Apologies for the weird sound glitch at 22:09. I tried to re-render, with changing the clip to fix it, but it must not have helped. @ctbans Her issue is that all her best lines were cut. Plus Zoey is generally more likeable with a broader appeal, the "College Girl who likes Movies, Guns, and Video Games" makes her attractive to a wider subset of the target audience, Nerdy Guys who are generally bad with women. Rochelle is a Journalist who is an almost motherly figure to Ellis, so she doesn't have that broad of an appeal, but still she isn't bad, just mod in her Cut Lines, and she's quite nice.

A point about The Passing - canonically the L4D1 survivors sail off to an island off the mainland to live in (supposed) safety, away from the infected and military. There is an official 'The Sacrifice' comic online by Valve that gives us backstory on the original survivors, plus what happened in-between Blood Harvest and The Sacrifice. Them meeting up with the L4D2 survivors was just random happenstance while they were still recovering from the events of The Sacrifice before setting sail. You can even see the boat they're going to take in the level itself, just to the side of the bridge.
@alybadry203
@alybadry203 8 ай бұрын
I still wish to know the fate of both groups. Will the original survivors find more people who are immune ? What will the military be doing woth the l4d2 group ? Researched to spread immunity ? A cure ? Make them wear gear to avoid trasmitting the disease to extract other survivors? Or just kill them ?
@thomasdeen2099
@thomasdeen2099 2 ай бұрын
The ending of The Sacrifice comic and the L4D survivors not inviting the L4D2 survivors on the sailboat pretty much says the former group's perspective on other immune people, they will only look after themselves and if they meet anyone (that aren't majorly aggressive) they will provide them with some help but not entirely assimilate them into their group. For L4D2 since they didn't leave the group to die with the bombed bridge we can assume that they weren't taken in to be killed, so we either have two outcomes: They were taken in for testing or like in The Sacrifice comic where the soldier suggested to let them fight in the front lines (Which is VERY smart).

57:00 I agree with your points, the survivors sometimes do go a bit OTT with their callouts. Coach to me makes sense though. He is a sports teacher so it makes sense he has a distinct, booming voice to grab the attention of whoever needs to hear what he is saying. I noticed in a few clips you started to turn around to look at him when he says the lines which i guess shows his effectiveness at grabbing attention. I think its just the game causing the survivors to spit these lines out a bit more than they should. Great video my man :)

Thank you so much! Actually I turned around each time since I was trying to show how pointless some of those were, since I wasn't in any danger lmao. I've been playing L4D1, for future video/patreon video reasons, and I DID notice that those survivors said lines like that a lot too when turning on the captioning, so maybe Coach and his booming voice was the cherry-popper, the one to shatter the illusion and make me aware of it in the first place. 1:10:06 expert realism is pretty much a community of its own. It’s what I almost exclusively play and much like the versus community, you’ll see the same faces if you play often enough. A lot of us recognize each other even if we aren’t friends and will continue to not send friend invites despite playing together about as often as friends would lmao. Believe it or not, this is our “casual” experience playing left 4 dead. It isn’t uncommon for 4 players to breeze through a campaign on expert realism, not really sweating, and a lot of time, not even communicating besides all 4 collectively saying “gg” at the end and leaving. I prefer communication in my social game but those matches where everyone is quiet and just relaxing killing zombies together are kinda cute lol.

Theres alot of animation videos that make l4d2 campaings like a series (the best one being the l4d2 beejie bean series) that show alot of their personality. I think both groups are equally great. jockeys used to be integral to a charger knocking someone off a map in versus. Also they didn't suck. Their jump should have just been a little more magnetic/sticky. Correction i thought id add to this really well crafted video! You say Cold Stream was a community map turned official. The Last Stand was also the same deal but you didn't say anything about that so in case it was an error. The Last Stand campaign was created by a few members of the community for left 4 dead 2. Valve to my knowledge had little or none involvement in the design process. Otherwise amazing video!

I think what makes the L4D2 survivors less tolerable to you could be that they aren’t very relatable to you. As someone from the south, Ellis, Rochelle and Coach are pretty common people to come across in everyday life. Bill and Francis would fit in with that group. I think, personally, Ellis and coach are far more relatable than any of the other characters. Also, the construction worker zombies. Aren’t affected by pipe bombs because they wear ear protection. They can’t hear it.

