magic in that respect. 👍👍
@soramirez54732 жыл бұрын
@@PeterAtkinson yes, a point guards job is to facilitate the team. for the most part.. So stockton gotta be up there for me as a point guard.. NOT as a GOAT.. which Magic is.

would yal put Isaiah Thomas and Chris Paul as pure point guard on that list top 3 and 4?
