“So they bought Boeing 707s instead of making their own aircraft. Eventually they will, but it will take 2, maybe 3 generations.” The speech was in 1980. Now 2021, almost exactly 40 years and exactly 2-3 generations later, China is making its own commercial aircraft to compete with Boeing. This man’s foresight ever fails to impress. He deserves his own league as the greatest statue builder of the late 20th century, I dare say as great as the Iron Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck.

@@danony4837 in order to govern Singapore, he has to have the nerve of steel. Because Singapore except for its strategic location has nothing in terms of natural resources. Singapore is a boat in a fast and dangerous river. One misstep and that boat will capsize. The reason Singapore is successful is because of its meritocratic system which has produced the Human Resource required to attract investor and MNC. The moment you act like Singapore can maintain their economic miracle without effort and foresight, that very moment Singapore perishes right there and then.

Not everything. He did many things right and deserves credit but he also did many things wrong like any other statesmen. And while Singapore's rise was impressive, it was pretty much the same playbook used by Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan, etc... to raise itself from the ashes of war and poverty which LKY also studied. Singapore also hugely benefited from being in a very strategic location that's perfect for commerce, trade, banking, etc...

China was developing its own jet airliner back in the 70s and it was called Y-10. The project was based on Boeing 707 and it was equiped with 4 US made jet engines. The plane made its maiden flight in 1980 and it went on to making multiple other test flights until the government decided to shut the project down in 1986 in favor of co-manufacturing Douglas MD-80. Many years later China decided to make another try with ARJ21 and C919.

It is very impractical to use democracy in China back then and even now it's still hard. Democracy require people to have enough knowladge and good judgement of their own to decide what would benefits them and the community. In such a big country that have so many people. Making all people wise and reasonable is not realistic. You can sort of see this in the US nowadays too. People are aware of their power, their rights. But they are in constant conflict because of media manipulation, hate speeches, and each faction painting others as evil. It would be unrealistic to think that all people in the country can be educated enough to be in position that they cannot be manipulated and able to put down their pride and work together. Not that the one party system of China is superior, it also has flaw and can be corrupted. It doesn't take a genius to see that China was better under Deng than Xi, and his policies are too nationalistic. People just don't talk much about it because there's no point stoking flame to make it worse. But the point is many times American didn't even consider their system having any flaw at all while ridicule others.

To be honest, Lee Kuan Yew was such a perspicacious person in the world. During his presidency, Singapore has upgraded as one of the most successful, prosperious and powerful countries in the world. If I had a chance, I will definitely move there as a public citizen. I believe that Singapore would be the second largest nation behind China in less than ten years according to the current figures. Hope two countries can work together and strive for being the world~class exemplification.

@@seantan5678 Singapore's prime geography was way more critical to its success story than its leadership. It's one the most important transit ports on the planet and definitely the most important in the Indian Ocean/S. China Sea region for commerce, serving as a link between SEA and the rest of the world. Most countries cannot emulate Singapore simply because of this one factor, even with the best of leadership Not to mention, it's demographics. It's history of being a multiracial, multiethnic country from the get-go meant that old divisions and strifes that rifed other nations in the 20th century were entirely non existent in Singapore. And hard working immigrants make countries more dynamic And I bet there are even more complex sociological variables that helped in Singapore's success, which I'm not invested enough to speak about So did Lee Kuan Yew played a part in steering Singapore's way through to fruition via a combination of broad-based free market policies and low corporate taxes as well as other things like ensuring women participation in the workforce etc? Sure. Does he deserve credit for all of that? Sure But the irrational levels of cult of personality surrounding him should be contested

@lenno15697 3 жыл бұрын
@@nad1ax2 The ignorance in your comment is astounding. No racial divisions and strife!? The 1960s was characterised by race-riots between ethnic Chinese and Malays. Much of Singapore's early political history was characterised by this (and also religious) division. Support for political parties (especially support for communism) broke down amongst ethnic lines. Not to mention all the other issues that plagued Singapore but not other developed nations. Such as lack of access to freshwater, military vulnerability to Malaysia and a hostile Indonesia, and the genuine fear of a potential communist takeover. The only part you are right is that one should be aware of personality cults. Despite having been a great leader, he was not infallible (e.g. Operation Spectrum is a notable example), and cultifying political figures generally doesn't end well.

He wanted people to remember him in spirit and pass on his beliefs, not keep an old house then will one day become the likes of greek and roman ruins. He has great vision. Teachings and beliefs are immortal, but monuments will die one day. When monuments become ruins, then it gets forgotten. @MikeyJJJ 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with "keeping his house", other than the fact that he personally wished it torn down, is his memory is then embedded into an object. This makes it possible for future political leaders to exploit his "memory" (in quotes because it's more a false memory) for political purposes. That is the fundamental reason why he didn't want his name on roads, on holidays, or his face on money. Look at Mao in China, and the myriad libraries, cities, towns, roads and airports named after their presidents in America. Look at how their politicians and people today exploit the false memories of these dead politicians in their current politics. It's an inferior and potentially dangerous situation. The only thing LKY allowed his name to be put on is his beloved LKY School of Public Policy, and I say we should respect his wishes. Besides, like he said himself, if you want to celebrate the memory of LKY, just look at Singapore.
