I've been living in China for the past 7 years, and have recently tripped across these great videos. This one was pretty sobering, for two reasons. First, because the truth sometimes hurts, and it can also be ugly (i.e., the ultra-Nationalism). And second, reflecting upon a few incidents/happenings in which I've been involved, I now realize how close I've come to landing in serious trouble due to both my imprudence and occasional hot temper.

@0kasede08 жыл бұрын
All foreigners regardless of nationality MUST KNOW THE LOCAL LAW. Law in China is not as what you just described. I'm going to explain more and hope it'll help foreigners living alone in China. First of all, you're correct on the fact that local police doesn't like to get involved with a foreigner. Because they have no jurisdiction right to get involved. It's the Judicial Police who only have the right to handle incidents with foreigners. Keep this in mind and declare your nationality right away and request the Judicial Police (it's pronounced "Si Fa Jing Cha" or "Si Jing" for short). Also, since the local police cannot handle foreigner case, your passport will be turned over to the Judicial Police by law. Second, always keep your embassy phone number saved on your phone (all of the embassies representing your nationality in China, cause you might have to try more than one to get through) and know their business hour and emergency contact. All foreign embassies will have emergency contact. At the first sign of police involvement, call your embassy. For extra sense of security, also save the phone number from an allied country embassy. Third, China has civil law just as we do in the US. If you sustained physically injury, go to the hospital and have them check up on those injury and write a report. This will be your evidence! Depending on whether you want to pursue legal action, you'll want to file a police report just like in the US or any other western countries if you want to pursue legal action. This is your second piece of evidence. Ultimately, you'll have to decide whether to get a lawyer and press charge. If your angry girlfriend/mistress/whatever you call her do come after you with police, you might just have to press charge. For 40,000RMB you can get a decent lawyer already. For legal justice involving foreigner, it'll be handled by the superior court than the local people's court. China's very specific about handling issues that involving a foreigner, it must be handled by the higher judicial system that was designated for from the police to the court. This branch of the system is under the foreign affairs branch and are the only ones authorized to handle cases involving foreigners. There are specific law defining compensation for injuries done to the local or a foreigner. In your friend's case that bite with flesh off entitles him to a decent amount payment of around 10,000RMB or 20,000RMB (price varies depending on the city, and that was many years ago). If charges were pressed onto the girl, he has all the right to ask for all compensation, including emotional trauma, punitive damage, etc. just like in the US. Final thought. There's a strange custom in China among young couple in a relationship where the man gives the women these goodwill: 1. relationship establishment goodwill(can be gift, price varies, depends on your negotiation) 2. break up goodwill(can be gift, price varies, depends on your negotiation) 3. abortion goodwill(can be gift, price varies, blah blah blah) 4. divorce goodwill(can be gift, same old blah blah blah) Westerners rarely break off a relationship until their partner found out about the cheating, so use your man charm to reduce as much damage as possible before it gets out of hands. Just like you said that you can't vouch for your friend's action, which leads to total destruction plus now he has to get an attorney. Do not ever underestimate Chinese girls. Competition for a good man is so fierce that they have 10x sharper senses than you do. Always memorize point #1, it'll still get you free and you can make calls for help. Then evaluate the rest of the points above and make a decent decision. It has nothing to do with the girl having some kind of secret agreement with the local police. The local police are more afraid of you as soon as you request for the Judicial Police. Lastly, I know many single man enjoys a good company while living in China. But take responsibility in your own action and not breaking a girl's heart left and right like a Chip'n'Dale. No women from anywhere on this earth like to be cheated, just as is for men. Chinese girls are still very traditional and dead serious in committing to marry you and spend the rest of her life with you. Most of them will send half of the money back home to their parents from the tradition to take care of the parents. Hope this can help for those living overseas, and I truly wish nobody has to run this procedure at all. Learn the local law and culture as fast as you can. Enjoy and stay safe.

Perhaps. I do know that there are not a lot of members of the Communist party in China, but they do not make it obvious and watch a lot. I learned this in a class I took on China I took in college. I also had two Chinese roommates. They were awesome roommates. We got along great. One night as we were eating homemade Chinese food, I started talking about the third wave and Democracy in China. I also mentioned the 1989 protests. One of my roommates got very quiet and observant. The other roommate was nervous. Bear in mind, we were in America. The nervous roommate said that all that matters is that you eat. I could tell that I was putting him in a bind, so I did not press the issue out of respect for him.

here's my story !! I was speaking to the police in the subway asking for directions when this guy (it was obvious that he was trying to practice English) came up to me offering help and I told him very politely : " I can speak Chinese" but than he got upset and said that I should have thanked him cause that's the right way to behave !! I got offended and said : "what are you gone teach me manners now ?!" or smth like that and the guy started shouting telling everyone "this foreigner is unpolite, doesn't respect Chinese people and was not letting me get directions or anything just attracted a crowd and the police kind of surrounded us for protection ! I kept saying to him what the hell do you want from me go away but he would not let it go so since I was in a rush I got out of the subway and then came back after a while and asked for information again ! that was a scary situation imagine if no police around...! Now some might think that maybe I should have let it go from the start since I know the nationalism problem but the thing was that in 10 years in China never have I seen this kind of behavior towards foreigners and to say the truth that's when I felt the nationalism rise for the first time cause up til then this kind of situation was absurd to even think of so it caught me by surprise...

