The 2023 playoffs have come to a conclusion, and we've yet to have a repeat conference champion since the Warriors broke up.
Specifically in the East, I believe it highlighted some reasons why despite the common criticisms, LeBron's 8 straight finals appearances are more impressive than you remember.

This video was needed. Nobody remembers Bosh getting hurt in the playoffs in 2012. Nobody remembers kyrie limping through the 2015 playoffs. Nobody remembers 50/50 games, moments coming down to the wire yet somehow LeBron's team ends up on top. Nobody remembers LeBron going beast mode in deciding games where its do or die. You can talk about the competition all you'd like, but don't leave out the rest of the important details.

People acting like Lebron was going up against trash teams every year. 2011 celtics with 4 all stars and had just gone to game 7 of the finals the year before. 2011 bulls with 62 wins and mvp rose. 2014 1st seeded Pacers having literally the greatest defense statistically of all time. 2015 bulls with 3 all stars, gasol, rose, and butler along with reigning dpoy noah. Then the 2015 60 win hawks with 4 all stars. Oh and he beat both teams with his 3rd best player out and his 2nd best player injured. the 2018 60 win raptors and the 2nd seeded celtics in 2018 both series he wasnt favoured in and he still won. Oh and not to mention the injuries like u said. Bosh out vs the pacers and celtics in 2012, no problem. Love out for the entire 2015 playoffs and kyrie injured, no problem. Love being out for the crucial games 6 and 7 of the 2018 celtics series and he wins BOTH games with his 2nd best player being jeff green.

I mean even if we ingnore the Celtics winning 8 in a row, and going to 10 straight due to era. The Lakers also went to 7 finals in 8 years from 1982-89, and 9 in 12 years overall. It is incredibly difficult but their is precedence for stuff very similar to this in basketball. Heck the Warrors just went to 5 straight and injuries and infighting had to stop them. The Bulls went to 6 in 8 years. Someone else making it to 8 in a row in the next 50 + years wouldn't be that surprising, since players that consistently repeat success at nearly the level required to pull this off, seem to show up every decade. We just need 1 of them to get over the hump eventually. Maybe the new CBA leads to a new era of parity where things like this don't happen as much. Maybe expansion to 40 teams makes it that much more difficult to stack the deck. But who knows. I tend not to bet against greatness eventually happening in sports, because people are pretty much always proven wrong someday when you are betting against the field of the rest of history.

@KH-no7ph

Great piece. One added note on LeBron's "stacked" teams. Play-by-play data tells us that Bron's teams, when he wasn't on the floor those eight seasons, scored 17,310 points and gave up 18,040 points to their opponents, which translates to a 29-win team (in an 82-game season). I wouldn't call that stacked. Yes he played with some all-stars, but in the Cleveland years, when Kyrie was on the floor and Bron sat, the Cavs were just as bad as before LeBron came back to Cleveland. (In the minutes with Kyrie on the floor but not Bron, the Cavs were equivalent to a 35-win team.) And even in Miami, the Heat when Wade and Bosh were on the floor without Bron were only an even-up team (points and points allowed about even), while Bron with either of the other stars had success equivalent to a 64-win team; with all three stars the Heat were equivalent to a 70-win team. You could argue that some of this is LeBron's fault: always wanting to play with other star players, he was on a lot of top-heavy teams that didn't have enough rebounding, enough this or that--they were thin. But whereas Bron in those years was always successful in any configuration (in Miami, when Bron played without either Wade OR Bosh, the Heat were STILL equivalent to a 52-win team), the other stars could never carry those thin teams when Bron sat.
@adambomb611
@adambomb611 11 ай бұрын
LeBron has never played on as stacked a team as MJ. Without MJ the bulls went from a 57win team to a 55 win team. The Cavs and Heat without LeBron lost ~30 more games the following season.
@KH-no7ph
@KH-no7ph 11 ай бұрын
@@adambomb611 Right, and yet the general perception is that MJ played with role players while Bron played with HOFers and all-stars. People can list the names of teammates all they want, but the evidence says that LeBron's teams in their best years were average, but on the whole were basement level, while MJ's teams at least by midway through his career with the Bulls, were average at worst and at best contenders even without MJ. And yet, LeBron won 57 of every 82 games he played in between the ages of 21 and 35 (the same ages MJ played with the Bulls), while MJ won 56 out of every 82. Both players made the playoffs 13 times during those years. MJ on average took his teams 9.92 wins deep into the post-season (counting all first-round advances as 4 wins for fairness' sake), and LeBron on average led his teams 12.69 wins deep. The conclusion should be obvious--at the same ages, LeBron won more with worse teams. He's better.
@ernel7261
@ernel7261 10 ай бұрын
@adambomb611 LeBron played with many All Stars BUT MJ played with more defensive sounded teammates. Is Kyrie a lock down defender? Nah. He's ok defensively. Love too is like that, at least from the limited games I saw him play. Wade is better defensively, Bosh too. But Wade then have hamstring issues and that sapped his legs. All Star Games btw are popularity contests too, where there are times some All Stars that do deserve to be All Stars but they aren't All Stars. Then All Stars who don't deserve to be there. MJ on the other hand, played with teammates so good offensively AND defensively. They have CHEMISTRY while LeBron has to adjust, teammates has to adjust to him too.

