Check your local state laws for headlights. I believe most states require headlights to be white or near-white. Blue may confuse some drivers that you're a police car.

+Jason Wang Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Mazda projector is a halogen projector, which still shouldn't be used for HIDs. The proper projector is fitted for HID bulbs since they don't typically have squirrel finders. On my car the stock halogen projectors had two square boxes above the cutoff line which produces glare when a more luminous bulb like HID is used. Plus you will get far greater width coverage with a proper projector. Still, putting an HID in a halogen projector is better than in a reflector headlight.

+flurryblizzard That's not quite correct. LEDs don't create NEARLY as much heat as halogen bulbs do, and they also create a TON less heat than HID bulbs do. The reason for all the huge heatsinks on LEDs isn't because they got super hot-- it's because they're semiconductors, and heat over about 160 degrees will obliterate a semiconductor and kill it in very short order. By definition, and LED light HAS to stay cool (for a certain value of "cool") or else it'll die very quickly. Also by definition, they CAN'T get as hot as a halogen or HID bulb, because they aren't consuming as much power as either of those technologies do. Less power = less heat, period, because it's power that creates heat due to electrical resistance. Bear in mind that 100% of the light created by a halogen bulb is a result of HEATING the filament up with a controlled electrical short until it's glowing white hot. And 100% of the light created by an HID bulb is created by an electric arc (like a welder) through a gas until that gas gets hot enough to MELT metal salts into a plasma phase where they'll emit light due to electron excitation. LEDs, by contrast, emit light by electrons crossing a semiconductor barrier and exciting a phosphor as they do so. I'm with everyone on sticking to HID for a little while longer, because LED and laser will both be better very soon, but it's likely they'll always perform poorly in headlights that aren't designed specifically around their light output characteristics. They'll be amazing on cars that come with them from the factory, but not on anything else unless you're replacing the whole headlamp unit with one that's made for the emitters they're using (and even then, only if it's well designed). For what it's worth, you can find halogen headlights that will put almost every LED or HID headlight to shame in terms of actual usable light performance. But that's not because halogen headlights are superior-- it's that the vast majority of headlights that are using LED or HID are not very well designed and make poor use of the light they output. HID at 35 watts is putting out 2.7 TIMES as much luminous flux as a 35 watt halogen headlight, but if you just put an HID conversion kit in your car that came with halogen headlights from the factory, it's going to be outperformed at the same wattage by a good set of Hella or Cibie headlamps using halogen bulbs even though they're working with just over 1/3 as much actual light output. There's also the issue of higher wattage bulbs giving people the illusion of brighter light. Yes, they put out a brighter light, but how well they do that is entirely a function of the headlamp's lens and reflector, not the bulb's wattage. You're better off spending good money on good reflectors and lenses than on brighter, higher tech light bulbs, because if you have crappy headlamp reflectors and lenses, most of the light you're adding is going to be wasted on the sky and blinding other traffic instead of lighting up the road where you want to be able to see. Don't compensate for poor light usage with mroe light-- compensate with poor light usage with good light usage instead. You'll never regret that choice, especially in rain, snow, dust, fog, or foliage in the woods if you're in a truck or jeep. When you add lots more light to your headlights-- ALL of that light is going to reflect off of EVERYTHING and come right back in your face and blind you (even if not painfully-- it WILL reduce your long range vision even if it's not uncomfortably bright up close, and that's why GOOD high beams don't add light on the road right in front of your car-- they shine it all way down the road instead). Y'all should look up Daniel Stearn's lighting website. He's got tons of very well-researched information about automotive lighting and the science behind it, even if he does come across as an anti-aftermarket HID/LED snob. You can learn a lot from his work from over the years.

How a bulb, whatever type, produces light and how the human eye perceives that light.It should also be remembered that blinding other drivers doesn't just make you 'that guy' as noted in the clip, it's a ticketed offense in all States and full justification for a traffic stop.

