I was in Vancouver Friday November 3rd talking at an event sponsored by the very active University of British Columbia Free Speech Club (start one on your campus -- if you're a student, that is :)).
I wanted to delve more deeply into the ideology on the radical side of the leftist spectrum, and to specifically address the idea of white privilege. Hopefully that's what I did.

Michael Imad I love hearing this. How exactly is one race of people enriched? And if that’s the case how did Obama do it? How did Oprah, Chappelle, Kevin Heart, 80% of professional athletes, the highest paid musicians do it? How did the 17% of business owners that are black do it? How did Charlemagne tha God and the Breakfast Club guys do it? 8% of millionaires are black. How did all those people become millionaires? How do blacks make up 36% of college enrollment? Could it possibly be that they worked hard? Comments like yours where these people think whites are just rolling out of bed, getting any job they want at any pay they want, just strolling through life with no issues? Whites never get fired, never get arrested, never get pulled over - even though more whites are killed by police than blacks. 1004 people were killed by police in 2019, 235 were black. Is that the enriching of one race you’re talking about? And you’re exactly right - the economic system is built to favor those who work hard, thus become wealthy. They don’t start wealthy. 85% of millionaires are FIRST GENERATION wealthy - which means they made that money from nothing. 8% of millionaires are black by the way. You find me someone who’s been permanently poor and I’ll show you someone who hasn’t worked hard. They’re fine getting a government check to stay home and do nothing, while the wealthy person is out working 80 hours a week. I’ve never met a single wealthy person who doesn’t work their ass off. Not one. Notice I didn’t mention race in that, because it’s true regardless of race.

01:11:30 I was born in Eastern Europe before the fall of communism and grew up in the subsequent years. While on vacation in July 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland, I stubmbled upon a small demonstration of scottish and english communists in front of the Buchanan Galleries. One self titled economist and marxist tried to give me some leaflets which I refused and then started debating him about the horrors that communism had caused in my home country and how we were still struggling with the fallout of that system, almost thirty years after it disappeared. At this point, the self titled economist and marxist gave me exactly this argument that Dr. Peterson also describes, namely that what my country had experienced was not properly introduced communism, but rather a perverted, not "by the book" version of it. The first time I heard Peterson make this point it hit me like a ton of bricks. People arguing for this kind of system are basically oblivious of what has happened in the countries that more or less willingly had to apply it. And anybody should be grateful about being allowed to live in a society which does not suppress individual freedoms for the sake of ideology.

@breabanm
@breabanm 6 жыл бұрын
Vietnam and Cuba are actually very bad examples of succesful communism. Let's take Vietnam. While still being based on a communist ideology, Vietnam underwent since the late eighties a series of liberalising reforms basically allowing some proportion of free enterprise and market economy. So the reason Vietnam is experiencing economic success nowadays is actually due to the fact that they are not implementing communism "by the book" any more and have made a transition towards a more capitalist system (they even have a stock market and allow foreign investment!). The success story of Cuba is mostly based on the regime being propped up by external subsidies and foreign aid (amounting to billions of dollars per year), first of all from the USSR, then after its collapse in 1991, from China, then Venezuela, Bolivia and even the US. Following the withdrawal of USSR aid after 1991, Cuba went into a depression and was forced to implement limited free market policies in order to recover. While the trade embargo imposed by the US surely did some economic damage, this is a case at best of wait and see. As of now, the country seems to have been liberalising at an unusual fast pace over the last few years. This is proof once more that adhering to "by the book" communism is not sustainable in the long run.