He had an unprecedented amount of hype as a kid and somehow even then still blew the expectations out of the water, he’s clearly suffered from his own success back in his prime where’d he’d take rosters way past their limits like the 07 Cavs who had no business going into the finals, or the 2018 Cavs when everyone counted them out, he’s had his moments of failure like 2011 but like I said you don’t need to be a fan but you have to pay respect where respect is due and he’s more than earned it

Great vid as always. Does anyone else see any parallels between Lebron’s 2010s run to Brady’s 2010s run? I mean of course they’re different sports and all, but I often compare the two. Brady’s patriots made it to the afc championship game 8 years in a row, and won 3 super bowls during that run (just like Lebron won 3 NBA finals during that stretch). Both mounted epic comebacks (2016) and had won win they really should’ve lost (2013 NBA finals and 2014 SB).

No matter how "weak" the conference was, do you see anybody else go to 5, 6, 7, or 8 straight finals? In the last 30 years? There's always a "weak" conference. Even in a "strong" conference, most teams only really gave one tough competitor on their way to a finals. Sometimes two. That's how seeding works. A strong conference gets overblown a lot of the time.

I mean, he also formed super teams that usually had a collection trio of 3 of the top 15 players in the league. And yes, there's always a weak conference, but it depends how weak. The team West was so much better that in all the Finals, the Cavs did not look like they belonged there and a million things had to go wrong just so they could beat Golden State. If he was out there winning 60 games every season and then dominating the playoffs, then the run would certainly be impressive and he would certainly deserve the accolades that his fans think he does.

Even with the East was weak and his teammates being stacked compared to his competition is true to an extent, the toll of competing all those years in a row takes a lot of dedication, skill, and a good work ethic. It's even more impressive because he won 3/8 during that time, one was a 3-1 comeback and back to the East being weak compared to his team, there were other power houses after he left the East, like Philly, Boston, Milwaukee and Toronto. COMBINBED those four teams from 2018 - 2023 have only, made the finals three times and lost twice, and one being back to back with TOR and MIL 2019 and 2020 winning. When Bron was still in the East during the 2014-2018, these teams all hit there stride during during that time, with PHI and BOS showing up in 2017 and 2018, TOR being around all four years and MIL finally emerging after he left(They were still competitive before that). When he left the East was still open and yet those four teams in the same span couldn't do what he did. Even if you factor in his first four seasons with MIA, there were still competitive teams at the top end of the conference, they were CHI, BOS, ORL and IND. Bron won even more in that four year frame than he did the second time with CLE. It gets even worst, if Boston didn't form the big three in 2008, The Lebron led Cavs were pretty much meant to run the Eastern conference for years but they shifted that power away from him and even ORL who became competitive around the same time due to Dwight.

All of the teams i just named were finals bound if LeBron James doesn't exist, the only reason we look at the Raptors and Hawks the way we do is because of how weak LeBron made them look, he made a mockery of them. You have to apply context both ways. Lebron faced better teams in the finals, but MJ faced better teams prior to the finals. Lebron faced the warriors and spurs multiple times in the finals, whilst MJ faced the Celtics and Pistons multiple times in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Unpopular opinion: Winning the 2011 title wouldn't have helped Lebron's legacy . Let's say that LeBron didn't play out of his mind and just "choked a bit less" to the point where the Heat would win the 2011 title. Dwayne Wade would certainly have won the Finals Mvp since he was by far the best Heat player this series, arguably even better than Dirk . So LeBron would technically get his "elusive" first title on his first try with a good roster around him but can you imagine how much the media would have clowned him for not winning a title his first 7 seasons after being labeled " The Chosen one" and the greatest prospect ever while another player who was drafted the same year as him(D-Wade) already won a ring and a finals MVP in his 3rd year , then LeBron decides to join forces with him and Wade wins his second Finals MVP on the same team as LeBron? Also, if the Heat had 3peated in their first 3 seasons right after forming their big 3 , people would have put an (even bigger) asterisk on LeBron 's Heat rings and would question their value the same way they do for KD's warriors rings, saying that it was cheating his way to a ring ,that their superteam had too unfair of an advantage and that there was no parity in the league . The reason Lebron's Heat rings were more respected than Kd's Warriors rings is that the team didn't show its superiority right off the gate and he had to overcome adversity after the 2011 Finals and after going down 3-2 against the Celtics and having the legendary game 6 performance in Boston

