Travis Dickens During the operation, the patient usually bleeds heavily to the bodypart (such as a finger) and the bodypart starts to swell because of the blood that is getting in it. Sometimes, the surgeons put leeches on the bodypart while the surgeons try to reconnect it, so the leeches suck out the excess blood so the bodypart doesn't swell so much, and it's way easier for the surgeons to operate, and the bodypart doesn't swell too much. (that could cause the bodypart to rupture.)

From Wikipedia: The use of leeches in modern medicine made a small-scale comeback in the 1980s after years of decline, with the advent of microsurgery, where venous congestion can arise due to inefficient venous drainage. A leech can reduce swelling in the tissues and promote healing.[37][38] They are used to help restore circulation after microsurgery to reattach body parts,[37] and in Germany, they are also used to treat osteoarthritis.[39][40]

My great grandfather used to collect leeches in Germany and sell them in Syria He had entire wagons of leeches he also had some employees that used to collect with him

As a kid I got a leech on my foot and I had it for months. Because apparently I was walking in a swamp and a leech grabbed me on the back of my foot. The wound needed a whole year to recover. It was fun having it.
