Recently, I've been throwing these types of exercises in whenever I get to play. The index finger string change does take a bit to get used to. Thanks very much for covering this.

Nice vid. I’ve been practicing this on a classical guitar for a few weeks now. Due to wrist surgery, I cannot use my right hand for anything but muting for a while. It’s much, much more difficult on a nylon string guitar. When I go to my electrics after practicing, the legato is easy. It’s like playing on loose rubber bands.

Something I feel should be added to this is that stretching exercises for your hand help make it feel less awkward and helps build strength in your fingers quicker. Another big part is just practicing the same pattern over and over.

Do you have an advice for string crossing at arpeggios? With sweep picking I mean. Sometimes it happens to be very noisy.

You should do something about your beard making noise when rubbing against your clothes, which makes a buzz, really comes through the lapel mic. Great vid though

Rick you should make a vid about gear; how to amplify the guitar to make legato actually sound; I cant afford an Axe fx, and with just a distortion pedal right to the amp its just a nightmare try to play other than chuck berry lousy licks

Cuentatablet236 press harder on the strings
@rockstarjazzcat7 жыл бұрын
Ironically what Rick is teaching here is, or so I've found, the key to sounding good on any rig. Setting the gear, even great gear, yeah that would be helpful. And um, pressing harder is kind of the opposite of the mechanic he teaches, isn't it? Peace out.

RockStarJazzCat I swear I tried, but is Really annoying to ''fight'' to get the notes sounding; and yes, I use minimum pressure, I try to make it as smooth as Rick, or Holdsworth. Using software in my room everything flows right, but going to a gig with just a overdrive pedal, man, its a kick on my balls

Cuentatablet236 I mute the strings lightly with my right hand, also Save some money and buy AX8

Cuentatablet236, Probably beyond the scope of Rick's thread, but I'll throw out a couple of things that have helped me. - Muting happens by whatever means necessary, be it left hand finger pads touching adjacent or the palm muting Yousef refers to. - When practicing I find a gruv gear "fret wrap" string mute critical to hearing the string attack clearly. - Holdsworth rolled off some amount of his tone and volume... Cleaning up the slop at the high end and emphasizing the mids takes away some of the fizziness in a way that allows the notes to bloom without them feeling out of control. - I try to use the minimal amount of gain necessary to get the sustain I'm looking for, but more and more that comes down to connecting string to fret just right. Two overdrive pedals at lower gain work better than one at higher. (or buy an Axe FX and get a patch from Derryl Gabel or Rick ;-) ) - I've been practicing left hand taps in place of pull-offs exclusively in the last year and it definitely helps with the precision, speed, and reduces extraneous movements that excite strings that I don't want to sound. - The "You Rock Guitar" in tap mode is a blast too (see the Tom Quayle demos if you haven't already--instant SynthAxe). I'm eternally thankful to Rick and others that the pedagogy to the next level with answers to questions (and approaches I never thought about) that have remained unanswered for decades. Don't know if my comment helps anyone, but I'd be curious to hear what ultimately resolves the problem your are struggling with when playing out. Have a great one. (long answer--apologies) Cheers, Daniel, Denver Colorado

Hey Rick! there's something that i wanna discuss with you guys. Now my problem with legato is when I Hammer On/Pull off with my pinky , my ring finger moves with it and hits another strings. I want my Pinky and Ring fingers to move separately from each other! Any Suggestions?

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we didn't have dominant left or right handedness so that my left hand was as strong as my right. This would mean that guitar playing was a whole lot easier than it really is.

Hey Rick man. This might sound like nonsense to you as it makes no sense to me but anyway, I've been practicing the shit out of el ultimo tremolo and I've got no issues with left hand position (I'm right handed) or transitions and everything to do with the left hand technique. But the tremolo :/ ... It seems that one day I'm tight as hell and other days it falls to shit and my fingers seem to be proper confused and go all over. I've never had any tuition for classical and I've only been playing nylons since I got my alhambra in march... so I'm thinking that maybe there's a very specific way to position your hand? and maybe I'm just accidentally getting it right some days and some days I'm not? can't get tuition for classical up here and KZbin vids on tremolo aren't really helping that much. its confusing and I hope that kinda makes sense. Was just wondering of you knew of why I might be having this problem. I think there must be literally an arse-hairs difference between the correct position and the wrong one? Any ideas?
