1. If the distance for the piston to reach a0 (speed of sound) gets smaller in your plots, would there be a stronger shock wave, why? yes. 2. If the piston travels at the speed of sound continuously in an infinite duct, would there be a shock wave built? no. 3. For a super sonic airplane, perhaps the distance to reach ao is very short and that's why a sonic boom occurs even the airplane moves at ao.