+babybirdhome very well, sir. Everything was said. Maybe just point out, that mentioned names (Hella, Cibie) is not only ones, and not available worldwide - maybe except Hella, but here in middle of europe, those bulbs are not so good. I can recomand Osram and Phillips. Of course, it is not about brand, it is about technology and quality - both bulbs and reflector+optics.

It's kelvin, not kelvin degrees =) halogen bulbs are not 4300K. They are closer to 3000K. Factory HID bulbs are 4300K. Not sure what you mean when you say that halogens give off the best output of light. They don't. HID bulbs put out several times more light than halogens. Manufacturers use halogens because they are several times less expensive.

One main issue you have here is the housing. The only bulb that is going to give you their best performance is the Halogen. That is because that particular housing (stock Mazda DOT) is designed for that bulb. If you replace the bulb, then the housing is not designed to reflect those other types of bulb/lights. Now, if you replace the entire housing, then you will get better results from the different typed of bulbs, because they are designed for them. I did not hear you say that you replaced the entire housing, just the types of bulbs.
@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 9 жыл бұрын
It absolutely does matter. If a HID or led bulb is placed inside the housing of a regular incandescent/halogen bulb, it will not perform as good as it will if it is placed inside a housing designed for those typed of bulbs. The reflectors and refractors are designed completely different for the different types of bulbs.

I definitely understand what you think is "no problem," however if you were to put the proper retro fit housing in there, you would actually get better performance. Yes, the light source is brighter than stock, but the reflectors are not the proper set up therefore giving you lower performance. Not only lower performance, but you are blinding everyone that you are facing.

Nice to see people on youtube not making biased assumptions or just comparing by what they read on the box, and seemingly doing some research! Have been doing a lot of research on putting LEDs in my car and wanted to find a good real world comparison. I was expecting to have to watch several vids to find some one that knew what they were talking about, but found this on the first try! Thanks for info, will def look into other videos!(sticking to HID for lows, and going LED for high so I can use flash-to-pass)

I've personally have never had a ballast go bad on me. The ones on my speed are 5 years old. The only thing to go bad was one of the bulbs but that was due to water getting in the housing. My other car (Mazda 3) still has the factory bulbs and ballast, and after 8 years they still work great. What brand of HID's are you using?

i have tried all kinds of different brands and they never last more than a year. right now i have ballasts from DDM tuning in my 02 maxima. 02 and newer maxima all come with factory HID. next time i have a ballast or bulb issue Im going with LED now that i can find them in D2R size.... i have never had problems with bulbs just ballasts. i even see color variances with HID once ballasts age... LED are better for motorcycles since they don't need a ballast.....

U must be insane...... Noway is a halogen close to being as bright as an hid. There's a reason luxury car makers use them & also why they're more expensive. Simple physics from the color table. 4300K is the highest output. Halogens are only 2700K. Only have glare if u use cheap shit
@Milosz_Ostrow
@Milosz_Ostrow 9 жыл бұрын
Dirk Alleyne - You're talking color temperature, which has nothing to do with luminosity, usually expressed in lumens. It's comparing apples and oranges. Please, we've never met and you have no idea what my technical background is, so calling me "insane" is entirely uncalled-for.
@dirkalleyne3580
@dirkalleyne3580 9 жыл бұрын
+Milosz Ostrow Ok...... U throw out a technical term as if to educate me. I have a degree in electrical engineering & I'm very aware of the difference u brought up which actually further proves me correct. Fact: 4300K HIDs produce 3000 lumens and 90 McD/m2. Hologen headlight produce about 1400 lumens and 30 mcd/m2. So now u have apples to apples & oranges to oranges. So ....instead of feeling insulted (which wasn't my intention) how about soaking in some knowledge a recognizing that some people actually know what they're talking about as well & the insane comment was nothing more than an opinion & being silly. I don't speak unless I know what the hell I'm talking about. Halogens are only used coz they are a lot cheaper.
@Milosz_Ostrow
@Milosz_Ostrow 9 жыл бұрын
Dirk Alleyne A Wi-Fi signal from a cheap home router, using the built-in antenna, will cover a radius of perhaps 50 feet; maybe up to 100 feet if it is in an open space with no obstructions. Replace that antenna with an external parabolic dish and the signal will reach at least a mile, possibly up to 10 miles line-of-sight. So it is with halogen vs. HID headlamps. When I'm driving on a highway at night, I'm mostly interested in what is directly ahead of the vehicle. Halogens provide a focused beam that puts those lumens where they're needed. I don't care what's going on in the pasture 45 degrees off my course, because I'm not planning to drive in that pasture anyway. Those HID lamps with their lack of good focus also cause tremendous glare for oncoming motorists and actually _reduce_ safety for all concerned.