@@Steven-gs8oh hey Randy! You’ve managed to spectacularly confuse a few postmodern concepts in your response - maybe you meant existentialist nihilism or absurdism? Your cursory google searches aside, Nietzsche describes Nihilism as an active endeavor taken up on the backs of each and every one of us to destroy meaning in the world and disassemble knowledge totalities. To say that “life is meaningless” not only constitutes the exact sort of totality which Nihilism espouses, it ignores the task - and indeed meaning - which it imbues the philosopher. Nihilism involves (or means) the man of ressentiment overcoming his epistemological obstacles, and it leaves the door open to meaningful knowledge creation after the dust settles from the destruction. Thank you Jordan Peterson for mentioning Bulgaria as well. I was born in the early 90s in Bulgaria, just a couple years after the official fall of communism. My parents decided to apply for the green card lottery in the late 90s and by a miracle, we ended up winning! We moved with absolutely nothing all the way to the USA, in Los Angeles. Fast forward 22 years and seeing what is happening to our current state of society in CA, the US, etc, has been quite scary. The stories my parents and grandma have shared with me about communism are horrific, but crucial to history. I'd like to share one of these stories from my grandma, who was born in 1930 and is 91 years old today actually! The story is disturbing to hear, but it puts things and history in perspective: During the 40s, my grandma (who was just a little girl) said she remembers seeing mass graves of dead bodies in large dirt pits ready to be burned and/or buried (which was nothing new and common during that time). Of course, these were people that opposed the communist regime or were attempting to flee. She recalls her father would see neighborhood commoners pick-pocketing the dead bodies for change, watches, anything that was worth a penny. That is how desensitized people had become simply due to seeing death so often and for literally just scraping by... And this was only the beginning of the communist regime in Bulgaria. Her father told her in that moment, to never disrespect a deceased body in this way and that they will never reach this low. Unfortunately, some people had no other choice as this was their only way to get by. I'd like to leave this on a positive note however, that by sharing these stories and listening to Jordan's lectures is so necessary for us to truly learn from history and move forward. Sending much love to you all that have experienced the horrors of communism.

My family and I lived a very similar experience in Poland. My mom’s brother, who already won the lottery and had been living in NYC for the past couple of years decided to enter my mom and our family into the lottery. By some miracle we won and my mom, dad, older brother and I moved to the US in 1995. My Grandmother was born in 1931 and was just a little girl when the Nazis invaded Poland. She’s told me this story a couple of times and it really stuck with me. One day she, her maternal grandparents, her older cousin and her cousin’s 1 month old baby were hiding out in a shed. Suddenly they were hit with a bomb. Once things settled down a bit my Grandmother stood up and saw her cousin’s leg was completely blown off from the impact. Not only that but the baby’s arms and legs were completely torn off from her little body. Her mother was holding a deceased head and torso and she was also bleeding profusely. Luckily they survived. But just imagine that sight for a second. Imagine how her cousin felt holding her dead baby daughter. It was horrendous and she experienced nightmares for many years. I once watched another debate where Peterson asked a young lady who was trying to act smart if she thinks she is better off than her Grandparents to which she replied no. I was just shocked to hear that. I highly doubt her grandparents would be allowed to sit in on a debate about identity politics, religion, cancel culture, feminism. I also highly doubt her grandparents had a computer, a cell phone, cable tv with 300+ channels, an Amazon prime membership, Uber, etc. etc. Like how can one even say such a thing I don’t really get it. People nowadays take so many basic things and basic human rights for granted. My family and I are by no means wealthy but we do ok . We enjoy many perks of modern technologies and access to everything from some of the best doctors in the world, the ability to travel, the ability to go to the grocery store and buy whatever the heck you want. Why in the world would anyone want to return to communism or socialism? Why would you support Marxism and think capitalism is a bad concept. You simply cannot have equal opportunity and equal outcome at the same time. We are individuals, not robots and even robots are not all perfect. I really hope America and the entire western world wakes up before it’s too damn late

Professor Daniel Nagin is the recipient of the prestigious Stockholm Prize on Criminology. His research focuses on the evolution of criminal and antisocial behaviours and the development of statistical methods for analysing longitudinal data. Daniel Nagin states that studies on the use of lethal force come to conflicting conclusions. Some studies have concluded that minorities are disproportionately targeted, and others reach the opposite conclusion. In fact, in a recent study on this issue, Roland Fryer from Harvard reached the conclusion that it depends on what kind of tactic you’re talking about. He concluded that for non-lethal uses of force, involving things like handcuffing the person, shoving them, or having some physical contact with them, those events were in the order of 10 to 25 percent more likely for blacks than for whites. On the other hand, he reached the conclusion that, if anything, lethal use of force is more common among whites than blacks. So it’s hard to draw really strong conclusions one way or the other on this issue.

