A Leslie King Tuition Series is free on the internet on GOLF TODAY UK. This is just what you talked about, well written and has illustrations. I really enjoyed this read. The left arm is in control and the importance of maintaining closed shoulders well into the downswing.

Another wonderful video. What amazes me about some of the instruction from 1900 to 1960 is how relevant it is today. Many modern instructors repackage the ideas of teachers such as Alex Morrison, John Jacobs, and Leslie King.

Thank you Pete. This is why I encourage young members of my profession to read the classic books. Knowing what has been said and proven valuable about the golf swing, regardless of modern ‘fashion,’ is invaluable. ⛳️

Watched a number of your videos after picking up golf a couple months ago. Had so many issues with contact and consistency. After watching the first 3 videos in this series and applying some of the basics you talk about in my swing…I had my best range session yet. Most crucial out of all of those was how you setup with standing straight than bending slightly. Made all the difference in the world after I’ve been bending my knees too much resulting in hitting before the ball. Thank you so much for giving us all this knowledge! God bless

i remember seeing still pictures in a book something like "in search of the perfect swing" or something like that and it had still pictures of pro level golfers with a tracer on their club action and the downswing path was actually outside the backswing although since i've been golfing it has been taught to strive for the other way around, more from the inside.

Thanks Steve. The first pro I worked for after emigrating, Jack Bird, knew my enthusiasm for golf literature and gave me a copy of Cochran and Stobbs' book. For me it was one more confirmation that 'in to out' was not completely helpful. ⛳

@@britgolfdad yes, that's the book. i also remember it had a picture of a man sitting on an elephant trying to swing a giant golf club. i also had the leslie king book as well as many, many' many books but i gave them all away except for a few. i've been golfing for close to 50 years, a 13 hdcp. and live in massachusetts.

Very familiar with Mr King's work...I first heard about his method years ago after reading about LPGA Hall-of-Famer Julie Inkster being an advocate of it. She and her husband would travel to London to take lessons from Mr King in his studio. The book was published in the States as Leslie King's 'Free Arm Swing Method' I believe. I saw a lot of his method in young Tom Watson's swing when I watched him a lot in the '70s. Thanks for the recommendation of Mr. Adwick's book...I was able find a good copy from an online bookseller and just got it in the mail. Looking forward to reading it. Keep up the great instruction!

Thanks John. I didn't know that about Julie. The construction stage for my channel is almost done and it has reached the threshold for monetisation, so I will indeed be focusing more on content. ⛳

Thanks so much for this, I’m fighting with inside out on the downswing, as I’m a chronic over the top golfer. It’s good to know that it’s OK to come back on a plane that is inline with the target, but outside the backswing line, cheers.
@DASH1ful2 ай бұрын
Yes, it is all about realignment and not over the top. With the over the top move the arms increase separation. But, the secret is to trigger the downswing by pressing your left hand against your right hand
@G3516dude2 ай бұрын
@@DASH1fulthanks, do you mean triggering the downswing by pressing the left hand against the right hand, at the top of the backswing?
@garrymajor75282 ай бұрын
Or are you saying pushing the right hand down with the left hand causing the club to shallow.
@DASH1ful2 ай бұрын
@@G3516dude Yes. It's as simple as that
@DASH1ful2 ай бұрын
@@garrymajor7528 The club, will shallow; but the left wrist doesn't flatten. When the index finger side of the left hand presses against the right hand, the left side of the right forearm reacts against the left hand and presses towards the left arm. This reduces arm separation; and, lays the club off in the start of the downswing. And, when the left side of the right forearm reacts against the left hand, in the start of the downswing, the muscles across the right clavicle are, also, activated. This enables the clavicle to turn through towards the target when the club starts to move back round to the ball, as it continues on its arc. (The clavicle turns through in the exact same way as it would when doing the medicine ball drill).

I think the most important part of the downswing is to keep your head over your right leg as long as possible. What are your thoughts?

Thank you BH. I commonly train my clients to feel that their head remains over their right heel during the downswing. It’s a very valuable exaggeration. ⛳️

What you didn't show in this video was the finish of the swing. One of my observations about mechanical leverage in the golf swing is that there is symmetry in how the lead arm gets pulled straight by club force in the takeaway and the Vardon style grip forces the trail arm elbow down and to external rotation and then in the finish the opposite occurs with club force being allow to pull trail arm straight and the the grip again forcing the non-load bearing arm (lead) to fold down and externally rotate. It is the folding and external rotation of the non-load-bearing arm which provides the mechanical leverage to control the path of the lead arm and club which is easily illustrated and felt by swinging the club with just one hand. A lead arm swing will be more powerful because there is the same dual lever Trebuchet like acceleration of the club head as in the two handed swing but it will be much more difficult to hit the ball consistently than a trail arm only swing in which the arm externally rotates and tucks it. What I've found in my swing is that a good post impact extension with the club head swinging out to the same spot in 3D space with club toe angled consistency with the lead arm bend down and externally rotated is the key for hitting shots as aimed consistently . So much so I now place my club in that orientation with trail arm straight and shaft out straight forward with lead arm folded and externally rotated with my feet together and turned 45° open to put my hips where they are at impact. The toe of the club angles at a 45° angle inward \ . What happens forward from that alignnment position in an actual swing is the wrist cock because club head can't go forward with the momemtum acting on the orientation of the two infuencing how the both elbows bend to allowing the club to swing back around the shoulders as lifting the trail foot allows hips to rotate 90° or more to face target or inside if target in the finish. Moving backwards from the externally rotated lead arm / straight trail arm alignment posture the club head swings vertically pulling the lead arm back out striight so both arms are straight and both hands bear the force equally then the grip causes the the trail arm to fold down and externally rotate. If you swing the club back and fourth from the point the lead arm is folded down and externally rotated with club force pulling trail arm straight to where the traii arm is down and externally rotated and force is pulling lead arm straight it is a very consistent movement due to the mechanical leverage external rotation of the non-load bearing arm creates. Bend over and let a ball get in the way and the result is very consistent ball direction. With a bit of trial and error it is possible to predict the path of the ball from where the club head winds up in the forward extension. I first noticed this being done by Harry Frankenberg (Count Yogi) in videos of his swing which always starts with him posing, gracefully, with club extened out in front of him. The club head becomes like the front side of a rifle with shots nearly as predictable 😀

@TeddyCavachon2 ай бұрын
@ Too bad because if you read it and tried it might improve your golf swing the way it did mine and others I’ve explained that cause and effect to. I did it this week with a beginner who didn’t understand the need to let his trail arm get pulled straight in the finish. Instead like a lot of beginners he bent his trail and lead elbow at the same time to swing the club around his body because unless you freeze the action of the swing or have a very sharp eye that’s what appears to be happening. But if one studies the swings of golfer like Freddie Couples and Earnie Els like I have you notice what makes their swing look so effortless is they way they let the club pull both arms straight after impact which acts like the arresting cable on the deck of an aircraft carrier to absorb the energy of the club head and slow it down by transferring the energy from the club head, through both arms, torso and legs to the ground.

This is what Hogan ,Jones,Sarazen, Knudsen and Snead did. Modern swing has more disconnect between arms and body in backswing and so you have to get deeper on downswing, with danger that you get stuck inside the plane.
@johnnyparker99282 ай бұрын
My take is hit balls until they go where you intend for them to then you can play golf.
