Lec 57: The Iron Cage of Bureaucracy | Max Weber

In this lecture, we will study about:
1. Concept of Power as propounded by Max Weber.
2. Weber uses the German word Herrschaft for legitimate form of power which is called as authority or domination.
3. Max Weber constructed an ideal type of authority.
4. Weber argues that there are three types of authority namely Traditional authority, Charismatic authority and Legal-Rational authority.
5. Whereas Marx was talking about Modes of Production, Max Weber deals with modes of authority in his famous work Class, Status and party.
6. Max Weber argues Bureaucracy as Legal Rational authority is most superior and efficient form of organisation of work.
7. Weber also talks about Bureaucracy as an Iron cage.

Sir,i have a question..Legal rational authority me bhi to hume traditional elements dekhne ko milte hai like upsc conducts exam every year in a same pattern though it is based on legal and rational manner but every years they follows the same pattern i.e.,Prelims,Mains and Interview,it has become a tradition that exam has to be conducted in this way only not other way around... though i agree these stages of exam are conducted in legal rational manner to test the technical competence of candidates whether they are cabale of administrating or not but they follow the exact pattern & do not deviate from it because it has become a tradition or notion to conduct the exam in this manner only..

Your assessment and analysis is correct... Traditional elements could also be found in Legal Rational authority and vice-versa.... For instance the practice of constitutional monarchy in England is also an example of tradition embedded in Legal Rational authority.... Please, keep in mind that Weber is talking about Ideal or Pure type and not the Totality of Reality which is infinite and vast!!
