@@graterdeddly9527 I'm not sure you know what you're talking about or you're just trolling. You are obviously welcome to your opinion but they are way more talented musicians & DJs then you're giving them credit for and/or casual listeners even realize.
@graterdeddly95273 жыл бұрын
@@Ddubs1975 Some things are a matter of taste, subjective, and others have an objective component to them -- e.g. J.S. Bach is more talented and made better music than Sid Vicious. With the Beasties, I am old enough to remember them when they first came out and toured with Madonna -- though not their very beginnings as a punk band. Ric Rubin pushed them, and was smart enough to be the first (that I can think of) to meld Heavy Metal with a rap song -- ("Right to Party"). I even bought the album -- I still like some of the songs, but somewhere along the line I realized that rap is the cut rate junk food of music. It's not the Oreos, it's the fake Oreos that you buy when you can't afford the real kind. A song like "Sabotage" is a good example, it's got a great build up, lots of things going on, and then just never quite gets there -- I keep waiting for a chorus that never comes. I still like the tune, but my only point, which I did have, is that the Beasties are highly overrated. People seem to think of them as the white guys who can legitimately do rap, and they are as good as anybody -- but that isn't saying much. Race has nothing to do with it -- and for me, hip hop crested with Blowfly and Rapp Dirty.
@Ddubs19753 жыл бұрын
@@graterdeddly9527 @Grater Deddly your points are valid, and I too am old enough to know the entire arc of the Beastie Boys musical life. The way I see it, what you're saying about them applies mostly to their early works... to which I agree their talent was clearly more limited. But as they progressed, they started to learn how to play different instruments and the evolution is apparent. They really started to hit their stride when they began working with Mario Caldato. Many in the industry consider Pauls Boutique the magnum opus of sampling. But to me, they were at their best in Check Your Head when they fused Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop & a minimal amount of punk/rock seamlessly. I saw them live twice on that tour and was blown away by their instrumental breaks. Anyways, the only point I'm trying to make is that they became quite talented as musicians and refined their MC skills greatly as their career progressed. Everyone has a limit on their talent, but they became a lot more than 3 guys dependent on samples.

Is that ad roc busting a guitar solo over the whole thing?

Joo Boy It’s an AC/DC sample, but that’d be dope.

Should have done it with AC/DC like Run DMC did with Aerosmith.

Run DMC actually did Aerosmith's OWN song with them. This is just a sample. However when I was kid who didn't know any better I thought this song was pretty cool. Then one day I found my brother's old 8 track of Back in Black in the garage. I immediately recognized the riff, and just like that I was a lifelong AC/DC fan, and Back in Black became one of my top 2 all time favorite albums.(the other being AFD by GnR)

Mike D said he spoke with Malcolm Young on the phone about getting permission to use the sample, but AC/DC just couldn't get with the whole concept of sampling or rock rap....Took a few more years for people to finally get it -- and to see the commercial potential.

Just now reading in the book Horowitz & Mike D trashing this record - I don't get it - sounds pretty good 35 yrs later - what's not to like? It even kinda sounds like "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" - and they weren't even being dicks yet. Now "Girls" - that's something to be embarrassed about.

The term b-boy got distorted once cats outside of the Bronx started saying it. B-boys were breakers not rappers.