@@j_freed But since reason isn't universal, logical (in)consistency is just one more oppressive tool, so the heck with it. But more importantly, since there is no objective truth to them, then engaging in dialogue with them is futile, as there is no truth to discover. I was actually wondering how one should go about arguing a post modernist. I think the proper response to one of those might be to point the logical fallacies in case someone innocent and naive is involved (bystander or believer), but otherwise simply ignore their arguments. After all, by their own ideology, their arguments are simply an oppressive means to try to oppress us and there is no truth to them, so might as well just define them as wrong and be done with it. Not to mention their own ideology justifies the use of force against them, too. (I'm not advocating this, as this is not our ideology).

Actually JP is totally wrong. AS I'm a PROUD Post Modernist and I ONLY believe in Facts! That's why I'm always right! I believe what IS TRUE or what has been PROVEN true using the Scientific method which is how us humans have learned EVERYTHING we know today about the World Around us. JP Fans and hopeless conformists like him instead believe WHAT THEY ARE TOLD TO BELIEVE Whether it is True or not and they call his IDIOCY 'faith'. Faith is believing in something you KNOW in your heart is not true, which is why I feel we should shorten faith to 'IDIOCY' because it means the same thing. JP's group-think Conformity is what destroys societies and stifles free expression of thought. And while I agree that the Bill in Canada is wrong that you should never criminalize speech, I don't see it even remotely coming to the USA because Liberals and Post Modernists and Leftists and SWJ's all believe in FACTS and TRUTH. It's people like Trump and the Republicans who represent the GREATEST WAR UPON SCIENCE and Truth our Country has ever seen. Peterson however, likes Trump, knowing Trump is a fascist wanna-be dictator and Peterson is so dangerously wrong he can't even see the danger in allowing a criminal like Trump to destroy our Democracy!

@@ColonPal I can't tell if this is a troll comment. I suspect it is. But nonetheless I just want you to know that faith is not believing in something you know to be false. Makes no sense. Not everyone is made for university education and, likewise, not all of us are built for professional trades. Meanwhile, we have a surfeit of colleges in the U.S and a paucity of trade schools. And the Left consistently touts college as the only means out of poverty and working class. But, really, why not be part of the $60/hour working class? Ain't half bad if you have the skill for it. Sign me up.

They left us a long time ago as they have just kept driving down that road farther to the left, and ruining any weight that our degrees once held. Most technology companies would rather have a technical college graduate with certifications, than the most high honors university student these days. The ONLY realms left for major universities are Law, Medicine, and certain very specific research sciences. All of those are simply limited in number anyway. You will absolutely get a cheaper, better, and better paying start to life in the technical, service, or business world today, by simply attending an associated college/school and getting the desirable certifications and proof of expertise. End of list.

James T Cat Cato your demonization of our beliefs shows your years of school brainwashing. We want people to learn to feed themselves. You obviously want people dependent on government. Nowhere in western society is the impoverishment of statism more clear than in the educational system which has produced more failure of education that the state controlled school system that you proclaim as so good. Every marker education-wise has fallen in western civilization since the heavy hand of the state has forced its way into the schools, including an aggregate fall of general IQ. In other words your socialist education system has already proven a failure. Especially when you consider that untrained home schoolers score exceedingly above those educated by the state

It seems absolutely mind boggling to me that people are "fighting for racial equality" in DIRECT contradiction to what Dr. King fought and died for. Character over characteristics. Now we got people who are singularly focused, obsessively so, on those immutable characteristics. I don't understand how so many people missed that message. And not just missed it, but missed it so spectacularly that they persist in the absolute opposite direction. What a crazy world we live in, that siding with Dr. King is considered a radical position by people who claim to fight for racial (or whatever sectionality) equality.

I agree with you sir... however if a group of like minded individuals gather to create a 'body' organisation or whatever, dare I say a culture, then create an ideology and a belief that they are different from another group and in some cases superior then they themselves create identity. Which by it's exclusive set up means there is no possibility to live in this day and age without identity politics. The them and us seems to be woven into the fabric of humanity and the evolution of mankind since the dawn of time. Until that is humanity evolves beyond our 'spacesuits' and gender etc, and focus on our collective identity as divine human spirits.

