This is a very good series about a lesser known (to those in the West) aspect of the end of WWII in Europe. Poignant and without glorification of war, this is excellent work. Congratulations to all involved.

That was a very realistic film. Such a shame noble courageous fighting men suffered after the end of the war at the hands of those who were to scared and cowardly to face them in combat. At least now Estonia and the other baltic states are free from communism and can remember their brave fighting men.

During the Soviet occupation 60 000 estonian sitizen were deported to Siberia, estimated 20 000 of them died fo malnutrition, cold weather conditions and hard labour. Those who survived - returned to Estonia in 1950-es. During the German occupation 125 000 man, women and children were executed to death in Estonia - including jews, gypsies, estonians, ethnic russian estonians and soviet POWs. Estonian Home Guard, 287th and 36th Estonian Police Battalions took active part in killing of innocent civilians. Do you see how "free of communism" Estonia behaved ? "Noble courageous fighting men" were robbing, raping and murdering bastards - even to own countrymen. Nazie and SS are still murderous Nazie and SS.

I’m sorry, but Soviets were anything but cowards. They faced one of the most professional, most destructive, and most disciplined military forces at the time. The Baltics deserve their independence. But Soviets never were too coward to face the SS or Wehrmacht. Estonians chose to side with Germany, and Germany lost. Anyone who fought for their families, whether it was a fight against Nazis of Communists, deserves respect.

As a Vietnamese anti-communist, I can't help but feel sorry for the poor Baltic peoples who had to endure decades of oppressive communist and Nazi dictatorships. I'm glad all the three Baltic nations are now free. We Viets are working hard so we will also be free, too.

I have many times thought about Vietnamese war. In the West there is common narrative that it was very bad that evil US intervened and very good that they went out and noble-minded Ho Chi Minh communists won. From my Estonian perspective that could be somewhat wrong story. Nobody in the West does speak about sufferings under communists or suffering of all those escaping on boats. Many of us Estonians escaped with small fishing boats above stormy sea, many drowned or hunted down by Russian military ships, so we can understand Viet-nam people well. Compare the "awful fate" of Japan or North-Korea, "progressive leftists" had not such influence and US army occupied both, didn't abandon them - and today they are democratic free countries. Let compare that with North-Korea's fate under the rule of glorious communists.

Also, they love to claim Vietnamese inventions such as paper, rice agriculture, Asian architecture, Far East Asian cultures plus many other items were all invented by VIETNAMESE people. And the Chinese love to LIE and STEAL these great accomplishments from Vietnam.

@@Anthony-Sanders003 If you think they were "Nazi" you are in the wrong path. Estonians didn't love Germans at all and they hate Nazis, but Soviet short -time occupation had been such a horror that anybody doesn't wanted to return of that - so only possibility to get arms and resist Russians was to join Waffen-SS. Have you ever thought why Estonians avoided German conscription at times when Germans were so successful - and massively joined German army at times when everyone understood that they are loosing? You seem to think that they were extreme Nazis with strong suicide inclinations? By the way, did you knew that when Estonian soldiers must to say Nazi greeting "Heil Hitler!" they said "Ei ütle!" instead - for Germans it sounded very similar, but in Estonian language it means "I don't say it!".
