Bonham's drumming and his contribution to the band cannot be overstated. When Bonham died in 1980, the surviving members just knew that Led Zeppelin would never be the same, so they called it a day and disbanded. Bonzo was the hammer of the gods, and I like to think that whenever I hear thunder, it's just Bonham clearing the dust from his drumming kit. RIP Bonzo.

Yea,, like starting a train. A huge advantage ,that page exploited, and leaned on heavily. And doubt JPJ,was any less valuable. I actually see them as the real band. With page being a much smaller talent than he has always been called. And plant being a singer, who really only pulled off the upper range screams for a VERY short period of time. Ive heard plant sing different versions of every song ,in order to take it easy on his voice.

One New Years Eve my best friend did something really stupid & if his mom & sister hadn't heard him crash into his nightstand he would've pulled a John Bonham himself. We'd been out drinking all night & made a last stop @ a house party where these guys were freshman in h.s. when we were seniors & juniors. For some retarded reason, he decided to pour around 8 ounces of rum into a glass & chug it in front of these guys w/o me knowing it. When I dropped him off @ his house, he tried going in & flopping down on his bed, he missed & cracked his head on nightstand & ended up on th floor. His mom & sister had to hold his head up & over a container for him to puke in all morning! I doubt if he'd be around today if his sister was a real, sound sleeper...scary.

The name of the song is actually a reference to the reggae sound. I've never heard anyone (even professional radio DJ's) pronounce this song's name properly in the 50 years that it has existed. D'yer Mak'er is a play on the country name "Jamaica" as pronounced by someone with a heavy English accent. (They're English, after all) D'yer Mak'er = Jamaica = Reggae.

The pronunciation is a pun on the name of the island nation of "Jamaica." You pronounce the D'yer like "jer" and the Mak'er like "maker" -- so the correct way to say it is "jer-maker." It's been tripping up rock and roll DJs for 50 years, and I think it's hilarious. Brad, your comment about the "island vibe" is on point. This song was Led Zeppelin's one (and I think only) foray into a song inspired by reggae. They have the song "Fool in the Rain" (I can't recall if you have reacted to that one or not) which is inspired by calypso, and also has a kind of tropical vibe to it.

This song received some airplay on the radio. It may have even charted. I never followed the Top 40 back then. The entire "Houses of the Holy" album is great. But it was always in the shadow of the previous release, usually called Led Zeppelin IV and the next, Physical Grafitti. But it is one of my favorite albums. "Over The Hills and Far Away" is another song from this album that received airplay. Great song. If it wasn't for Stairway to Heaven, from Led Zep IV, it might have been recognized more widely for its composition and complexity. Bonham's drums definitely drove this song, though.

I was waiting for this. Btw, it’s pronounced, “jer maker,” as in Jamaica. Because it’s using a ska/rockabilly rhythm style.

You guys are right, this really is a showcase for Bonzo, in many respects. This was a huge radio hit for them. Love the reggae cadence with the piano coming in on the two and the four. Try In My Time of Dying for John Bonham's premier showcase, or even Fool in the Rain. Cheers!

I was pretty young when I first heard this on the radio and thought, "Wow, never heard nothing like this. Got to find out who this is." A while later I had the same reaction to a song called "Whole Lotta Love." Around that time same reaction to "Immigrant Song." When I found they were all LZ, I was forever hooked and never let anyone claim they aren't the best rock band ever. By the way, the DJ called this song "Dyer Maker (die-er make-er)" like it looks, also like Brad pronounced it I think. Don't let anyone tell you different.

D'yer Mak'er (intended to be pronounced with a British non-rhotic accent as "jah-may-kah") is a song by Led Zeppelin, from their 1973 album Houses of the Holy. The name of the song is derived from Jamaica and is a play on words based on the joke, "My wife's on vacation in the West Indies." "Jamaica?" "No, it was her idea." The title was chosen because it reflects the reggae flavor of the song. Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant has said that he finds it amusing when American fans pronounce the title as "Dyer Maker."

It's pronounced "Jer-maker". Nobody back in the day knew how to pronounce it either. The basis of it is a British slang phrase "Did ya make her?", meaning did you "score", "hook up", "get down", "get it on"... you get the picture. 🤔 Many Brits pronounced that phrase "Jer-maker"... which is also how many Brits pronounce Jamaica... which connects with the Reggae roots of the song. Love it! 🤘😎🎱

Totally a reggae beat. Y'alll nailed it. D'yer Mak'er (aka Heartbreak on the beach - my alternate title for it) after he read the "Dear John" letter she sent him. Have some rum, man and forget all your troubles.

This is definitely one of Bonham's coolest beats, he totally carries the song, followed by Robert Plant's vocals. He had an amazing ability to mesh his beats with the guitar. They were smart to call it quits after his death as there was no replacing him, and they obviously knew that. Trying that would've been a disaster. RIP BONZO
