@George Duffy you mistake self- indulgence for what was expected by the audiences of that time: extended great guitar solos, charismatic frontmen, heavy drums and bass. Zeppelin hit at the perfect time for a guitar driven hard rock band. If Zeppelin was self indulgent, then so was Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, The Who and allot of others.I don’t think any of them were: they played for the youth of the time, and that’s what we wanted.

Great reaction... as for Jimmy Page's guitar playing, many of his live playing was improvised on the spot within the main 'structure of the songs. The best way to describe Page is "I'm not quite sure what he just did but I wouldn't be surprised if that guitar is pregnant now."

This was BEFORE autotune, so when you saw a band, it was THEM alone. They either had talent or they didn’t. There used to be a saying, “If you can’t play it LIVE, then you can’t play it at all”. Editing a song in a studio doesn’t count. Led Zeppelin concerts cemented them as the GOAT.

@zosomoso
@zosomoso 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikeB12800 pre ‘75 Page was flawless live. Though the ‘slop’ was always there because he had that shoot from the hip approach to playing unlike most of his contemporaries who were more risk averse when improvising. I think he was the only player to truly understand Hendrix’s approach in that regard. They were the two biggest risk takers and you hear mistakes in their playing everywhere. But with high risk there’s high reward and for every patch of crabgrass you’d get a garden of roses. But I agree the fretting finger injuries and heroin/alcohol abuse did not help him from ‘75 onward.

@@zosomoso a lot of people were improvising live back then. Robbie Kreiger, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour. Sure I’m missing a lot
@zosomoso
@zosomoso 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikeB12800 Oh for sure absolutely, I’m not saying nobody else improvised. But most of the time you’re hearing pentatonic scales hence what I mean by “safe” improv (nothing wrong with that!). The margin of error is narrow with pentatonics but you hit a glass ceiling for shape and color. In contrast Page was experimenting with blending modal and eastern scales in alternate tunings while improvising onstage which gives you a much higher margin of error. I’m not saying that’s better than sticking to pentatonics, just that there are benefits to Page’s approach which I’ve grown to appreciate. Clapton, Gilmour, and Krieger are all incredible in their own regard, I’m a huge fan of all of them. Terry Kath is another improv player that I’ve really come to love lately.

I think the studio version should be the first Stairway listen. This version was the gateway drug into Led Zeppelin for millions of us. Basically everyone under 50 years old. So clean, so melodic, the slow, epic build like you're climbing Everest without even knowing it and then boom! Mountaintop! And the solo! Iconic! We ALL know EVERY SINGLE NOTE and it still melts faces, EVERY time. The live MSG version is amazing, no doubt, but the studio version will make you appreciate it all the more. Love watching a brand new Led Zeppelin experience. This is what hit me at 11 yrs old in 69'. This band was so different and powerful and bluesy and raw ..they BLEW AWAY EVERYBODY IN ROCK N ROLL BACK THEN. Bands like the Rolling Stones Black Sabbath Deep Purple Cream....looked tame next to these four Grandmasters of music. Each player here has No Equal. Greatest Drummer of all time ..no one will ever catch him....John Henry Bonham...Greatest Bass / Keyboard artist John Paul Jones.....he can play anything...any guitar . Banjo ..acoustic guitar...Mandolin....piano...electric organ....ANYTHING ...he plays. He's beyond magical ....these guys were four WIZARDS. Then the singer...who plays a mean HARMONICA......has a voice you can't even describe. Almost a man/ woman voice. He has a range you just don't hear anyplace else. He's 74 and still sounds this good. Then there's the Grand WIZARD...lead guitarist 🎸🎸🎸🎸...band creator.....Song and Music writer composer producer .GENIUS...JIMMY PAGE. WHOS BETTER ON GUITAR THAN HIM ???? ENJOY. YOU GOT ALOT TO CATCH UP ON. TRY 1970 ROYAL ALBERT HALL ..HOW MANY MORE TIMES. 24 MINUTES LONG.

@sicotshit7068 not so sure about that. They tried to record some songs they had together with John before he died, but they couldn't find another drummer that could come close to John, so they tabled them. They even tried to record those songs with Jason, but couldn't get the sound.

My young sister now you can understand why a lot of us have been mainlining LZ for all these years. For me personally over 50 years These guys were and still are an absolutely astounding band. When you listen again, and I know you will now, try and peel back the layers of the music and hear the mastery each member had of their art. Where to start, John Paul Jones is one of the greatest musicians in rock. Keyboards, mandolin, bass guitar, to mention a few instruments, he was simply magic. Then what about John "Bonzo" Bonham, what an amazing drummer. Helped create, along with Jones, the platform that Jimmy Page could play his soaring guitar solos on. Jimmy was the counterpoint to Robert Plant. He and Paige would do call and answer on numerous LZ songs, including this one, listen close at around 4:50. Robert Plant is without a doubt the finest vocalist rock has ever heard. Thank you for your reaction to this cut, you just might have introduced a whole new group of young people to The Mighty Led Zeppelin. Be well and safe, peace to you and yours.

Zepellin are the G.O.A.T., & no band comes close, & that,s because it had to be these 4 musicians, who were brilliant in their own field. None of them could be replaced, that,s y they knew that they had to quit when Bonham died. There is just no band like Zepellin, they blow every band away, they set the benchmark/standard for playing live. Its as if the stars were aligned, also the fact that they nearly did not happen at all. R. I. P. John Bonham.