TLDR the 2011 title does nothing for LeBron because he played subpar? I don't think so, at the time that absolutely would've been talk of the town and who knows if he would've been as motivated to get even better without the fuel that loss gave him. However after the fact like today no one would care how bad he played or not winning FMVP, only that he won would matter.
@iansanchez966
@iansanchez966 11 ай бұрын
If LeBron gets his first ring with Wade as FMVP, ppl would've trashed him for "being carried" or something like that. Not to mention, I wonder if LeBron would've had the drive to go to 8 straight if he had not first suffered that failure vs. Dallas. It's a black mark, but arguably, without that, he doesn't become as great as he became

The one and only time a loosing record is praised. It's not the first time a player has made the finals this many times in a row. Bill Russel made the finals 10 straight times and his record was 9-1. Opposed to Flop's 3-5 record. What is more impressive is a player to be able to repeat a threepeat. There is only one player that has done that.

The best team LeBron ever joined is the 47 win Heat. MJ on the other hand joined a 55 win Bulls team. LeBron and the Heat immediately went to the finals. MJ and the Bulls lost in the 2nd round. They made a trade for MVP candidate Rodman and were then able to win. How does LeBron get so much hate for “super teams?”

Bro. No one has forgotten. It's just not something that really moves people like that. I think winning 5 finals in 9 years like magic, or winning 5 finals in 10 years like Kobe, or even winning 5 finals across 15 years like Duncan are all more impressive then simply getting to 8 straight finals. Because if we really valued finals appearances like that Jerry west need to be a top 5-10 player of all time. But he ain't because he lost almost all his finals. We like to talk about winners. Not almost winners. Or am I just a hater 😆
@iansanchez966
@iansanchez966 11 ай бұрын
That's not a great comparison. West is 1-8 in the Finals, never made more than 3 straight, many of those years they only had to win 1 playoff series to make the Finals. Also, several of West's finals losses came in winnable series that went to game 7. Aside from 2011, LeBron shows up in the Finals and when it's close, puts his team over the top. Most of those Finals losses were not winnable series, his team was usually outmatched. Winning at least 3 playoff series 8 years in a row is impressive, like it or not

I’m not a Bron hater he’s one of the Greatest ever but He teamed up with the best player in East at the time(Wade) and Bosh was an elite big at the time weaking the East then did it again a couple years later with (Kyrie). Who were the best teams Lebron beat during that run? Pacers with Paul George? One legit allstar. An old Celtics Team? A fraudulent raptors team? Derrick rose bulls? One legit allstar. And lebron getting AD with the lakers would be like MJ getting Hakeem or David Robinson. In their primes

Then how come nobody even really met him. I would consider Melo AT LEAST better then “elite” Bosh. Yet he only met LeBron once and it was a lower seed. People harp on how easy it is but everybody struggles to get even to LeBron. Dwight could have met Bron in 2011 with Orlando l but didn’t, Wade in 07,09, and 10 could have met Bron but didn’t, even Bosh could have met Bron in 07, Wall coudl have met Bron but didn’t, Giannis coudl have met Bron in 2018 but didn’t. The east still had talented players and the only teams that consistently met him were teams that were putting away the hall of fame individual talent with good pieces.

MJ was lucky to get Scottie Pippen drafted to his team, and who then took one of the worst contracts in NBA history that allowed them to build around Jordan, then trading for another HoFer to extend his prime. Let's not act like he did it alone. He just had more help from his team. LeBron decided to form his own team. Neither is good or bad, they simply are. It's funny that the two most dominant rosters in recent NBA history were created because of lucky cap shenanigans and stars underestimating their value.

Any legit superstar can make The Finals 8x in a row in the weaker conference, with handpicked superteams, and Adam Silver in their back pocket. That shit is grossly overrated. To think that he only "won" 3 titles in that time frame is disgusting. If he were in the West during that same stretch, those 8 straight appearances would've never happened. He can barely make the playoffs now without midseason trades & various roster moves. This is the objective, inconvenient truth. 💯
