The difference between you and the other instructional videos is that you're a good teacher. Too many instructional videos are from people who know the process so well they can't put themselves in the shoes of a person trying it for the first time, and so they leave out details. You hit every detail and I love it! Keep it up, Chris.

5 years ago this was posted, your still going strong and inspiring many. I'm only 14, and I am way into mechanics because of u, I have watched almost all your videos, and today I actually thought I would attempt a DIY. I wanted to paint the rims on my 97 ranger(almost the exact same as your b3000) but, I wanted to test my skills before I scuffed something up. So I got a steelie from a junk yard, and followed these exact steps, I was only able to get up to the 3 coats of primer due to a thunderstorm. But it still came out great so far. I will continue tommorow, but I just wanted to let you know, you inspired me a lot due to these videos, and I want you to keep continuing stuff such as this going. Great work Chris.

Yeah oil changes can be scary the first time just because you're going in kinda blind, but they're actually extremely easy. Thank you for the motivation to refinish my wheels! I had some lessons learned: 1. After spending 30 min cleaning a wheel with grinder and not making much progress, I went to a local dustless blaster- $50 and 5 min later the outside of my wheels were cleaner than I could have ever done! 2. It's important to pick heavy stock index cards--mine were too light and were difficult to push into the wheel bead not even considering the wind. 3. I chose Rustoleum Automotive sandable primer--there were a lot of solids I needed to sand and would not recommend it. 4. The time spent on this project was more like 12 hours than 2!

I was a fine finish/spray painter at Disneyland from 1985 until I retired in 2011, and although I've only resorted to the use of spray cans a few times when it was more convenient to not drag out my spray equipment at home, it was a pleasure to see the time and expertise you took to properly prep and then clean the rim with alcohol prior to priming and painting it, the only other thing I would have done would have been to refinish the other side of the wheel, and then clear coat both sides with high gloss Krylon. Overall, a nice video and good craftsmanship which you can be proud to show off.

+AngelofDeath3000, some people buy cars for different attributes than you do. We don't all need manhood augmentation so much. Some of us enjoy reliability, low repair costs and fuel economy. Toyotas are good at all three of those things. They are not as good for manhood augmentation or the thrill of high acceleration and handling. They look boring and are average performance. We value what fulfills our desires. I and many others just want cheap, reliable transportation.

First off, love your videos, I just finished a complete brake job on my old 2000 Taurus ses because of your brake video. Now, I was a Painter years ago, and I noticed something that would have helped your wheel look even better. After you finish primering, lightly sand with, say, 400? Grit. Wash, dry, then paint. You see, Primer, when you spray it, if you were able to look at it under a microscope from the side view, would have points sticking up. Go over it very lightly with sandpaper to just knock the points off, and your paint layer will be MUCH shinier. Without sanding, the points stick through the paint layer leaving a duller finish. Try it and compare. Thanks again for the great videos! Rabbit OUT!

You make everything feel so comfortable. Note that I didn't say easy - anyone competent can make their craft look easy. But you make is seem approachable. I've done multiple projects with your tutorials and they've all turned out great. I think I riffed off some of your previous videos when I decided to correct my paint and redo a huge section where all the clear coat and some of the actual paint had come off the A pillar all the way back to the trunk of the car. I did these prep steps and then wet sanded and cut compounded the glossy Rustoleum you used here, and it turned out great! The shine was nice and didn't require me to spend money on five cans of clear coat. And you're right about the paint; one can of Rustoleum replaced five of those shitty dollar cans and the dollar cans never looked right no matter how much I sanded or how many coats! The Rustoleum was so easy and so good for being so cheap. Thanks for doing what you do.

+ExaltedDuck I am a safety glasses all the time kind of guy, and I hate face shields...but, whenever I'm using either a wire wheel or a thin cutting wheel(not grinding wheels, just thin cutting ones) I always wear a face shield. One thing I've had personally happen is a stray wire pierced my nose, super not fun. The proof I was doing the right thing came when a few years ago a friend had a cutting wheel come apart on him and a chunk of the disc cut into his neck! The blood he left as a reminder on his shop's floor was horrific to see the next day when I came to check him out with his 7 stitches. Of course, to drive the point home his Dr. said if it had been 2 inches to the left(I think?), it would have cut into his jugular vein and he would have died. From a friggen 4" grinder, now that would be beyond embarrassing! Just a heads up, I'm totally not a safety spaz, I just know enough to respect the power of my tools. I'm certainly not harping away on anyone either, but if it saves one person's face(or life!), then I have been a good human and maybe the aliens will bring me to their shop to wrench on flying saucers ;) Aloha...Chuck

ijustinw Any auto parts store or hardware store will have some. The simple $2-3 polycarbonate ones are fine as long as they're z87 rated. I wear safety glasses 40+ hours a week, and warped lenses really bother me so I got some nice ones by smith optics. I have a set at work, a set in my range bag, and the tinted sunglasses version for driving... I figured having the same set as sunglasses would help me secure the habit of always having them on in the lab at work.

