This animation was done for Aberystwyth University's Sports Science Department, in collaboration with Dr. Marco Arkesteijn, to help students visualise the complex interaction of muscles in the leg during walking. The data used to make this animation was generated in the department's high-tech motion capture suite. Discover fabulous resources about how to create media in education and examples from across Welsh Universities at www.cadarn.ac.uk.

love how you can watch the energy transfer from the glute down to the calf.

Getting close, but I want to see a more detailed sequence of how the individual muscles work together. Maybe a color change to show intensity of contraction.

Front muscles are stabilising muscles. The rear muscles are responsible for forward propelling...

The faster you move the more dominant the hip flexors become with propulsion. But propulsion is a manifestation of gravity as well, especially slow walking with a bit of a forward lean. Depends alot on the individuals body type though.

No, in fact the muscles most involved in walking are the four muscles of quadriceps, the large fleshy muscle group covering the front and sides of the thigh. It has four parts: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius.

Yeah, apart from iliopsoas, which is the first muscle which is activated for forward propelling (and the only one from front muscles)

Two things: The right arm and left leg are connected during walking and running. 2nd: would be wonderful if you rendered at 180 fps so we could watch in slo-mo very cool start wonder what 9 years could produce today?

Did you notice the negative contraction of the tibialis anterior at the moment the heal hit the floor to control the lowering of the sole so as not to slap on the ground quickly.

Very good animation! Shouldn't the hamstrings also activate to some degree to flex the knee right after the foot leaving the ground? (after the calves plantarflexing the ankle?)

I was taught that it is hip flexion momentum that causes the knee flexion and not the hamstrings during the swing phase.

Watching this to understand what is causing me pain during walking. The pain is located behind my calf at the extension start and stops as i flex. Basically i have nerve issues but i also think my glutes and or hamstrings are transferring too much power to a weaker calf which is straining it.

Not all pain is bad micro tears happen when you use your muscle in hard or new ways and makes it so that you're growing stronger just rest in between or use wraps

It looks unreal because the pelvis floor, the ischium and pubis, are not moved to push the torso to advance forward. By the way, the active leg should be rolled outward, the hip should sit back because the curvature of the hermus.

I cannot believe this, I walk , speed walking daily,... and calves are very developed yet my hamstrings muscles...which I se in this video as active more than the calf...my hamstrings muscles are way underdeveloped and I have seen no improvement in over two years of speed walking. This cannot be right. I am a heal to toe balanced walker, fyi.
@Mrwiseguy101690
@Mrwiseguy101690 7 жыл бұрын
That means you got stronger. Speed walking won't cut it anymore for developing huge muscles like the hamstrings. I recommend you take on sprinting. I'm a sprinter myself and after workouts (just sprinting, no weights or anything), my hamstrings are on fire and sore for a day or two. Not to mention sprinting is really good for fat loss and developing a healthy body. I went to a cardiologist and he said it's extremely rare for me to have any heart problems anytime in the future.