There is a law about it but I have never heard of any cop ever enforcing it. The DOT rules clearly state the you cannot put a HID or LED into a housing that is not DOT approved for those bulbs. But it is easy to make these older headlight housings compliant. I do it all the time. @JG Car Cleaning First let me be clear you cannot "adjust the housings" to make them compliant. I said that you have to 'make' the housing compliant by installing proper parts into them. Now you can make adjustments to the aiming of the headlights to make them better so as not to blind oncoming drivers. You cannot adjust them with the same systems as used for halogen lights. You must use something like the Hella SEG700L and adjust for HID configurations not halogen. But few shops, even dealers have this tool and you will be lucky to find someone that fully understands this unit to use it properly here in the states. When I was a mechanic I was master guilded with Porsche and I was a master technical specialist with Audi. Being certified with this tool was mandatory to attain these positions. But again this will not make them compliant with the law, it will only make them less hazardous to oncoming drivers. Now you can make them compliant. The simplest is to install the proper projector array into the housing. I said easy and I should have said simple although it requires labor and time. You can buy projector housings that are designed to go into existing headlamp housings. I like the 1.5" H4 ones for the simplest installs. These will fit through the H4 opening and lock into place in the tabs. The ones I have used have the hi/low plate in them and do not depend upon any reflector for proper illumination. But if your housing is large enough you can install up to 90mm projector heads in the housings. This is the one that requires labor and time on your part. Its not hard just laborious. With the 90mm ones you can get Angle Eyes (halos) and/or Devil Eyes in them for varied custom looks. I have installed dual 90mm projectors in my sons 1929 Mercedes SSK and they look great and comply with the law. I am building a set of headlights for my sons 1987 Pontiac Fiero with quad 1.5" projectors in a custom made housing that will be fully compliant.

You mentioned the right housing is important. Are you speaking of the headlamp assembly/ lense encasement or projector? How do I know if I have the right housing? Some suggest that putting hid bulbs in place of halogen (in stock headlamps) is a bad idea because of glare, dispersion of light, etc. I don't have the time or $ for huge modifications...just wanting to upgrade where I can afford. I was looking at a plug'n play hid kit that comes with the bulbs, wiring, & ballasts. I'll have to double check to make sure the wiring includes a relay.

Stephen Perry true. However I still don't understand why most states/provinces prohibit the use of 3000k bulbs. I have experienced driving with 3000k lowbeams and their perfect (back in my native country) . That's why I have 3k bulb for my high beam so when there's intense fog or snow, I can see everything :)

@BucketWheat 9 жыл бұрын
VR46champion Most 'set-ups' for HiD single-bulb headlights have a sort of 'baffle' or blinder, that deflects some of the brightness and 'cuts off' the top portion of the projection range. So the SAME bulb is providing both ranges of light. [otherwise, you would have a 'time delay' for each bulb to heat up again.] If you have a dual bulb arrangement, the low beam may remain on as the high beam "adds to it" with additional light and coverage. (Very common in older cars with the factory halogen lights.)