Honestly, there is something weird with the first story. While I agree with that the girl has the better home base, I usually find that the average Chinese has a very strong sense of 'fairness'. Of course she and the police think it is fair that he pays compensation. But if he and she agreed in front of the police (did they do that?) to a certain sum, then actually I would expect the police to side with him now.

"my name is john" I have noticed that a few times so far... why do Chinese people use random "western" names for themselves?
@mariahrfordays19886 жыл бұрын
lordeisschrank had a Chinese business associate of my ex boyfriend stay with us in California for a month. He went by the name “Jeffrey”, ironically enough was also my boyfriends name. I asked him why many Chinese do this and he explained that in elementary school they are told to pick a western name.
@scheimong6 жыл бұрын
It's because Chinese has plenty of consonants that are simply non-existent in English. My legal given name is Zongqi, for which the most similar English pronunciation is zth-own-chee, but z and q are technically apical and palatal affricate respectively, neither found in English. There's a neat table on Wikipedia about this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandarin_Chinese#Initials. Ultimately, Chinese is so different from all Latin and Germanic languages, that attempting to use a phonetic Chinese name as an English name just causes more trouble than using a preferred Western name. For example I can tell you verbally my name is James and you would know how it's spelled. But if I said "zth-own-chee" then I would have to spell it out for you every time, and you would have a hard time remembering it. It's easier for everyone you see.

Asians have committed the worst crimes against their own people than whites have , look at the Japanese invasion of China , or china's own communist government . Anyway I have no anamosity towards them or there culture, just stating facts about how that act sometimes when they have felt slighted in some way . We should probably pull our military out of South Korea they are big enough to support themselves, plus just like China they have a habit of blaming the US as a way of distracting their own population from internal problems , a lot of countries do the same thing .

Anthony oliver when did you exactly get beaten up by 20-30 koreans? where did it happen? as a korean myself, this kind of 'mob' behaviour resulting in physical violence is unheard of all my life, unless you encountered some kind of underground gangsters, then I am not too sure. were you drunk, fighting in night club in Seoul? another thing... don't spread rumours that koreans are hostile to America or American. there are tons of people who appreciate America's help during the war and current military Base in Korea and we feel responsible for so many losses of young soldiers, America did not have to help us but America and many countries did it for us. We don't blame America for anything, maybe other Asian countries obviously. quite opposite, we have so much influence in Korea from USA. At this point without any court testimony this is basically a he said she said story. In the U.S., during a domestic dispute, if a man gave the woman a black eye he would be handcuffed and taken to jail. Charges for domestic violence will definitely be filed. If the woman acted out of control he should call the police instead of resorting to physical violence, which under the law is a no-no. However, there will not be a meeting for private settlement with regards to financial compensation. This would be treated solely as a criminal case. Now, if you are a foreigner living in the U.S., then in certain instances you will find yourself in big trouble by mere accusation alone if an American citizen filed a police report against you even in the absence of physical evidence. The police will come and arrest you, bring you to the police department for fingerprinting and mugshot and then lock you up. Then you will have to appear in court where your fate is at the mercy of the judge. Then days later the immigration department will follow suit. You will be put in orange jump suit, handcuffed and chained like a most wanted violent criminal and taken to a solitary confinement unit of the prison. Then you will face the immigration judge in whom your fate will be determined. Should I be doing a KZbin video on that based on what I had gone through? Nope. Because such anecdotal experience may not be the representation of what is happening in the culture of the whole system of the large nation. It will merely draw out the racial bigots who have no basis except generalized hatred into the comment section.

Let me summarize the whole video: 1. Foreign guy cheats on Chinese girlfriend, gets his property destroyed, his arm bitten, however has to pay her 40k yuan. She wants him in jail so to scare him and milk him. Moral of the story: DON'T CHEAT. 2. Mexican girls gets stalked, Chinese authorities don't care, she insisted and got the police guys to call the stalker and stop him. Moral of the story: when dealing with local authorities, INSIST. 3. Serpentza got a foot massage, his friend wanted sexual services but got any and leaves the place, however Serpentza had to pay 50 yuan for his foot massage + the 200 yuan non fuck of his friend. He confronts the staff, insult one of them, the whole China got offended, the mob beat the hell out of him, but police saved him and agreed he was right. Moral of the story: DON'T INSULT A CHINESE. 4. Random Chinese guy appears in the video with nothing to say, but stays making the final minutes of the videos awkward-hilarious. Moral of the story: BE FRIENDLY.

