Which do you think is better. Canvas paper or watercolor paper.
@janeslocomb40502 жыл бұрын
I have found a way to stop buckling without the problem of having too much water on the paper interfering with the paint. I dip the paper into a pan of water, let it drip off for a minute, then lightly dry off with a paper towel. It is still wet enough not to buckle but has no visible water and it also helps with the problem of the paper sticking badly to the mat while drying. It will still need to be loosened carefully while wet from the mat but does not stick so badly. I use a wide dry wall knife to separate the pour from the silicone mat. It also dries faster. I normally use 100 - 140 either cold press or smooth water color paper. As I stated in another comment it does not dry flat so I press the dried pour. I've also changed the dry press method a little. I use sheetrock panels. The painted side faces down on the shiny paper that laminating sheets come on The paint does not stick to these, then paper towels on top of the unpainted side, sprayed to dampness, then a top layer of sheetrock and a couple of gallons of floetrol or whatever giving pressure. I get great results.

Thanks so much Jane. I appreciate that tip. I started laying a silicone pad on my grate so it wouldn't stick also.

David I'm sorry I didn't find the video where you surely explain the reason why it is important to put paint on the corners of the canva could you tell me? Thank you
@LeftBrainedArtist3 жыл бұрын
When you tilt the paint comes at the corner in a circular fashion. That means as it hits the corners you lose a TON of paint of the side. If you have a little "guide" paint on the corner the tip of the tilting paint runs faster than the rest and you don't lose as much off the edge.

I used masking tape to tape my water colour paper to hardboard. Do you think that would work? I have lots and lots of watercolour colour paper
@LeftBrainedArtist3 жыл бұрын
It could definitely help Roberta. I've seen quite a few artist's do that with great affect. You might put a piece of double sided tape in the middle too for some additional support.. The problem is when the paper gets wet and absorbs the water is starts to curl. You can't get all the curl out but you can definitely minimize it.

Is there a way to not ruin the back of the paper when you remove it so i can use the whole paper as a Birthday card by folding it

Let it dry on a silicone matte so that it peels up easy.

Hey thank you! I was thinking the same about practicing on canvas, just accumulating tons of finished practice runs I just don't have the space but I love the idea of paper pouring! I am wondering if I can use Acrylic paper? I tried mixed media paper and the dried results looked chalky. I also am wondering if you bind together all of the pour paper one finished or what you do with them? Do you frame any? Thank you!
@LeftBrainedArtist3 жыл бұрын
All papers are going to look a bit more matte when dry I have found. I have used a spray varnish to bring back the color vibrancy and tne used these as framed pictures, I have cut them up for bookmarks, and I have sued them for collages and other project too. They make great cards also.

I was thinking if you used watercolour paper that is small enough to put in a scrapbooking album, you could add the recipe beside it for future reference.
@ItsLaurenE3 жыл бұрын
@@virginiaandsarah yes this!! I keep jotting down notes into random planners, but would love to dedicate one of my happy planners into a swatch and recipes notebook and or take wet and dry pics and note any mishaps or triumphs. I once went in a crafters rant titled So you Bought a Box of Resin... regarding how it isn't that easy. I can relate several pouring concepts with my years with resin, while other times I feel like i could wright a rant called I bought some paint to pour 🤣😂 so many learning curves.

@@ItsLaurenE David has said in the past that it's important to keep a journal about very recipe you've tried with it's pros and cons.Meanwhile I have tons of notes from all the how-to videos I've watched. Some of those recipes needed to be tweaked; maybe because of the particular brand or type of paint, altitude, humidity, room temperature during the pour and curing, filtered water vs. distilled water, with or without Floetrol, varnish vs. resin, etc. Very helpful when wanting to replicate a pour.

As an Art Major - the concept of wetting your paper first is called - in watercolor terms - is wet on wet. Wet paint on wet paper =)

Good to know. I haven't really thought of it in watercolor terms. I was just trying to contain my warping.

Totally fascinating and informative! I was watching this on my tablet and found myself wanting to tip the screen as you were tipping the paper on the rack - LOL!!! 3 questions: 1. I noticed you didn’t use the torch on these. Is there a reason for that? 2. Have you ever finished a piece on paper, e.g., varnished it and if yes, how did it turn out? What are the implications of adding this additional layer to paper? And finally, 3. I would love to see an instructional video on preparing larger quantities of paint, e.g., for the squirt bottles - what is the process for doing that, and what are the challenges and things one needs to be aware of? Thanks!!
@LeftBrainedArtist4 жыл бұрын
1. It is paper, albeit wet paper at the end, and I just didn't want to risk unwanted fire. I usually use my heat gun on paper pours but I didn't have it handy. 2. The second layer doesn't affect the paper itself. I is already covered with dried acrylic so it doesn't buckle anymore. You do want to flatten it out before you put a top coat on unless you use a spray. The rest would have to be very thin or they would drip. 3. Getting the same consistency with a larger stirring stick can be a pain. Large quantities flows off the stick differently. Otherwise it is pretty much the same on a larger scale.

Canvas board? You can. They will warp also. You can pour directly on canvas too but you can't move it till it dries and it will bleed through without a sealing coat first.

Have you ever used Bristol Board paper? I had to buy a pad of Bristol Board paper for a class - which I dropped prof was horrible) - but I bought 2 (2 for 1 coupon) - and I now have 2 pads in my closet doing nothing. Will it work for this ???
@LeftBrainedArtist4 жыл бұрын
I honestly had no idea what that was. It looks like it is slightly thicker than mix media and thinner than watercolor paper. It would probably work but you'll want to secure it to something so it doesn't warp as much. Even very thick watercolor paper warps a bit.

I never thought to practice ahead of time on paper even though I have used paper to use up leftover paint. I love these brilliant colors, normally I am not into orange but this is really nice. I have practiced on canvas board and the board lands up curling or warping. I have a really nice painting which is really warped. How to avoid that? I like spraying paper things with spray bottle of water. I save any pretty box from cosmetics or apple devices, nice boxes, and I dip them into the leftover paint splatters. Shoe boxes come out really nice especially if they are nice quality to begin with. It's just for fun to use up the excess.
@LeftBrainedArtist4 жыл бұрын
You can't avoid warping on canvas panels or paper. For canvas panels you can straighten it out by putting freezer paper above and below the completely dry and cured painting and then putting it on a flat surface under something heavy (books etc.) Takes a few days and that will straighten it out nice. Test your freezer paper on a throw away panel before doing one that you really love. Don't overdo the weight as it can compress the dried paint and cause issues. Some people wet the back of the panel slightly beforehand but I haven't had to do that.

I’ve been saving those nifty boxes one gets that have the tops with closures. I’ve attached watercolor paintings to them in the past, sprayed them with a protective finish and sent them off with gifts inside. The post office workers always comment that they might get marks on them from the machines they’ll go through. I just say, “it’ll add to the reality of life that this box has lived through”. I have a friend that has kept one such box for close to 15 years. She doesn’t remember who gave it to her, but she keeps her treasures in it. People at the care facility say that it brings her joy whenever she takes it out of the drawer. So, always share your artwork, even those pieces we think aren’t all that great, the beauty as well as the enjoyment belongs to the recipient. These were two very interesting pours!
