I'm fairly new to this stuff-just using ESP32s and Arduinos so far-but I was able to get Android working on my 1.5 gb version just fine! In the video it shows he doesn't change the option in the Phoenix program for the image to burn as a startup (he does it correctly on his Mac when it works). Someone in another video pointed this out and it was the difference between getting a boot error and it starting perfectly. The Phoenix thing is annoying and it's hard to find the actual program within the zip folder but just keep looking; I think he does show the exact file in this video. And I was on Windows 11 so not sure what that warning was about. I've only spent about 15 minutes on the Pi itself so far but seems great; Google worked and I was able to learn that right-clicking is "exit" or "back" for fellow newbies.

It's Ok for what it is and being Allwinner, it will heat your whole home during the winter. I can't help feel that this is a product that I would have expected to see 3 or 4 years ago. My S905X2 from 2018 outperforms this for media playback and streaming. Looking at how OrangePi software development actually works, I do not expect much more to come from them. I'm not sure what the progress for things like Panfost is for Allwinner but it is a generally less supported platform in the open source communities. Could end up being one of those buy because it's cheap, 5 minute wonders that ends up gathering dust because ultimately it doesn't do as well as hoped for. 720p KZbin in Android is not that impressive really and can be achieved by cheap TV boxes produced many years ago. Perhaps the GPIO element will see it garner more practical use for specialised projects.

So I guess it's no compliant to youe use cases, but from my part I use extensively these Orange PI cards since years. And I guess you miss the Orange Pi 5. Sorry for you.
@terrydaktyllus1320 Жыл бұрын
You sound to me precisely the sort of person that shouldn't be using the "lesser" SBCs anyway and that you've got "sour grapes" over Orange Pi, due to your own personal frustrations. The fact is that hobbyists have been spoilt with the amazing level of support that has been provided for Raspberry Pi, and if that works for most people then good on them. But you can't use Raspberry Pi as the baseline for every other SBC out there - if you start getting into those devices then you should set an expectation of having to do a lot of research and tinkering yourself to get them working optimally. Having myself made Gentoo Linux builds on Banana Pi's, Orange Pi's, Asus Tinkerboard, and a few others, you even have to build your own kernels sometimes to get hardware working as best as possible. The fact is that, by default, SBCs are "hobbyist" devices which means having to do a lot of stuff yourself - the support the Raspberry Pi gets has made it more of a consumer computing device which puts it into a different category for that reason alone. You're simply not comparing "like for like" here.

@terrydaktyllus1320 good comment and reality check for the average "consumer" expecting these to work with out-the-box images.

You can't do anything with Linux on a computer with less than 4GB RAM??? Where does that nonsense come from? You can have a fully booted and ready to go XFCE desktop in less than 200MB! And I am sure you can EASILY run Debian in 4GB. The problem are people wasting CPU and RAM resources on needless eye candy and desktop effects. Clearly some Linux users need to understand better how to optimise their builds.

Thanks Lee for this video. I just saw another video by Taki Uton where he couldn't get Android to install on a San Disk SD card but his Chinese clone installed fine. @Kw1161 Жыл бұрын
@@junovicz Yes sir, I meant hidden back doors built in that version of Android and the cheap SD card itself. I do not have the technical skills to verify it ,but SanDisk values its reputation to allow such security breaches, but as the user himself called it a “cheap Chinese SD Card”. So I believe in the old Russian proverb “Trust but Verify.”….so I would not put any sensitive information on said SD card or on that Android system, because when you on the internet you never know who is watching you for your data. One can always find a reason not to do something. I have just ordered two from Aliexpress for a very good price, and happy to wait a couple of weeks for them to arrive. You're simply highlighting a "chicken and egg situation" anyway - nobody is going to set up a more localised distribution network if there isn't the demand for the products. If you buy the boards as they are currently then the chances of local availability increases.
