Actually he didn't know. Look at his body language around 0:10 he was looking at the basket until it hit near the basket, once he saw it go in, he turned his head, put his head down and started to run back faster. He was probably thinking there's a good chance it would miss since it was up real high, but he had to make sure. Not a fan of either of them, but that's how I read it.
