This Magic Left Elbow Move Is The Best Ball Striking Tip I've Ever Received!

This is perhaps the best ball striking tip I've ever received! Aligning and moving the left elbow like this was a game-changer.

I was very fortunate starting out in this game to have such a strong, impactful voice in my Dad. He gave me great fundamentals for my golf swing that correlated with my baseball roots. One of those key, I would consider, "magic" matchups was the left arm (or lead arm) and how the left hand grip, left elbow, arms and shoulder all aligned. I believe this created a sort of power line.
This position at the onset allowed me to swing just like I would in baseball, or when throwing a frisbee, or making similar athletic movements. While many instructions in the past (including Ben Hogan and his 5 lessons book) may have eluded to a more externally rotated lead arm at setup, video and photos of Mr. Hogan, and many other greats tend to show a more internally rotated lead arm as I point out in this video. To me this is a much more powerful structure and alignment, aligning with other sports, and allows you to truly swing and spring the lead arm versus forcing it. This also aligns with my general opposition of lowering and pulling down the arms to start the downswing, a move I generally see ruin a natural swing and arc.

Milo: This video has cured my inability to get my right elbow on my right hip early in the downswing to swing from the inside while using my strong grip! I have tried off and on for 2 years but could not create any room in my downswing for the right elbow. Your tips of keeping left arm higher and wider, plus bending over more at waist instead of early extending, have worked for me. Thanks

Very useful esp as I’m a lefty playing golf right handed, ( as do a couple of my friends). All the trail arm stuff may be useful to most folk as they are right arm dominant , so it’s great to see some left arm tuition as us lefty/righties can really and easily use this stuff. Thanks Milo! Hitting with one arm drills have helped me a bunch. I find it way harder to hit with lead arm than trail arm but it seems essential to get that down. The thing those drills have taught me the most is how to step into lead foot and where the butt of the club flips over. It flips pretty much the same spot for each arm alone, and that felt like I found a secret to “going with the flow” and not fighting the club.

Great demo of this key move Milo. The great Mike Austin used to refer to it as "swinging the 7" created by the left arm and shoulders without pulling the arms. When you have this intention your entire body handles the load and you truly begin to know what it feels like to rotate through a shot!

Milo, In your practice swings , you show your body has rotated substantially open before you would even be making contact with the ball. This is exemplified, for example, at frame 5:58. Your left cheek is already far to the left of your right cheek before impact. Yet, in the actual swing, for example at frame 6:05, you have made substantially less body rotation before impact. In fact, your left cheek is only slightly left of your right cheek at actual impact. Unless you want your viewers to pull their shots way to the left, I suggest you supplement your video to make clear the difference. Hope this helps! Alan

Haha, just don't overdue the single arm drills, while they are great, last thing we want is tendonitis or something. I just let students do a few with something light where they have to soften the tension levels and learn to use the system more athletically. Keep up the good work!

That left arm relationship to your body’s center/sternum is massive. Everyone’s first move off the ball the first time you swing a club has to be adduct left arm and pull right arm. Once I figured out the feel/concept of swinging the club with left arm almost abducting in backswing- staying on my left side (righty golfer) that allowed me to actually start turning my chest. Then moving through the bag, my feel anyway is, Driver my left arm is lifting in relation to my chest to 60 wedge a little bit more chop motion with left arm but not nearly the degree that my initial feel or concept was.

One great right drill is to hold the club with just your right hand; and, position your elbow in front of your hand, with the club set back back. When you get to the top start down by fully activating the muscle in the left of side of your forearm. But, funnily enough, if you place your left hand on the club, as your swing thru, your arm will always start down correctly and your right side will always swing thru correctly.

Great stuff as usual. I had that very feeling last night in my sim.. I find it's harder for me as I tend to go back to flat/low.. But when I focus on taking it more vertical (the shoulders especially: similar to Elite Golf guys teach), it kind of "automates" the tilts coming down. Starting to really make sense but still fighting a 15 year old bad backswing habit...

The position of the left elbow at address is so crucial. I see so manly players that strive to keep there elbows as close together as possible aka Hogan's famous rope picture.

It's interesting for sure, however I look at what the greats truly did in their swings, and fortunately we have plenty of clips and footage of Hogan and others that shows the lead arm more internally rotated, even at setup it really isn't rotated down and in. I've heard rumblings from many that the five lessons book wasn't 100% Hogan's truth, but not sure. Now that I use my hands correctly, I've been able to keep that right arm folding in front of my chest going back and I've been working on letting the momentum of the club supinate my right forearm automatically in transition. And for a while it's felt like i had to almost wipe my left arm up through the strike because of how far I use to get my arm structure behind me. But I'm very close now and hopefully this will help me at the range today because I still hit too many toed hooks.

milo, i've been golfing for a long time and from my own experience and by watching fellow golfers it seems the bane of the majority is this standing up early extension thing and it's difficult for me to figure the bottom line cause and effect of it. it sort of seems like the golfer is either springing up to gain power for the shot or maybe bracing against the ground with the body for the hit and then the arms and hands kinda get blocked out with the body in the way. do you have any insight on this.

Depends on the player and their matchups. I have a stronger lead hand grip and tend to recommend that to my students, so not much is required. I am also not opening the face in these movements. I'm a lefty but golf right and a lot of the time I use more of a pulling action with the left side but when this leaves me for a while I can go to more of a right side hitting action. I tend to switch around maybe too much and there lies a problem for me.

Hogan like Speith and Morakawa was left handed playing right! so could get away with a weak left hand unlike majority of golfers i play with! ie a stupidly weak left hand and usually a strong right

Hey Milo- So for matchups inorder to get the trail elbow working under the lead(more efficient) the matchup would be internally rotating the lead and external the trial at address. Otherwise if you have both external it would counter act each other? I know you like a steep back swing to shallow. But would the matchup still be the same IF the back swing is more neutral keeping the trail external throughout? DJT2024

While his book may not be 100% accurate to what Hogan did or said, his swing and ball striking is still a sight to behold and a lot can be learned. He’s a poor example for anyone, regardless of skill level. He had injuries that forced him to swing the way he did, and he practiced so much that he got very good at it. No current tour pros that I know of play with clubs as flat as his were, and therefore don’t swing as flat as he did. Swing your swing and figure out how to make it fly how you want
