This is one of the clearest videos showing quickly, in detail how to do this. Do you need to have the concrete base? I have read that a gravel base will do, I think that this will be easier and cheaper.Thanks for the helpful video.

The concrete is to form a collar that will not allow the soil to fall in. If your not going into the ground then probably gravel might be ok. But cheap enough for concrete and firm.

Great video. I’d love to have some advice on laying a liner to an L shape pond like this. I’m concerned it’s going to look a awful. Is there a good folding method to minimise folds and creases?

No special technique. It's always going to require folds and creases to do a liner like this. Plenty of extra material and carefully folding.

So I am just about to install a kockney koi skimmer box on my pond just wondering how best to install it. The skimmer box is around 1 inch above the main water level on my pond. well I hope it is the pond seems to be level know. So what advise would you give about fitting a skimmer ? the skimmer seems to be a 1/4 above what will be the water level. I in vision the water level of the pond will be about 1 inch below the top of the sleepers. Above that will be a capping piece of wood which is about 50mm in thickness.

Hi Lee, I have reclaimed railroad ties treated with creosote. I was going to use them for my pond structure. My idea was to use the ties to create the rectangle and then line it inside with ply wood, insulation, underlayment, and then the pond liner. Do you think the pond will be safe and not get effected by the creosote railway ties? Love your videos, got me inspired to build my first pond.

Fantastically informative video. I would like to create a similar design to this, but also line the smaller section with pond liner and use it as a wetland/bog filter. Can you suggest "double ended" bulkhead fittings which would work for this purpose?

You can use normal tank connector. Exactly like in this video. Just put one each side. Should work perfectly well.

Great video Lee i am building a pond out of new railway sleepers, for koi carp, not started yet as still watching and picking up tips before i start. Any tips? How deep to dig down or can you just build sleepers up to 4ft out of the ground? I've been told nexus is the only filter to go for?

Definitely dig down too. Bottom drain is a must. Nexus are good. But drum filter is better.

One question - you did not mention installing rebar through the sleepers then into the concrete base/ground? is this because the sleepers stacked on flat side construction is sturdy enough? I'm planning to expand the sunk 'trough pond' in the middle of patio area - by cutting out some patio slabs, digging out the trough, and make the space bigger/deeper. The Patio is flat - could I just place the 1st row of sleepers directly on patio without pouring concrete? I can drill rebar into the patio and into the ground to make things more stable? Thank you. Yes the rebar would add extra strength. Especially if your building up several feet.

Just use sleeves made up from hose of different sizes. Push them inside and tape up with electric tape.
