Thanks for a great video! This is THE BEST explanation of Leech's maxims have found. Question for anyone who can help: Tact and Generosity had me a little confused. E.g. "Maximise expression of cost to self"... "Would you like a biscuit?" Then, as they eat it: " It's my last biscuit, and they're my favourites. I like them so much that I dragged myself to town on these two broken legs to get them. I'd get some more, but since I broke my legs I've been unable to work - doesn't look like I'll be able to afford any food at all for quite some time. Anyway, how are you enjoying my biscuit?" After some thought I wonder if Tact and Generosity are about expressions of DESIRE TO CAUSE cost/benefit to self/other. E.g. Maximise expression of cost to self: "This is my last biscuit, but I really want to you to have it because I value our friendship". Can anyone correct my thinking on this? Thanks.

Thanks Dani! You made it really understandable (I have the worst Pragmatics teacher. She's not pragmatic at all and doesn't respect the maxim of relevance :)) Awesome job!

Hello Dani🤗 Thank you for this video. It clarified some questions in my mind. But I still couldn't grab the difference between the maxim of tact and maxim of generosity. If we say " I'll present the report to the committee for you tomorrow. You can devote all your energy to preparing for the exam" Is it an example of maxim of generosity or maxim of tact? ☺️
@DanisRevisionChannel4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hope you're well. It's been a while since I looked at this but I think you're actually using both in turn. So "I'll present the report to the committee for you tomorrow" is maximising cost to self (per the generosity maxim), whilst "You can devote all your energy to preparing for the exam" is maximising benefit to others (per the tact maxim). Although that analysis depends on whether presenting the report is seen as a cost to self or not which I guess you need additional context for! Does that make sense? :)

Hey Dani, l just wanted to say thank you for your videos and revision notes, they helped me a lot through my GCSE's, I passed all of them! :) Unfortunately we are not doing the same A'levels :'(...I realise making videos about your revision notes is really helpful as you are more likely to remember them, and i was wondering how do you make your videos? :)
@DanisRevisionChannel10 жыл бұрын
Heyya :) Well done for your GCSEs - hope that you can repeat your success at A-Levels!! :D 1. I make notes from the textbook/class notes/whatever (these contain all necessary content in as few words as possible) [I skip this step for English] 2. I use these notes to make PowerPoints (these contain all necessary points but then lack explanation given in notes) 3. I use the Snipping Tool to take a snip of each slide 4. I insert these snips into my video editing software (I paid for my software years ago, but any editing software should work) 5. I have my notes and editing software open side-by-side and say what I feel like into the microphone for each slide (I never use scripts) 6. I use my editing software to make my video into a file which I can upload onto here and VOILA :D Let me know if you make any videos and I'll include you on my 'featured channels' thingy :) Hope this helped!! Dani :)

Hey! I thought I'd say this on here because you would be more likely to see it. I was wondering if you could send me your revision notes for GCSE medicine through time and also any Germany notes if you did that too:) Thanks I have an exam on Wednesday and they would come in very useful!
