It was 1976. We were like 18. We Got the new Zep Live album. 'Song Remains'.1973 concert. Back then there was no live stuff from them, or videos, or You Tube. I put on 'Stairway' and the solo. And I said. I knew Jimmy was even better than I ever imagined. I just knew it. The movie finally came out in like 1979 and I watched Jimmy do that solo. The way he held that guitar. Ripping out, I couldn't figure out what it was. Like jazz or horn riffs with blues. So confident and killer the way he played that in the movie. For all the world to see. The fuckin thing was captured live. Un fuckin real. And this proved it. We got o see the 1977 tour at MSG in NY. The record store charged us $50 for $9.99 ticket. That was a fuckin' fortune back then for 18 yr old kids right out of high school spending most of our money on weed and records and shit. We spent every cent we could get for those tickets and had to go to the show straight. No party stuff. First time ever with nothing to get high on for a concert. WTF We got good seats because all the shows for the week got sold out in 15 minuites and we were screwed. They added a Saturday show and we got them. Good seats. I went right up front dead in front of Jimmy and couldn't beleive my eyes and ears. The fuckers played from 9pm to 12 thirty. 3 1/2 hours non stop. The fuckin encore was 45 miniutes. I had to go to the bathroom so bad but I didn't want to leave my seat. But I did for 'No Quarter' I had no choice. Fast forward to the next 4 decades, We've been telling young guitar player kids to hang up this Eddie Van Halen school of flash guitar playing and listen to Jimmy Page, and pull up The 'Staiway' song from the movie. and look at Jimmy. Learn from this guy. Nobody before or since ever played like Jimmy, especially live. I play a little guitar but no ones ever gonna play like Jimmy. Listen to Jimmy Page and the people he learned from. It's all about the blues kids. Blues on steroids. frankny66yroldwhitekid rockfan PS Every official and bootleg version of Jimmy playing live 'Stairway' kicks fuckin' ass. They're all different but so fuckin' good.

I finally see what Jimmy's doing. Instead of repeating the same style of solo for 'Stairway', year after year, show after show, hes' playing through different parts of the rhythm groove each time for the sake of risk and adventure, and cool. And because he can, with his talent and prowess on the guitar. And to challenge himself and his fans for new and uncharted territory. It's not about better or worse, Or faster or slower. Why do the same solo over and over again?

Jeni ChP Understand this, back in the 70's the record companies weren't as stingent. Led Zeppelin WAS SO POPULAR that Atlantic Records basically said, "You keep all the money from the lives shows and we'll also give you royalties from the profits." So Page during the live shows was sloppy as hell and is known for it. Back then it was cool flailing your fingers around.

Funny how Jimmy is so badass while playing but when he puts the guitar down he is very humble and bit timid. As you can see at the end of this song. And in many interviews he had the habit of touching his nose and a little stutter. Seemed more confident as he got much older.

Destiny. Every time I watch them play together they leave me speechless. The August 4, 1979 concert was an incredible performance. The August 11, 1979 concert no so much. But the second show was hindered by Jimmy's parents splitting us, his drug use, and bad press in the British papers that ripped and incredible August 4, 1979 show. The press was obviously wrong.
