Thank you for watching this Explanar Golf instruction video. In this session, the Explanar's inventor, Master PGA professional Luther Blacklock, analyses the great Lee Trevino's golf swing and explains why his impact position delivered such amazingly consistent shots. He also reveals why the positioning of the left thumb on the grip is so important for creating a powerful and accurate golf swing, and also explains how Ben Hogan was so close to unlocking the secret to the perfect swing plane in his iconic Modern Fundamentals of Golf book.

You can never understate how important a good grip is. My drives recently were fading out weak and short. I rotated my left thumb slightly clockwise to a weaker grip, and my drives came off long and straight. For some, a stronger grip might work better, but for me, it works like magic.

I had the same problem. If you rotated your left thumb slightly clockwise (club in hand), then the grip became stronger v. weaker. More left knuckles showing. That helped me as well!

Left thumb turned more clockwise is not a weaker grip but rather a stronger grip

If you use a neutral grip & keep the thumb on the top hand on the underside of the shaft at the top of the backswing, your wrist will be flat as it should be & square if it's not rotated or manipulated before impact. Just have the top of the wrist on the top hand facing the target thru impact & you're golden. There's too much clubhead manipulation being taught by using the hands & wrists, such as bowing at the top, which if not timed properly can cause hooks & pulls. KEEP IT SIMPLE!

Loved watching and listening to Trevino! While not taking anything away from Trevino, I'd wager Moe Norman's "extension thru impact" was longer than his or any ones.

Hi there, you can use a club, but the power roller is most effective because it stretches the muscles and creates change in the swing motion as a result. The left thumb position is the most important swing fundamental.

What would be the cause of me losing my balance in the golf swing?

It could come from any number of sources, Tom. Most likely is swinging out of plane or lack of wrist hinge.

Most tour players don’t need the swing trainer since they already swing in plane. It’s the amateur golfer who needs it!! :)

I have seen some incredible nonsense displayed by any number of arrogant Hogan Aficionados before, but attempting to convince me that Hogan’s backswing plane did not actually rest on his shoulders but extended through his sternum is the most ridiculous bullshit I’ve have come across in years. Despite what Trevino and Johnny Miller say regarding anything to do with the club face chasing down the line of flight after impact, both of them did exactly what Hogan did. That is to maintain shaft flex through impact for as long as possible, so that means going hard and fast to the left. Neither Hogan, Trevino or Miller, all three being “hitters” and not “swingers,” they did NOT allow their arms to become DETACHED from their bodies through impact-NO WAY!!!! How do we know? Because none of the three flipped the club face through impact, but instead stabilized the club face through impact. Luther, you made me laugh by your explanation of how to hook and fade the ball. Your demonstration was shockingly correct in that you did demonstrate the correct concepts a HITTER might want to incorporate into his release as he worked the ball. But, I am also 100% convinced that you only came upon this idea as a means to somehow involve your ridiculous Explanar device into a serious discussion because in reality you have essentially no idea whatsoever. Demonstrating a “point of contact” between your device and a golf shaft during a golf swing is bullshit personified. How can a POINT that’s developed between the shaft and the circular rail of your device have anything to do with a plane? It’s all just bullshit.
