3x model size means 3x as many parameters (weights) in the end-to-end neural network. Parameters or weights are the data values that are tweaked by "training" and are the encoding of what the model has learned. It is a rough measure of the model's power (complexity of problem it can potentially solve), larger models are also easier to train while being less efficient (and obviously requiring more memory) at inference time. But keep in mind that the structure (architecture) of how the parameters are used in the model is very relevant to how effectively the parameters themselves are used. This is, by the way, the opposite of scaling down to "fit" in HW3. 3x model context length almost certainly refers to the number of prior frames of video used as raw input to the pipeline from photons to controls. Analogous to LLM 'context window" which is the number of word(tokens) an LLM processes in a single run in order to predict a single next word (token). An important difference with LLMs is that FSD is not only predicting future frame(s) of video(world model) but also generating a plan and desired control outputs in order to achieve that plan. This larger context window likely goes hand-in-hand with the 3x parameters, but the two are not inherently linked. But the easiest way to hand 3x larger raw input is to have (at least) 3x the internal parameters for the model.

80% of all Tesla’s have hardware 3 installed or about 5,700,00 vehicles. So the vast majority of us are being left out of these V13 updates. Started beta testing for Tesla in 2019. Spent $8000 for FSD on our Model 3 and another $10,000 for FSD on our Model Y. Musk has stated that V13 “may not work” on HW3. So what’s up with this? Either send us an $18,000 refund for the product that only has partial utility or upgrade our cars to hardware that works with V13. Musk could pay for all this from his $400 billion he has and that would only be a rounding error for him. I am sure I am not the only one, of the 80% Tesla owners, with HD3, that is thinking this way? Maybe there should be a social media effort to get Tesla to commit to a solution?
