I've been a piano play 35 years now. My dominant hand is right hand. For moving the platters on my Rane One, I'm comfortable left or right. I figured I should be doing dominant hand on the platter. Left hand on the crossfader has felt really awkward, but that's what I've been doing. After seeing this video, and after three mintes of my dominant hand on the crossfader, it feels 100% better. This is really, really important and I'm SO glad I found this.

I naturally went dominant hand on the crossfader. I always though the opposite. Great vid

First of all, I apologize for my English; it's not my first language. One day, I realized that scratching can be compared to playing the guitar. Being right-handed, I draw parallels between strumming with the right hand on the guitar and manipulating the fader. This hand allows the sound to emerge, much like playing the guitar where the same hand creates the sound. On the other hand, the left hand on the jogwheel is comparable to the hand that selects the melody to be produced. Similar to playing the guitar, this hand determines which melody will be heard. As someone who plays the guitar, this analogy has helped me understand scratching better. I hope this visualization assists others in identifying the hand they are most comfortable with when starting to scratch. MUCH LOVE

Very true, my most advanced scratches come out when dominant hand is on cross fader. Thanks for the 2 month challenge 😊😊

thanks for the tutorial.. watching all the way in Jamaica... just figuring out this scratching thing... my dominant hand is on my fader.. and i can do some crazy transforms... dwl.. for my little tries.... however my left hand needs a lot of work... (i honestly feel my left hand jogwheel.. right hand (dominant on the fader) works for me and is impressive.. but i realize that my right hand jogwheel (dominant) with left hand fader.. just scratches different.. and wish I could do the same type of transformations i can when on the left jog wheel....

I’m left handed and learn to scratch with my left hand on the platter. Scratching the other way feels uncoordinated. I admit, I haven’t applied too much time on my right but after seeing this video I will try it. Thank you! Maybe I’ll finally learn the crab scratch. lol.

I think it depends on what kind of scratch you are performing. But i was dominant hand on record all the time, when i switched i found i was better using left hand. Since it doesn't feel natural you are more precise in each step.

Wow. I've just started learning how to scratch this week on my controller and I am right handed so I've been using my right hand on jog and left hand on CF. I could barely manage a baby scratch and would quickly lose rhythm, it felt completely unnatural with no control. I switched hands and BAM. Instantly it feels more natural and i can do a decent baby, chirp, forward and even transformer scratch all of which seemed impossible at first Best piece of advice ever thanks Pri yon Joni, absolute game changer.

Great video! Had a lot of time to practice some scratching during quarantine last year and found out that strong hand on the fader was key.

Great video. I so wish I would have had the internet and this short but extremely important bit of advice when I started. Once you get used to scratching the "wrong way", it is so difficult to make adjustments. Your muscle memory is just cemented in place and slows you down at every turn.

Cross fader is just switch on or off. Record hand so many diffrent pitches you can do. So makes sense to have better contral of record hand

very interesting, im right-handed and i gravitated towards my dominant right hand on the jogwheel and i would say im an intermediate scratcher. my left hand scratching is pretty weak in comparison, gonna practice it for 2 months and see what happens

Dominant hand on crossfader for sure. I struggle using my off Hand to move the Jogs really fast with scribbles, double tears ect but i sure as shit can't use my off hand on the crossfader when doing Intermediate scratch combinations that require a lot of clicks lol, i have to concentrate so hard to try and pull it off it literally causes me pain in my hand through tension :( I had to try and use my off hand a few weeks ago as my fader goofed and was bleeding on the side i normally use, was cramping up after

Yes, my dominant hand is right yet I am better(for now) with my right hand on the crossfader. I am practicing however tho. My tendency is to scratch with my left hand. I transform and everything better with my dominant hand (right)on the crossfader....

I'm gonna try it.. I'm right handed and the crossfader is like kryptonite to my dom hand, but I can do semi advanced scratches with my dom on the jogwheel. When I first tried djing in the early 90s, I put my mixxer on the left hand side and both 1200s on the right hand side. Side by side and it worked well for me. I didn't want to keep buying records so I gave it up.

I'm exactly the same but right handed. I prefer right hand on the cross fader as I can get better control. On the other side with left hand on the fader I can only do very basic scratches

I've been a right handed guitar player for 10 years so I found naturally my dominant hand was better on the jog wheel as it was used to strumming and tight ryhtms from guitar and then for my left thanks to my guitar playing be better with the crossfader and any triplet moves with my fingers as they had way more independence because of scales etc. Do for me being right handed I like using my left hand on the crossfader

I tried dominant hand on jog at first for months and felt like i was making no progress when i switched it ......it just felt natural then i saw it like writing im right handed i can write with my left but not very fast or good with my right on the cross faster and sounds much better i still pratice the other way so i can at least not sound sick on the other side lol but its all a journey like the vid this is exactly how i felt.

for me actually i try to scratch both hands but for advanced pattern i train with my dominant hand on the crossfader but once i met angelo he told me to put the dominant on the platter and the other on the crossfader because as angelo said youu don't have to put tension on the crossfader and it has to be loose since then i have started to train with my dominant hand on the jogwheel!
@SLIC3R23 жыл бұрын
I always put my dominant right hand on the crossfader, i guess i thought that the crossfader needed faster movement so thats where i rested my hands knowing my left hand is slower

I would still call myself a beginner and have been giving equal practice to both sides, because I want to be able to scratch with both hands, but I'm definitely better with my dominant hand on the crossfader. Those fingers are just able to more quickly. My theory was that my right hand was simply more used to the speed from pressing buttons fast on a video game controller, but it could be something else.

When I started out with DJing my dominant hand (right) was on the platter for basic scratches. The last 12 months I noticed I'm more comfortable with my dominant hand on the crossfader. As I'm picking things up again. I keep seeing videos of people saying the dominate hand needs to be on the platter because it gives you better control over movements, especially slow precise ones or highly advanced. So I felt guilty with the dominant hand on platter combo.

I,m an odd one also. I write left handed , bat in cricket right handed, bowl right handed but use my knife and fork left handed. Not sure whet that makes me. Play guitar badly right handed though. What should I do ?

Haven’t read the other comments but my question is if you use your dominant hand on the cross fader like you and I both do, then do you just train your opposite hand for the cross fader when scratching on the other deck? I’ve seen djs cross their arms to accomplish this but it seems awkward to me. I’ve even seen some DJs put both decks next to each other with the mixer on the side instead of the middle.
@priyonjoni3 жыл бұрын
Once you get acclimated to scratching this way, you can train the other hand to do some scratches. As demonstrated in the video, I am able to do joe Cooley techniques with my weak hand on the crossfader.
@NexuJin3 жыл бұрын
I remember watching one of your stream where you were practicing new scratching skill. One where you started at low bpm (80 or so) and gradually up the bmp. During that I noticed a lot of the difficult work goes mostly into the crossfader. So I started practicing instinctively with my dominant hand on the crossfader as that apparently need much more control than the hand on the platter. I'm gonna try to practice everyday especially after watching your demo with the AI pro on the CDJ3000 got me really inspired to learn how to scratch better. I always had a preconceived notion that scratching was only for hiphop music. But you showed me that it can work with EDM with amazing results! Which scratching skills would you recommend to start practicing with for a newbie (beside the transformer) that are useful for EDM music?