@De Factio I'm not sure how I overly simplified my response. Does it need more? Ultimately there are going to be collectives, tribes, etc based upon a common ideology. White male ideology although full of individuals will have a common theme, goal, self projection and protectionism; no different than any other group. Within the distribution of power and wealth JP and his cohort are at the top of the food chain in that they are in the seat of power and control. Evolution or whatever you call it demonstrates that those with the power often look alike and come from the same type of background they have the privilege of power and happen to be white (caucasian males). I think we put way too much emphasis on demonising the group that are currently in power now. Let's not forget that all people in power do all they can to keep a hold of this power and it's been like this from the dawn of time. This is not a unique position for the powerful to preclude other groups for those who they identify with in a nepotistic manner. To deny this would be blatantly foolish. Regardless whether the group in power and those who benefit from such structures deny or accept their position is irrelevant. Tacit or implicit membership cannot be helped by individuals who are born into any group of privilege. It is a fact non the less. It would be natural to deny this as there is something of a stigma to accept you are part of the haves, rather than the perverted pride the have-nots take in proclaiming their poverty and coming from the 'ghetto' (aka rap fame). I can't quite put my finger on it as to why JP fails to see or speak about this so clearly as I don't think he should be held accountable for the system we have inherited. However perhaps there is an overly onerous burden to change the status quo if one acknowledges white privilege s a thing and one is a part of that and by virtue of being part of that group have benefited from membership. Crazy, that might mean ones achievements asa member of this group is not as great an achievement as pier or counterpart who is not a member of the the golden circle. As we all know that the word privilege means, right?

before being so critical and over and over again proclaiming his disgust by soviets, Peterson should take in to account the devastation that just ww2, not counting ww1, caused to Soviet union and implement his own method of putting himself in the shoes of a monster. Imagine this Canada: 2/3 of 20-21 years old men gone, 20% of population gone, scorched land 8.000-10.000 towns and villages burned to the ground, every last resort, literally melting spoons and forks to produce weapons is used to defend very existence, pure survival. By the skin of their teeth nation barely survives, completely crippled, but survives 4 years of constant attempts of USA capital supported Hitler to annihilate everything and everybody. Immediately follows cold war with USA, the most powerful economy and military force in the world history. I think its a miracle to still exist after all that, let alone be prosperous as Russia is becoming today. Whatever Soviet union was, it was the only way to organize society to save it from complete extermination. Jordon Peterson is a modern day Socrates Truly an exceptional teacher/philosopher of politics and the essence of being
@FirstLast-rb5zj
@FirstLast-rb5zj 4 жыл бұрын
As much as I like Peterson he's not immune to making mistakes either. He's from a liberal institute and the foundation for much of the thinking in that institute is grounded in social justice. For example, the whole argument about more differences within groups than between is a stock social justice argument used to apologise for their own racist beliefs, ironically, the denial of biology. Peterson is attacking it while still relying on one of their arguments for it. It's not the case that if you're on the other side of the liberal argument for why their racism is good that you're a racist. That entirely frames the narrative from the backdrop of social justice gross over simplification. While he's right to point out that it's hypocritical when it comes to the promotion of diversity he fails to examine the foundation of his argument and slips into the liberal extremist trap of saying it's this way otherwise you're racist. Everyone makes mistakes but it shows no one is perfect and it''s very easy to do. The argument about there being more differences within groups than between groups or the other way around is nearly always hogwash because it's such an oversimplification it doesn't mean anything. It's typically used by social justice extremists to deny the differences between groups. If you say there's one side or that argument or another then then you're failing to rise above it. What differences? What exact scale and distribution? Though Jordan is stuck with that foundation he still seems to override it, for example talking about group differences between men and women. It does not appear to be a fatal flaw. If you say well there are more differences between women than between the group of women and men then it still fails to account for things such as virtually all women have mammary organs but virtually all men do not. Groups do not form out of the ether drawn from arbitrary differences and sometimes you can't always quantify things. One big difference can make all the difference against a thousand minor differences. In his defence he may have failed to delineate between introducing their argument as a given and taking it as a given to expose the hypocrisy in it.

First Last I think his notion on differences on groups is concentrating on the near infinite amount of groups there are, and group combinations, eg the usual: race, ethnicity, gender, sex, and sexual attraction, but more uncommon groups would include geography, iq, personality, attractiveness, age, height, weight, hair colour, eye colour, political affiliation, wealth. As you can see the list goes on and can be multiplied. I don’t know if I’ve articulated that as well as I could have but I’m sure you can see the point I’m making.

