It's interesting to note that while the first LED tubes did use a connection to each end, they later switched to feeding the power from one end due to the number of shocks received by people replacing tubes while powered. Traditional tubes didn't generally conduct from one end to the other until the gas had been ionised. To allow for the existing wiring they sometimes used a PTC self resetting fuse bridging the pins at one end and a starter that had a link in it so that the existing circuit with bypassed ballast would ultimately feed live and neutral to one end. Other tubes require the fitting to be wired with live and neutral at one end and will only work one way round.

LED retrofit tubes that use a connections at both ends have been illegal to supply in most countries for a long time. Regulators claim this is for safety, however it's almost impossible for any danger to actually occur in real life. To be zapped you have to have the power switched on, be standing on a metal ladder, then fit only one end of the tube (leaving the other end dangling). Next you must rotate the tube 90° to lock it in, then reach along to the far end of the tube and touch the exposed pins of the non-inserted end of the tube whilst not knocking out the connected end's pins. After all that, you still only have a 50% chance that your initial connection was to the Active (Line/Live) of the mains. - There is FAR HIGHER danger from a standard ES or BC lampholder, for example in a table lamp, since that carries a 100% chance of shock from touching the connections. A retrofit LED Tube DOES NOT require any rewiring nor ballast removal for standard "switch start" fixtures used in most countries (an American rapid start, instant start or any electronic ballast fixture will need rewiring). Where the LED Tube has connections at either end, the circuit works after removal of the old starter (leaving it open circuit). Where the LED Tube has connections at ONE end, the starter is replaced with a "LED starter" that is actually a fuse. The old (magnetic) fluorescent ballast can safely be left in-circuit, and there are no significant losses or voltage drop across the windings. That's because of the reduced power drawn by the LED tube, which prevents the ballast doing it's "inductive stuff" like in the old fluorescent circuit. I've extensively tested such retrofit tubes during product development, and the maximum loss from a 36/40W ballast and

An interesting use for LEDs is being done by radio hams. Focusing 3watt red LEDs into a beam , modulating it with audio and using it for communication. I believe the record at the moment is 120km from hilltops, using visible red light. (My record is the length of my garden, as I've not taken it out any further.)
@So1ipse
@So1ipse 3 жыл бұрын
I don't know how they compare for output powers but I'd have thought the one to tinker with would be infrared, possibly in combination with the visible for aiming purposes. That way you'd be immune to a lot of the atmospheric losses. I'd imagine you'd be well supplied with variations WRT detection devices too, very developmentally mature component function. Then, if I had a similarly overgrown playmate and was still based in Snowdonia U would be wondering about IR laser diodes.. I mean if you're going to investigate technical possibility then surely the interest value grows as you home in on peak potential.. If you ignore my mischevious (yes half century teenager) desire to graduate to laser diodes then IR light is the obvious maximum efficiency WRT cost versus potential performance.
@gonzo_the_great1675
@gonzo_the_great1675 3 жыл бұрын
@@So1ipse There has been some experimemtation with IR and also UV (which works on cloud scatter during the day). I suspect that using visible red just simplifies things in terms of aiming, LED availability, focusing etc. (Lenses having different focal lengths at IR than visible). But they certainly found that the interference/fading from sciltilation meant that coherant light was quite poor in practice. Non-coherant was better.

For soldering surface mount LEDs, try adding the solder to the copper by itself first of all. You can then melt the solder already on the copper with the soldering iron in one hand, and push the LED in with tweezers in the other hand. Might make it easier! Those Wago Lever-Nuts Mr Hunkin used at 29:59 are fantastic. They replace wire nuts/maurettes/choco blocks, and they're way faster to install, but more importantly they don't twist or damage the wires. If you're ever doing any house wiring, I recommend them. Pros probably don't use them because they're so much more expensive, but for DIY use here-and-there they are definitely worth it.

I've been a Tim Hunkin fan ever since the Secret Life series was first broadcast, so I've been binge watching these new videos! The correct way to work out the resistor value is subtract the LEDs forward voltage (called Vf on the datasheet) from the supply voltage to calculate what voltage you need to drop across the resistor. Then divide this number by the rated current of the LED to give you the resistor value. So for an LED with a 3V forward voltage, being run off a 12V supply at 800mA, the resistor value will be (12 - 3) ÷ 0.8 = 11.25 ohms. To calculate the required power rating of the resistor, multiply the voltage across it by the current. So for this example it will be (12 - 3) x 0.8 = 7.2W.

8:37 Divorced couple machine!!! This guy man... very firm grasp on the reality of real life, which is jarring and uncomfortable to most people. Which is precisely why I think Tim Hunkin is an absolute legend. All the endless sexual innuendos in the animated sections of The Secret Life series, it's like... "This is what humans are like. So I reflect that unwaveringly in my art". Spot on, and timelessly necessary! The USA has Adam Savage, whom we love dearly. Scotland has Bigclive (and Scott Manley if you like rockets and/or physics). But England (or the UK, who cares, we're all on this group of islands) has Tim Hunkin :D (and the legendary Rex Garrod, whose skill in... everything... must have inspired generations of kids, who wanted to be that "person who does the cool demonstrationy stuff in the background". Like Neil from Periodic Videos. But less stony faced chemistry, and more mechanics. And Brum. The guy built BRUM.)