On your point about the Passing's story not making sense, it's partly because it follows the lore of The Sacrifice comic, and not necessarily the campaign. Very much looking forward to this video, course some small corrections from the video itself: The L4D1 mutation like you point out doesn't change the newly added forced crescendo events added to Chapter 4 of Dead Air, but also new ones are added for Death Toll (Chapter 4) and Blood Harvest, (both Chapter 3 and 4). Also the original 4 weapon models/sounds from L4D2 are still different from L4D1, like the pistols, pumpshotgun, hunting rifle ect. Fallen Survivors originally were intended to appear in L4D2 base game but valve cut them at the last min (You can actually see them in one of the scenes during the l4d2 opening, the one with rochelle at the turret in swamp fever's mansion. The ported versions of L4D1 Campaign's also had some of uncommon infected added to those campaigns with colors swapped to match the l4d1 commons. I.E CEDA/Construction zombies in the hospital/construction sites, mudmen in sewers, and very rarely fallen survivors. The unique lines you heard on certain campaigns are voice lines mostly for the L4D2 cast that valve recorded purely for the community to use in custom campaigns, so they often can fit for almost anything you can think of.
@Dorkaxe
@Dorkaxe Жыл бұрын
Holy shit, I didn't know about the Valve getting the cast do say generic lines, thing. Holy fuck that's so cool. I knew about certain crescendo events turning into a gauntlet in L4D2's mutation/general L4D2 on the first game's maps, but I didn't see that as significant as making the metal detector mandatory in Dead Air. Like, for instance, the crows that you scare away in Blood Harvest in L4D1 invites a big wave of zombies, but in L4D2, it's an endless wave. It is a difference, you're right, but I suppose I didn't see it as big of a change when writing.

32:56 given what source 2 allows for (unsealed maps iirc are possible) they could have popped the fuck off with this concept and let the ai director literally change the entire floor plan of a building by giving it a set of rooms to place between two empty doorways in a map with nothing in between them. Like imagine no mercy but the hospital layout is a little different every single playthrough. Maybe it could be more than a little. It could add entire new rooms, maybe have less rooms, take an entire new path even. Plus with the item spawn location system it could result in vastly different experiences that test the reaction speed and adaptability of the players. Giving it not total but a moderate amount of control over layout could be sick

I've sunk in several hundred hours into this game and I've pinpointed why it is timeless. It's simplicity and straightforwardness eases newer players into the game whilst having very apparent skill ceilings to reach as you've become more experienced and familiar. Sure, I think that playing it in casual setting is fun in its own way but having a full stack being locked in and committed to finishing a map is a feeling like no other, especially on custom maps where the difficulty is unforgiving. I do feel that because of this relatively high skill ceiling, versus has become quite unplayable unless you're in custom lobby with friends. Still one of the best games to accompany my childhood and the main source of core memories with my friends Amazing video axe, keep it up 🖤🙌🙌

The issue with players opting to use the most efficient loadout can usually be traced back to the devs unable to make other "less viable" options fun or interesting. In the history of gaming, players have time and time again search for better ways to tackle the game. So let's say in L4D2 case, there's usually no incentives to keep your SMG once you found an AK or any other tier 2 weapons. So they could have made the SMG able to do things those tier 2 weapons can't (without nerfing the tier 2 weapons). I don't know how, but that's the general consensus that other devs do in their game, to incentivize their players to try out everything the game has to offer. Honestly, if I were to buff tier 1 guns, I say if you equip SMG, you can carry 2 throwables or 2 pills/adren. So then players will have to make a choice if they want a stronger primary or able to carry more stuff for later.

Years later but I feel like the difficulty setting is definitely a skill check where it’s important to remember, “Difficulty is made to be a challenge not to make you feel accomplished for doing less.” I think the difficulty is fine and is better (when played with people that aren’t bots of course)

I hadn’t finished watching the whole vid yet, but I think the new specials really distinguish L4D2 from the original. I did read that one of the main issues was that it was far too easy for survivors to bottle themselves into a choke point and challenge every special and common to a firing squad of auto shotguns and assault rifles. The only time this isn’t ideal is fighting a tank, at which you don’t have to deal with commons unless it’s the end of a finale. The new specials were added specifically to defeat this tactic; Jockeys can drag players away whichever direction they please, Spitters can chuck area attacks which deal damage over time, and the Charger is a mini tank whose charge can knock players away before pinning someone.

I felt that same way near the 11 minute mark about the ammo piles. I actually tried out a sourcemod that makes them limited use to further the weapon switching mechanic, but ended up not liking it because it wouldn't save my settings between maps let alone sessions, and its defaults were so limited it would outright break many finales, nor did it give the means to change those defaults in a text editor.

the game balance of L4D2 was broken once they added melee weapons into the game. while i do love the melee weapons, i will say that you should not be able to just keep swinging a melee weapon forever. there needs to be a cool down just like the shove has
@brendendonohue2746
@brendendonohue2746 11 ай бұрын
Well shoving is instantaneous meaning in L4D1 you can be in a corner and shove like crazy and be untouchable while melee weapons take a second to make contact and you could still take damage in a horde.