Listen, all foreigners. Chinese people treat LOVE and FAMILY very seriously. It is not like the western way of dealing with love. For us Chinese, adultery is absolutely unacceptable for both man or woman hence in some areas like Taiwan the adultery is illegal still. Sometimes women may have inordinate actions but it is a signal shows that she cares about you deeply instead of hating you. Love and marriage are heavy. They mean a lot even everything for the Chinese. Once the realtionship is established, be responsible for everything. If you have made any mistake, any rational explanation won't work. So be careful.

This video is giving the absurd impression that how he acted was the only way to handle this situation, which is quite a harmful opinion to spread. Paying some arbitrary amounts, not contacting the embassy/consulate and not hiring a lawyer is the dumbest thing he could possibly have done! What the police station is doing is illegal because no lawsuit has been filed (clearly according to the details), and the mediator game by police is a well know extortion/corruption scheme here. Obviously, he should simply threaten the police department to involve the embassy of his home country, who are very active in returning illegally confiscated passports, and should have hired a lawyer if they would still have kept his passport.
@sebastiantill80198 жыл бұрын
+Larkhill21 Assistance in such a situation is very specifically a task of an embassy/consulate. We are not talking about legal service here, but the illegal confiscation of a passport which is property of the home country. All the details in the story are indicating that the "police station" is playing the typical abuse of power in it's role as a mediator in private disputes, to which the parties in the conflict may or may not volunteer to listen to according to Chinese law. Paying anything and not contacting the embassy/consulate and not hiring a lawyer is the dumbest thing he could possibly have done! This video is giving the absurd impression that how he acted was the only way to handle this situation, which is quite a harmful opinion to spread.
@sebastiantill80198 жыл бұрын
***** No, that's not "my way", but the only sensible way. Paying some high arbitrary amounts for compensation in this case, is simply dumb. I have no idea what "meals" you are talking about!
@tunmanc8 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Till...YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE LAW THERE, It's not illegally confiscated passports WHEN A LAW IS ALREADY BROKEN BY That man. One simple question, DID HE HIT THE WOMAN, YES. LAW IS Broken, not even the Embassy can save you from that FACT. Embassy can save you if you didn't broke any law, but since he started a domestic dispute problem, and get into a moral issue of cheating...Embassy can't do much, they can provide a list of lawyers...but GOOD LUCK...now You paying her family, her lawyer, and your lawyer, so instead of paying her family $8000 US Dollar, you will pay whatever the lawyer is charging you, which probably is at least 10x more than $8000. Going to court, I'm pretty sure the man is going to LOSE the case. Why he will lose in court? Because the whole thing happened because he cheated, it's what started the whole problem, so he's the main source of problem...most Chinese who heard of this story will think the man is in the wrong, so the Judge will have no exception...also if he favorite the Foreigner, then the JUDGE himself will lose his job because he just make Chinese people lose face by saying it's OK for Foreigner to cheat on Chinese woman. Learn about the local culture, don't make foolish mistake, cheating in itself is a moral issue, but it makes lots local people angry, and many of them (especially Chinese man don't like Foreigner taking their woman in country where man out number woman greatly.) So she's backed by her locals and her country. No way he's gonna win.
@sebastiantill80198 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, you need to show them your passport and try to be cooperative if you want to avoid trouble. However, nothing you have stated is contradicting to the matter of fact that no one should ever settle with the abuse of power by the PSB, unless it's about a true triviality. Contrary to what you (and the video author) believe, the legal system in China is a solid basis to handle matters like this case. A simple call to the embassy/consulate would probably already caused the return of the passport. If this wouldn't have happened, then he could have hired a lawyer for a fraction of the arbitrary blackmail "settlement", which in turn would have forced the girl to either file a lawsuit or to drop the case. A lower degree of rightfulness in Chinese law isn't changing this fact. Contrary to what most people believe, China is not a legal Wild West anymore and things have changed drastically. Samples of cases of injustice don't change the fact that he should have called the embassy and hired a lawyer.
@sebastiantill80198 жыл бұрын
tunmanc Slow down cowboy! You clearly don't get trivial facts straight. The situation he is in now is clearly showing that he should have called the embassy and hired a lawyer, which would have come out much cheaper, because obviously no lawsuit would have ever been filed/accepted in this case. Cheating on a girlfriend and having a minor domestic violent fight without a clear aggressor will certainly not land you in court, regardless what flashy rumors you have heard when gulping down Tsingtao with your laowai mates.
