This sums up the vast majority of things that I repair, something small and another factor. The other factor is usually that the previous owner didn't like or had grown tired of the item. The vast majority of appliances are thrown out because of something trivial, e.g. blocked pump and are also dated or have rust or some superficial damage. It's a great hobby.

Same thing happend to me. I won an auction for a small amplifier sold as faulty, cutting out when volume increased. Looked at the requirements and it needed 12v at 2amp and the psu was rated at 12v ,0.5amp. £1 incuding delivery was one of my better wins.

JRC had once made a MF/HF radio with an underrated capacitor in the power amplifier section. It was supposed to be 50vdc and it was rated at 25v. We had to butt splice in the proper capacitor and clip out all the 25v ones that were already installed on sea going vessels.

Hopefully they weren't moving at the time. I get awfully sea sick 🤮😂😂😂😂

Actually, I was surprised as the very low res on that thing. After all, it has an HDMI port on it, which seems overkill for that res. Since it appears to also take an SD card (I think) it might be cute to make some kind of holiday mini videos and shine it on a window for passersby to see.
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
Thanks Blondie, yes it's resolution is very poor by today's standards. Yes a small holiday player would be good, apart from we are very remote and our nearest neighbours are about 1/4 mile away so I guess no one would see it. Where we used to live I built a xmas light show with RGB addressable pixels and syncronised it all to music. There's a few videos on the channel if you scroll back far enough!

In cases where the power adapter is the correct voltage/amperage, I don't know about others, but the very first thing I do is to check the voltage of the adapter and if the voltage is correct, then I do a load test on the adapter. Many times, an adapter will fail to where, without load, the voltage is correct, but as soon as there's a load, it drops right off. I have this issue now and then with our security cameras. Some are outside and when one stops working, it's always been the adapter giving up the ghost. Using a test adapter always confirms this. Fortunately, these adapters are easy to fix.

Several years ago, i bought a projector from a "surplus outlet" kind of place for $5, didn't work (marked as such) got it home, opened it up, and literally 1 skid mark on the PCB, tiny sot23 n-channel fet... took me all of 11 minutes to replace it, and the projector works perfect to this day.

Nice 👍I've had a couple of items where it's just been one tiny component. The SSD I repaired was one that springs to mind with just 1 shorted SMD cap.

I still have a old slide 35mm projector and dozens of family pictures which I intend to get on print! I have to power it up with a variance as the halogen bulb tends to blow up if switched straight off the mains . You can’t get the bulbs nowadays apart from eBay which is risky! There is a camera shop not to far away who will do prints chemically but it ain’t cheap! I could get them scanned on to jpeg but I have heard if you want to keep them for decades get them onto photos as jpeg won’t last forever! I have family videos in Betamax but don’t have a working Betamax player to play them! Nothing lasts nowadays!😅Fraser😊

Well, a good use will be to use a Pi and run a clock through it, and project it on the wall.
@BlondieHappyGuy Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would be cute. Besides the clock, perhaps having the Pi (or ESP32) reach out to a weather feed and display current weather data. Fun stuff.

🤣🤣 First guess was a power supply issue. But was taken by suprise that it went that way.
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes it was cash converters that sold it on Ebay so I can only guess they got the power supplies mixed up with a similar one perhaps? I still think the power socket had a dry joint too...
@JohnDoe-bd5sz6 ай бұрын
My first guess was a dried out capacitor, this usually drops the DC voltage and the flickering was a good indication that it did not get the juice it was wanting. The wrong powersupply with only 9 volts is very much akin to what happens when the capacitors dries up, the DC component drops and the "AC" component gets bigger.
