I liken him to Moses, the prophet and receiver of The Ten Commandments and law giver who liberated his people from the bondage of slavery. While leading his people across the desert for four decades, he performed many miracles for survival. It is a reality Mr Lee Kuan Yew liberated his people from the bondage of poverty and dominance. Even as embarked on his quest, he said something out of the supernatural, something no ordinary man dared say."Don't worry, Singapore will be a metropolis." In one monumental stride, he transformed what many regarded as an impossibility to become the promised land, a thriving metropolis, the embodiment of truth the world know today. If it were not for him, nobody can tell where we would be today. We probably won't have a loo to sit on let alone a roof over our heads. In the eyes of the world, he was a great visionary leader. To us, he was the more than that. Aptly put, he was our savior, a man from out of this world. RIP Mr Lee, our hero.

You think every CNA viewer, every uncle and aunty will go dig up the transcripts in 2009 to find out what Viswa said? Ken Yap Canada has two languages English and French. The swiss has a german majority with french,italian minorities. They also have protestants and catholics diversions as well. Singapore looks good but go and ask any malay or tamil about racial problems that they face in singapore and they will tell you about it.
@skychaos87
@skychaos87 9 жыл бұрын
VanaeCavae English and French are their common language, ie their first and national language. But their school don't teach mother tongues of their citizens isn't it. But i give that they are multi racial harmonious because they are literally made up of people from different race with a decent ratio. I've been there, it is not hard to see african, caucasians and asian races when you walk down their streets. Culturally they are still strong to have places like Chinatown, Japan/Korean streets etc. Switzerland on the other hand is not multiracial, they are largely made up of caucasian race. Culturally they aren't too different from each other despite the different language as they celebrate the same or similar holidays and culture. Singapore on the other hand was able incorporate languages from different race into their school curriculum and have holidays specific to their own culture. These are what most other countries don't have. Although i must say we aren't cohesive enough as we are still separated by the strong racial culture we were able to preserve but we are definitely harmonious enough to live together peacefully. "Singapore looks good but go and ask any malay or tamil about racial problems that they face in singapore and they will tell you about it." I disagree with such statement which seems to imply a negative message. I mean seriously try asking the same question to Canada and Switzerland's minorities and they probably will have the same negative response you are implying. If you have a point to make, you should be more direct so we can discuss about it. Also, for a fine example of racism and racial inequality you just have to look at our neighbors.

Robace Kai Siang Tey How is ti tougher for the PAP to handle the sensitive issues. When the PAP was opposed to the tudung issue for along time despite sikhs being allowed to wear their turbans in the government service. Both the sikh turban and tudung are religious and culturial headgear. Both need to be treated the same. The Government not giving thaipusam a holiday. even though many indians celebrate thaipusam. The malays have two hari raya holidays. The chinese two days off for CNY. The christians have christmas and good friday. The indians have one holiday only. and don't tell me about vesak day. the vast majority of indians don't celebrate that. Buddhism died out in india after the islamic conquest. It is an east asian religion now. It is like asking jews to celebrate christmas just because jesus was a jew. No sense at all. People have a right to express their views. Keep that in mind.

a few corrections. The civil rights movement in the US of the 1960's didn't establish the rights of blacks to vote but challenged the distinctive treatment based on race which was being used to suppress voting rights established way back in the 1870s. The Fifteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibiting denial of right to vote based on race was ratified in 1870. Poll taxes and Jim Crow laws set up as obstacles to black participation were slowly dismantled through a series of court rulings from 1890-1966. Also, it didn't take decades after to the Civil Rights act of 1964 to 'allow' black students to attend white schools, but 5-10 years to translate the obligation to desegregate into large-scale techniques that were actually effective at desegregating, like bussing.

@razjackson5825

I'm pretty sure he was well aware and understood as much as you've explained what real life effect things like the poll tax laws continued to have long after the 1800s. When what was promised and written down officially as active law is one thing, what was really happening in outcomes is another. So it's not at all inaccurate to put in a nutshell and say that black people couldn't really vote until after the civil rights movements of the 1960s. Much like how the constitution, which constituted freedom for all, was written long before that was ever a reality. So yep, his assesment on the gap between those documents and the outcomes following the civil rights movements were accurate. Listen to the recording again, that's the point and he doesn't even deny when the constitution and amendments 'stipulated' these things - 'you said this in writing in this and that year, but it was only after this and that event many many decades (even a century) later that it's been realised'.

@@razjackson58257:30-8:00 listen again. Maybe he means to be very impressionistic and not literally true, but I don’t think so. A person not already aware of this history would think by these words that blacks were unable to vote until the 1960s civil rights movement. Theres no need to be inaccurate like that in my opinion, especially if your purpose is to inform. It’s just as easy-better to make his point in my humble opinion- to say that the constitution defines equality from the get go but failed to in practice, and while voting rights were extended to all races nearly 100 years after the establishment of the constitution (15th amendment-1870), true equality has been a process the country aspires to up to the present day through various legislation most notably the civil rights act of 1965. I think the idea he’s getting at is that an aspiration is for guiding practical actions in an ongoing way-that there may be no singular point at which a country meets its aspirations but a series of improvements.

I don’t understand the analogy. Europeans colonised and occupied America where Africans were brought over as slaves. Native Americans were the indigenous people not the Africans. In Singapore the Malays are the indigenous people. The majority race did not build their majority here by colonisation but probably because there was no proper immigration policy before the founding of the country. The majority race then were also subjects to European colonial masters as the other Asian races were. Now after founding the country there are policies in place that seek to maintain the post-founding racial demographics through immigration.