@@brendendonohue2746 while that is true, back in L4D1 the infinite shove didn't let you kill zombies unless you shoved them like 5 times. in L4D2, 1 single swing of a melee weapon can kill almost a full horde in front of you

@@phoenixrose1995 As a not-very-skilled gamer (it's just a fact, I've got over 1k hours in this game lol), who especially struggles at managing hordes of commons, I don't agree that melee weapons are too powerful and handle commons too easily. I've had to really work on my timing with them and still get in real trouble if my back isn't against a wall or ideally a corner. I think sometimes people with well-honed skills forget that many of us out here can learn the game well but still just naturally have poor/non-virtuosic skill :P Melees help balance that for us, but they're far from feeling op.

L4D2 clears the first by a mile. Not just because it has more weapons and special infected, that's obvious with a sequal, but the campaigns and level design in l4d2 are unmatched. They also nailed the cast. They all represent a very common type of person in the south perfectly. They just have so much flavor.

My main problem with the updated zombie roster is that the zombie players can no longer rely on getting the right special at the right time. In the original game, my buddies and I had No Mercy down to a freaking science. We knew all the good ambush spots, we knew how to react around manholes, we knew how to get the long Hunter jump damage bonus, we knew when to engage with our Hunters and when to hang back. And we knew how to pull all of this off because we could always rely on having two Hunters, one Boomer, and one Smoker. In the sequel, you'd often get a Charger or something when you didn't need it, which really fucked with our rhythm. I would say that the Spitter is absolutely vital to the zombie roster because survivors had a tendency to stack up in closets, but I think creating the Spitter as its own special was a mistake. Instead, they should've given the Spitter's area denial ability to the Smoker as a secondary action. I also somehow feel like the new roster made the game too easy for the zombie players. It was no longer about pulling off that masterfully coordinated ambush because all you needed to do was deal damage with your Charger and/or Spitter, rather than blinding and separating the survivors with your Boomer and Smoker. Don't get me wrong, blinding and separating the survivors was still good, it just wasn't as important anymore. The game became less complex somehow, even though there was more stuff in it, and I thought that was a great shame.

3:33 this just cements how awesome valve was and somewhat still is a little. Seeing other ytube vids descrjbing l4d2 like crowbat, the act man, etc. and reading or rather playing the in game dev commentary It really calls in how much effort and hard work was put into the game. At the time just how advanced it was vs other games at the time and even now. I remember a quote from the devs how less is more. They simplified mechanics but stretched them as far as possible. Ex: Audio cues. Simple but each enemy or event had specific ones. Its how you can tell each special infected apart. Being puked on or a car alarm / event scripted alarm or just random hoarde incoming sounds. You knew the second you heard the music change hype up and a chorus get louder that a witch was nearby along with the red over her and her wails. When startled the music changes and kicks into high gear. The community made content mods are also great. The simplicity of everything made the game easier to rework and mod. Even the infected having a stuntman do like what 4k different poses of dying or running. For the regular hoarde mind you. Devs really honestly earned their paychecks and extra. Steam keeps coming out ontop and valve just keeps getting higher on the tier list of publishers even if they had some flops most of their games and steam as a service p much outweights their competition. They dont even have to do anything. Other companies and games are getting worse but they choose not to rest on their laurels and keep pushing out new innovations. Gaben helping in hand delivering the first wave of what 400 or so steam a decks recently just shows how valve is still a relative and standalone great company.

The levels, melee weapons, and expanded options for throwables and rifles are definitely all major improvements. I also love the new set of personalities on display for characters. The tweaks to some common infected add a lot to distinguish each campaign and change the play style enough to keep it fresh. The new special infected though can be an exercise in frustration. Spitters are a welcome addition; I like how they can deny access to areas and work best in tandem with other infected. The jockey is fine but a bit imbalanced in how it functions as the midway point between a hunter and smoker; it does a little too much damage while mounted to be balanced but I can overlook this. The charger however… the ****ing charger… This one is utterly broken in how much damage it can take, how it can swiftly take a player across a map often insta-killing them, and how many can spawn through every level. I have been incapacitated or killed by chargers more than any other infected in the game. Left 4 Dead 2 is damn good but the Director needed to be toned down just a hair because it feels like there is always at least one special infected to deal with every moment even on normal. I used to play this game with the developer console on at all times so I could despawn chargers on certain maps or when it felt like I was getting an unfair amount of them. Tl;dr: New weapons and the spitter are great. Jockeys should do slightly less damage. Chargers should be limited to three per map maximum. The AI Director should be given a longer cooldown between special infected.