Mr. Hunkin. Today, somehow one of your video came into view and caught my eye. I am in my early 60’s and after growing up on a family farm in the upper Midwest in the states, I have been around machinery for ever. There are genes passed thru family as I was adopted but my maternal grandparents we mine. Grandpa had an electrical engineers degree in 1932. He bought me chemistry sets, mechanical crane set, even a train. Either way I found that studying a machine and it’s parts, at age 9, I was arc welding the disc that had broken a frame component. A go-cart came to the step-grandparents house at the bottom of the hill. They came during the summer when school was out from 80 miles away. It was parked in the machine shed. Knot in rope, flip the lever for choke & moved the spring clip away from the spark plug on top. If lucky, it would start on first pull. I drove it behind the 4 or 5 buildings to keep from trouble. I broke it. I don’t remember what but had to fix it as my cousins would be coming in 5 to 6 months, being older, would pound me into the ground. I found water in the float bowl, fixed it and 250 gallons of petrol was next to the diesel. I learned to fix and that’s what I did. Fast forward 50 some years, now I am watching you! I watched 100+ videos on LEDs, and you Mr. Hunkin, have covered “Ohm’s” law, power solving circle (P over I x E) and more. Everyone is using an thing call “Arduino”. I don’t understand it, tried learning but gave up quick. I didn’t know they could be so small. My god, you even touch on PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) with out people realizing the human eye can not catch all. Even a labscope fills in blank spots between sample, called “Inturpulation”. Congratulations! I love you & your channel. I started a private file to save your videos, so I can find them fast. I am building my own 54 year old Chevy truck, but with a fuel injected 5.3L from an 03 Tahoe my son wrecked beyond repair hitting winter Ice. I find my self addicted to you wisdom, discussion, annunciation with a pleasant voice. I am hooked! Best of luck and my the lord keep you safe for a hundred fifty plus years! DK, Omaha, NE. It is 2,500 miles to either coast from my house. I enjoyed this video tremendously as I had my career end while teaching, technical seminars for up to 100+ techs, and much more! I complained but my boss sent spies to seminars to find out why my numbers where high, and 55 others stayed them same or went down. I told him that’s easy, I worked on these, fixed then and you did not! Blessing to you and your family if so blessed!

👍🏻. THANK YOU !! I’m an EE and seemingly have great difficulty explaining simple concepts to my kids. They have been bing-watching all of your older videos and the newer content. In this day and age where “science” is a construct of mega-business and the liberal mainstream media, it is so refreshing to see REAL SCIENCE / REAL LEARNING take place. Thank you again 73 KD2MKZ

Mr Hunkin - just the other day my wife was asking "remember that show we watched in the 80s - the private lives of machines or something like that... ?" What a pleasant discovery of your channel and nice to see your machinery has mellowed gracefully in the ensuing decades. Also, just last week I replaced a lot of burned out incandescent bulbs in my old receiver with spiffy new LEDs and so this video is quite timely for me as I got to thinking about the physics while waiting for solder to melt.

Not an expert? Nonsense, Tim! You're an expert in making educational videos. Glad to see you back. If anybody cares to bring back some memories, the music from the original series is "Val Bennett: The Russians Are Coming". It's on KZbin.

The LED and the Arduino family of microcontrollers go hand-in-hand; the LED helps you learn about the Arduino and the Arduino shows you what you can do with LEDs. Writing the code for the microcontroller isn't as daunting as you might think - as you have obviously discovered Tim. A great series, thank you.

This man was a huge part of my childhood curiosity via his Observer magazine strip, secret life of machines series, and later in life, his brilliantly funny machines on Southwold Pier. Just my sense of humour. Nice one Tim. Thanks

If you're reading these comments, I'm loving the videos, I've watched the secret life of machines hundreds of times, and I'm so happy to see you do these videos! I talked to you via email a few years back and i think a linear motor is a very interesting topic :) I think you said your sister? someone created a beautiful wall art light box, but sadly it flickers, smooth it with a capacitor and film again :) again, love to have you back, RIP Rex :(

Those vintage bulb style LEDs are interesting. Each “filament” is a bunch of tiny LEDs in series, and runs off something like 80-100 volts. So it’s actually pretty easy to put two or four in series and run them from the AC line voltage converted to DC.

Watching these AMAZING videos reminds me of Assemblage class at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 80's... I would have LOVED to be in that class with you, Tim - your respect for the materials really shines out of every moment, and makes me smile non-stop as I watch this. THANK YOU for crafting such a wonderful and instructive video! =)
