As a former high school drama troupe director: THANK YOU for letting your (older) kids do adult material! I always pushed as far as I could for my students (who were mostly 16-18) to do material that was considered a little mature or advanced for them...and it prepared them for their careers as actors! Casting directors and producers always seek out performers who have mature experience, and many high school students miss out on developing that maturity when they're forbidden to tackle any material like this. To the director and producer: Your troupe is EXCELLENT, very professional for their age, and handle the material like they've been doing it for years. Brava.
@maribeld844 жыл бұрын
I also teach school drama. For me it's not that the higschoolers can't handle it, it's more that the audience is their parents and younger siblings. I always felt the school show should be a family friendly event. Drama class in contrast is free game for more adult material.
@piercerose55924 жыл бұрын
as a person who was going to do legally blonde as their first musical (unfortunately cancelled because of coronavirus) i definitely can say that i would’ve loved to do a more mature version than the jr version. our director wanted to do the original version but the principal pushed for it to be the jr version :(
@Ellie-ln8sc4 жыл бұрын
@@maribeld84 I'm in high school and I'm not sure if this a bit a weird to say to a teacher but the reason for wanting to do more adult material is to get used to it and to have more experience with it

@@Ellie-ln8sc I completely respect that, and again, in class, that's totally fair game. I was talking about being aware of your audience. If you want to do a more mature production and invite just your grade, or just the highschool, that's cool too. Forgive me, I teach k-5, so I'm a bit more sensitive to subject matter. I'd love to transition to highschool some day and do more meaty stuff :-D

I think an argument could be made to the fact that being a character is much easier than being yourself. You know how the character will turn out, their character is developed, and you truly get to know them. It's much harder being yourself when so much is unknown. But a point well made regardless.

Little detail I caught that I love and I think really speaks to all the actors in this show really knowing their characters: when Elle proposes to Emmett, in the background you can see Elle’s dad taking his wife’s drink and downing the whole ass thing in one go. This production is so, SO good. I have never seen such an amazing high school production of Legally Blonde, and I’ve seen a LOT. The two leads, especially, are incredibly well cast. The expressions at 'Legally Blonde' were spot on, he manages to hit the right points that make Emmett, while keeping his rendition fresh. This Paulette was so charming and adorable, I didn't skip 'Bend and Snap' this time. When I saw Elle's face, I knew that this was an Elle Woods face. And her vocals were gorgeous too! Brooke had a few mic issues, but pulling off 'Whipped Into Shape' it not a feat, and I loved the 'Delta Nu' part. Callahan, Warner, Vivian, brought out the meanness in these characters. Even the supporting cast, how in the zone the boys were in 'Gay or European', the Greek chorus, the judge, the Parda people in 'What You Want', the harmony in 'Welcome to Harvard Law'... you all worked together to make an immersive story, while reinventing the characters. My love to all the people who worked in this, you all are so talented and have so bright futures.