For your tests between bulbs. When switching from Halogen to HID did you install the proper HID Projector lenses with the bulbs or just did a straight bulb swap? If these tests were just straight bulb swapping then they are invalid as you used a Halogen reflector to control how the light is "thrown" from the vehicle.

you need to be very careful when discussing deg K. headlights are based on the colour temp of the sun, this is rated at daylight which is 5000K, anything over 5000k is illegal in most countries because the glare above 5000k is blinding, you have eluded that Deg K is just a reflection of the light color, this is true in one sense but manufacturers are bound by complying with Daylight Balance, this is why Halogen and 4500K has been the standard requirement by complancing throughout the world. So any color temp over 5000k is bad for the human eye, fact.

daeshik cho only if the owner installed a HID bulb into a halogen headlight assembly (pretty ghetto IMO). Likewise, if the headlight adjustment is not adjusted correctly, any light can blind you. If you get a HID or LED light from the manufacturer when purchasing a car, it will not blind you AT ALL, just badass light pattern that will turn night into day. Modern cars also have self-leveler that will adjust the headlight beam depending on the amount of weight your car is carrying.

I appreciate that you let people know that they should not use LED and HID in reflector bowls. Yes you can use HID and LED in a halogen projector but you can get a lot of better output if you are using a correctly designed projector bowl for the type of bulb you are using. I admit I was one of the people that put a hid in a reflector bowl but once I read up on how to correctly retrofit my car I made sure to do it correctly. It did cost more but I am very happy with the output.

Just wanted to point out that not all LED kits are equal, so the kits she was using in her video are old/cheap kits that in fact DO have poor light output.. and scatter light as she said. Unfortunately most people that "upgrade" to HID or LED put them into headlights made for Halogen bulbs, they don't give a damn about how much glare they produce and most police don't even bother ticketing them because it's a fix-it ticket and no fine so you have all these rude drivers out there. Really pisses me off. Yeah I'm talking to you jackass. If you want brighter lights do it right or don't do it at all. BTW, those type of LED (bulbs) are a joke. I think leds need to be below 100 C ( compared to halogen and hid that operates at 2800 C and 2200C). So even though leds are warmer on the outside, they are actually a lot cooler than halogen and hid...

Eh, this video is so old that it's outdated. LED's have come a looong way. Even within the past 6 months. They rival or are better than HID's at this point. I also suspect she installed the LED lights in the opposite orientation. The way she held it up at 12 and 6 @2:36 when she was explaining the light output on the LED's makes me think this. The light is supposed to shine at 3 and 9. This makes the beam much much wider and even. I'd find a comparison that was created within the past few months. Also, she is dead wrong about never using them in reflector lights. You can get a perfect cutoff line as long as the diodes are at the same height as the original bulb's filament and installed at the right orientation.

C Muir I noticed that as well, since my biggest interest is DISTANCE with a 'standard' light set-up. [Motorcycles and sports cars...not 4x4 hunting vehicles!] I think most of that can be related to the shape of the reflector, as she mentioned when talking about glare. The Factory's design of their reflector is out of our control...unless WE want to design one of our own! *Good Luck with that...unless you have some pretty sophisticated equipment and skills..* (-;

Nice review. Thank you. Another thing to mention with LEDs is the rear section of the bulbs are very bulky. A lot of headlight housings have limited space behind the rear cover, thus not allowing big bulky bulbs to be used. HIDs are OK as the bulk is in the ballast, which is separate from the normal size bulb. One must check clearance before buying a kit.

I have compared LED vs my stock HID's on my Altima. Even though you say in the video that LED's light output is less than the HID, I find that LED's have equal light output on my Altima to my stock HID's with less glare. People used to flash me with my HID's but since I installed the LED kit, no more flashing! With that being said, I think it depends on the actual vehicle/headlight assembly itself whether or not the LED's are as bright as the HID's.
