sorry i forgot an example for one of nussbaums self-explanatory posits: "... it is important for a good life to be able to live your life till the end and not to die before..." (quote nussbaum). thank you i didn't know that :D no one should get paid for such a conclusion.

So are you saying life is fair? I dont think it is. But I also dont think we have to let it be that way, left to nature's luck; and it's at this point that I'll criticize the advantages I was given, not on merits, but on my luck, geographically at birth. It's in this root that I find myself leaning towards social democracy; besides other things, like building better citizens, etc. Note i use the term better only in the sense that i think certain education is important for good citizenship.

i hope i got everyth. right. english isn't my first language. you are criticizing that it is unfair to be born into advantages others don't have?like born in social democracy with the ability of high education and not in a developing country?well, thats not unfair that is just a fact you never be able to change. life isn't unfair.but the people which were born into advantages are behaving unfair. if they don't care about others which doesn't have your mentioned advantages.thats a big difference.

What exactly is idiotic about that? Do you not think there's something unfair about being born into advantages others of the same abilities aren't?

Most people at any Ivy league university are people who have never had a "real" job. I am not in a ivy league uni, and I have never had a "real" job, and so goes for most of my fellow students. Why should I work when I don't need to work, I only want to read and write, and as long as I can I see no problem in that.

Why do so many commenters resort to ad hominim dismissals of these people? They admit coming from privilege or they stereotype Jews and this seems to instantly enable us to dismiss them altogether. Nice to be saved the trouble of thinking about complicated arguments or legal cases. Can someone talk about what moral or legal positions Nussbaum works through that are wrong and if so, how are they wrong? I don't always agree with her but my gosh, at least she's struggling with complexity.

what kind of bourgeois tartuffery is this? a discussion of justice beginning with the outrageous question: "i've had so many undeserved advantages, yachts, high society clubs, ivy league schooling --- but how do i know this social justice thing is right for me?". This is exactly the kind of waspy bullshit that discourses of 'fairness' gloss over.

You seem to have issues which cloud your judgement. You reveal a lack of sophistication and understanding of nuance and with every unhelpful and dismissive comment you make, you dig a deeper hole for yourself.

Nussbaum is very wrong on the concept of "Disgust." First of all, in order to be disgusted by something, one has to see it - so that eliminates all private, closed door forms of behavior. So the straw man she sets up here won't work. Second, if it is "public behavior," it likely does have the potential for harm - as disgust is invariably related to conceptions of ethics and morality formed by society and conscience (how many people are actually disgusted by something without some moral basis for the disgust?). Nussbaum is rather well known for her strong support for homosexual rights and her antipathy for any who disagree, writing off their objections as merely due to "disgust," as if there were no rational basis for the disgust. It's a clever tactic, but one that doesn't take much to see through.