Thanks for the nice, patient-step-by-step video! A few questions though: - Not removing the balance lead and the tire off the rim were just to lower the costs? The car could have worked in the mean time with the spare tire - How durable is this work? - Is this only for summer tires? I am thinking that winter rims are hit much harder with salt and debris
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
+Andrei Rînea Not removing the wheel weight is for costs. At $15 a wheel to balance it, I figured since it has new tires, it wont need weights for 5 years or so which should be how long this paint lasts (at least if you do a good job like this). This is for any tires, summer or winter. This police car will be used all year round in the toughest conditions.

I've always found that it is advisable to treat rusted areas with some sort of acid based rust converter, like jenolite, wash it off then apply a zinc based primer when it comes to painting over rusty spots, otherwise they rust through again. No matter how much sanding you did.
@patagualianmostly7437
@patagualianmostly7437 8 жыл бұрын
I think there is something in what you say: There is moisture trapped within the rusted metal that is totally un-dectable by the human eye..... And it will re-surface....despite the best barriers. Think it through: If they started to rust....it is because the moisture was there when the wheel (or whatever) was originally made....it was there when the item was originally painted..under stringently controlled conditions..... a DIY repair is temporary at best.
@Realm-of-Horror
@Realm-of-Horror 8 жыл бұрын
You also get rust because of paint chips, scuffs etc, allowing moisture to get into the metal. When painting over rust on panels, in addition to treating and zinc primer, keeping the top coat waxed has been a very effective way of keeping the rust back as it's another barrier against outside moisture.

Keep in mind if you don't have a car a lot of information here is useful on nearly anything with an engine from a lawnmower, weed wacker or a motorcycle. For instance the information in this video literally applies to any and all spray painting out of a rattle can. However it is not the same with a professional spray gun.

Thank you, Chris! This is a wonderful idea! I have very cheap plastic rims on my little Toyota Yaris and time to remove them and paint up the wheels. Great paint type you used! Some tips for others: Wear goggles (Harbor Freight $2) AND an apron, short sleeves, shorts. Apron should cover you up. Those wires are going to fly off in all directions and stick in your clothes. They will poke you for weeks!!! Laundry does not get them off and good luck finding them with fingers! You do not want this in your clothes. Harbor Freight sells wire cup brushes for $5 each. They are 4"- 4.5" and will fit a 5" grinder. The thinner one is called a Crimped Wire Cup Brush. Heavier one is called a Knotted Wire Cup Brush. Excellent both. Do not buy a Wire Wheel for Grinder! It is not easy to control. Add a metal washer between the cup brush and disc of your grinder. If you don't, it is very hard to take off later as it is too tight and distance too narrow for most wrenches except the Knipex brand. Small wire wheels and brushes are available for Dremel tools at Harbor Freight as well - great value. Amazon sells Dremel bits. The bit that removes scratches off metal jewelry is a silicone rubber grinding bit in different grits. Think of rubberized sandpaper. I use 150 grit for jewelry then buff it finely. Might work for fine scratches without being aggressive. For very aggressive sanding, you can use Flapdiscs on grinder. This will remove lumps on metal, whereas wire brushes mostly polish metal. Loctite Rust Neutralizer - spray on bare metal. It bonds any rust remaining to the metal and this goes on first. Then primer, then paint. Amazon has tiny tents for spray painting. No matter how far you are from other cars, the overspray will land on them. Yikes! So use these $25 tents that are very handy for sandblasting, spray painting, and fold up to the size of a car windshield cover.

If you know someone who is a roofer, get a piece of flashing from them to keep paint off the tire. To calculate how much flashing you need, multiply your rim size (17", 18", etc.) by 3.14 and then add about 4" for overlap, so you get a cone shape.

That's a little exaggeration. I live in PR where we have higher temps and humidity than in FL and I have painted stuff with spray cans in the outside without any problems, even in rainy days. We have a good advantage over colder climates: sun and the high temps which help paint dry fast, in a few hours and with good sun you can put a lot of coats over the wheels. Get a can of Rust-Oleum paint for metal and use that instead of the one shown in the video. That thing adheres really good even without primer and dries very fast.

Dude being that I own a cleaning business and cleaning is my forte. Your videos are just Da-bomb. Last night and sitting here thinking about I want to put some clear coat lacquer on my wife's rims but I don't want to deal with overspray. Contemplating ideas. 🤔Watched her video. Problem solved!!! 😀👍 Dude you are just awesome. Love people like you!!!

I did this to one wheel. Despite liking the end result, I soon realized I had to repeat the process at least three more times. So I killed myself. The Force resurrected me to send this message to you all.

To make this process faster, get 2 jack stands put them under the front and lift the rear with the jack and take all the wheels off. Then when you get to the spray part you can spray paint other tires while you wait for some of them to dry. The waiting part is the most boring and time consuming part
