These images are absolute American treasures!!! I truly wish that that era of the 1850's through early 1900's had been MY era!!!! I was meant to have lived during those times! I wish with all my heart that I could have traded places with my great grandmother!!!

You mean in the times when genocide of indigenous people was over so they started killing each other in the Secession War ?

When my sister and I visited Tombstone it was exciting to ride inside a stagecoach. I would like to experience being with a covered wagon train group ☺️! Thanks again for taking me back to the Wild West Era, I will never get tired of it.

Love the music. I saw a lot of sod houses. My great-grandfather was a homesteader, and was a Civil War veteran. His homestead was in western KS, so he had a sod house, originally. Became very successful and proved up his claim.

Excellent selection of the true west photographs. To many times I've heard people romanticize Life in The West which of course flies in the face of reality. Hollywood has been a major culprit in advancing this false notion. Anytime someone takes the job to produce and directing an old west film they should review this valuable material. Thank you so much for gathering this photos and sharing them.

I always judge a Western first by the hats. The real hats weren't very flattering compared to Hollywood's versions. I think it's getting better since younger directors are aware of these type pictures thanks to videos like this now available to the general public. Plus the value of authenticity in the story telling. Now to convince the actors that they have to wear authentic frumpy looking hats. Good luck. Second I judge a Western by the holsters which look nothing like the Hollywood version either. But that's another story for another day.

Hollywood has glamorised the west but it had to be a hard life for everybody including the animals - and the women wore those stupid victorian dresses which must have been a pain to move in. The women should have been wearing trousers like the men did and put the cloth to better use.

Sun Set That sun still sets in the west But that old trail is asphalt now Baked by the sun hot and dry The sounds of hoofs have passed Herds of buffalo graze no more Barbwire strung along The fence post passed like a picket fence As the truck tires whine on The sweetgrass has all but gone The mesquite is tall and thick Prickly Pear covers the prairie The Longhorns have gone A saddle all covered in dust The moth-riddled blanket flaps Riding quirt amiss Old spurs hung on a wall On a post hangs a leather belt With a holster cracked and rotting That old hogleg turned brown Brass all green The lassoing cowboy is no more That broad hat tipped back His shirt sleeves rolled high Jeans rolled double His hair thinned and gray High cheekbones darken Bull hide tough Hand scars a many With eyes squinting A straw chair leaned back Daydreaming No more round ups That last ride was long ago With a rolled cigarette on his lip His words in a low key That sun still sets in the west Barry 4/3/2023
