We're back with Juan Dies and more coverage of their cover of Led Zeppelin's "Four Sticks." For the recorded version, Juan and his bandmates in Sones de Mexico employed a slew of traditional percussion instruments including most notably, a donkey jawbone with loose teeth.
They also used a number of wind instruments including an ocarina, employing stairwell recording techniques and delay adding to the microphone signal.

Thank you very much for helping me find the sound of the donkey jaw, I have been looking for that sound for many years by just hearing it and didn't know what it was.

I am glad that you showed the Quijada de Burro, please do not forget that it is a Peruvian instrument, as much as the Cajon, and the Cajita! thank you and keep up the good work.

The Quijada de Burro is more accurately stated as an Afro-Peruvian instrument, being introduced by the Africans brought to the Americas during colonial times. It's the same with the Cajon and Cajita.

I disagree, these instruments developed in Peru, by Afro Peruvians, Africans or Peruvians of African descent. The cajon and cajita developed in Peru as well.

Still, since you are producing an educational video, you should credit the origin of each instrument to complete the educational experience.

The instruments did indeed develop in Peru but from the African slaves that were brought as they were banned from playing drums which were integral to their music and religious ceremonies as well as sending messages such as signaling the start of a revolt, including the revolution in Haiti which led to its independence. They then used whatever was at hand to replicate the drums, the most abundant being the shipping crates used for cod which also doubled as seating. I'm only saying that to claim these instruments as Peruvian is a misnomer at best.

I always wondered what that shaking, rattling percussive sound was. Until one day in a musical instrument store I saw "quijada" on a vintage Roland TR drum machine. Years later I heard a vibra-slap in a school band and asked what it was. Interesting that quijada (jaw) the full name of the instrument is quijada de burro (donkey jaw) makes that legendary awesome percussive sound and heavily used in almost any genre of music