I don't think he is saying that at all. As far as I know he has acknowledged the horrors of colonization and slavery. He just has a much broader view of human suffering that applies to many groups. Keep in mind that JBP is from Canada and our demographic is much different than the US. There is still racism but it is not as intense and people are generally far more tolerant and accepting of other cultures. I would say the case here in BC is much that we are far too tolerant to other ethnicities. A lot of our 'minority' group newcomers take advantage of a decent system and abuse the privileges we have built up over the past 150 years of pioneer hood. Any families who happened to be white are silenced with the race card if they attempt to call a fair game and apply one standard to all residents. Its this reason and many more that what Jordan Peterson says is relevant and important. Identity politics is awful and gives some validation to some people while creating an perception that you can cop out of personal responsibility on the basis of your oppressed group identity regardless of your actual circumstances. Its dangerous stuff and it is that of an ideology that could ruin an entire civilization.

I'm 53, lived in several countries, served in our military, raised children, operated a business, and became disabled. I'm white, somewhat conservative, non-religious but not atheist. What I've witnessed since Bob Rae was premiere of Ontario, and now with McGuinty who ran away, followed by Wynne with Trudeau as PM, a considerable degradation of Canadian society. Jordan you have my utmost respect. You are a great speaker, knowledgeable, caring, sincere. I really like your presentation at Queen's and was horrified by the behaviour including the banging/breaking of windows. You are right, play the long game, and don't get sucked into the vortex. I am from Ukraine and really terrified that such kind of things are needed to explain to adult people in Western society. It's like if you listen how a person try to explain why Hitler was wrong and you shouldn't repeat building Nazi or Fascist State with a bit different approach. Seriously guys just read history of the Soviet Union and see what kind of decisions were made and why they were made and what are the fundamentals. Lenin and Stalin weren't stupid they made exactly what should to be made to implement their ideology. They knew that changes must be fast and extremely cruel otherwise society will wake up and tear away that inhuman doctrine. By the way not sure that it is well known in the West but one of the fundamentals of the Communistic ideology was World Revolution it was Communists believed that Communists State lose competition to the Capitalism that is why they needed to conquer the world first. And that is why they didn't even tried to build Communism in 1/6 part of the earth which was Soviet Union and all the resources of the country put into the war. So Communism doctrine was build on the difference between social classes (poor and rich) and it is not that difficult to become poor and not try to earn more money than average if it is really necessary despite that tens of millions where killed to achieve “equality” Identity politics based on the identities which change much harder (if possible) and I can't even imagine how many people are needed to be killed to achieve goal of the Identity Revolution. And have no doubts that achievement of the ”Great Goal" will require to spread it all over the World. So on your site I would start to be worry and think how to stop this as soon as possible and God help you with that.

@@kofola9145 Let me know if you ever find a communist state that carries that out. It might be interesting, then again it may not differ substantially from current socialist experiments. I think the centralization of power in the hands of a few (and the corruption that accompanies it) may be inevitable in any system, time will tell whether I am correct in thinking so.

@@markhynes1940 maps of meaning is religious only in metaphor. It has no dogma or anything like that. It’s a philosophical and psychological attempt to understand why normal people could do evil things. The reference to God in the book is a metaphor for the highest value you have for example.

Apparently a very similar thing to the USSR happened in Zimbabwe. When they went after the farmers "twisted" the law and "repatriated" the land. Of course they blamed the famine occurred on a "Force Majeure", and got help from the world... Then more than 20 years after that they spoke about their great success when 20,000 new farmers made barely a third of the crops that 6,000 previous farmers made in their time. Then came a president that got sense and asked the previous land owners to return and get the land taken from them back... Socialism never worked well, never works well and will never ever work well anywhere in the world. The problem with Socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money. M. Thatcher.

@@williamoccam3681 There is nothing more inefficient than the government to achieve anything. I wouldn't want to trust more than the bare necesities with it. Capitalism is the only method proven to uplift the most people out of poverty. It is very naive to think the left with its shallow slogans of equality and equity can do better because it puts absolute power in the hands of the least deserved, the government.
