Thank you for your talk Col Malan , most people today will never understand what an honour to serve , what sacrifices were made between 1975 and 1988 there about , as national servicemen we became the well structured Citizen Force your talk certainly covered exactly my experience in my military career.

Interesting video interview, thank you for preserving this military history. The weapon not mentioned is artillery, which now seems so prominent in battles. Did artillery not play a role or would this be an idea for a separate interview?

Excellent interview. Anytime I had heard of this man was when he was being criticised at the battle of Chambinga. I always thought he got more blame than he deserved. This interview showed him as a competent leader and someone who knew his job.

Col Malan said all teachers were sent to SA Infantry school for training. Would be great to hear more about this aspect.

Although not mentioned often - this era of operation in SWA/Angola was conducted without GPS so finding places in the bush with few landmarks was difficult and required some familiarity.

When counting numbers - both strengths and casualties- the UNITA contribution is often dismissed. Why is that? The nuclear capability was kept secret, so how was that an effective deterrent?

The UK and USA knew about it, so when the politicians that spoke especially PW Botha said we will use everything to our disposal to safeguard our country they knew not to push further.

@Charles Manning - The nuclear weapons program was an open secret - everyone knew - same as with Israel today. Also, I think, the SADF had a fearsome reputation if on the other side of the barrels. UNITA deserves more attention on this channel, working on it, Koos

@@LegacyConversations Yes, the nukes were a bit of an open secret. They were never officially acknowledged. I spent 2 years in Army HQ in 84/5. Lots of loose talk about many things, but I never heard one mention of nukes. I suppose that it is also quite likely that while the general population was kept uninformed the nukes could have still been talked about at the diplomatic level. There were many things kept secret from us such as the involvement of the CIA in Angola. The UNITA conversations will be interesting.

And unfortunately the current war, and South Africa is at war, is still all about the minerals, just clouded in some nonsense about African politics, or some such. Read the book “The Looting Machine” by Tom Burgis, and weep, as I wept when I read it….
