Thank you guys for this one. Kim is my "niece-in-law and her husband Scott (my nephew) is also an A-10 pilot. Both are retired Colonels now, both highly decorated pilots with 100's of missions flown in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the wisdom of our Military leaders is to retire this wonderful aircraft that has saved so many lives of our men on the ground. Colonel Kim has now written a best selling book, "Flying in the Face of Fear" and is a keynote speaker at events around the globe. I am so proud to have Kim and her husband Scott as family members and continually thank them for their service. Cheers.

It really is a wise decision in the modern battlefield. The problem is that they can't survive a modern near-peer environment. They're absolutely amazing ground attack and CAS aircraft, but they're old and need to retire. The problem is we don't have a replacement. They should have been working on one this whole time the Air Force has been trying to get rid of the A-10.
@smaug01

@@Canthus13 The Air Force is trying to rid itself of the role the aircraft fills - and you might have blamed the "Fighter Mafia" for that. But the reality has to do with $. The costs of newer systems has risen way above what the Air Force has available for the systems it has, needs, and needs to maintain or replace to stay relevant in the modern battlespace. Old or not, the design speaks for itself, but the costs of maintenance has risen significantly, and absolutely YES, one of the services should have been working on a replacement for decades!

In another interview, (it might have been 60 minutes). She went into more detail about the damage, the crew chief told her after examining it there was too much damage to repair it and they were going to scrap it. Later they had a ceremony for her. The maintenance crew, unbeknownst to her, had cut the tail number out and presented it to her. She had it in her office in the Pentagon.

Love that video. Don't think it was 60 Minutes, though because I remember it being almost an hour long. The two things that stood out from it for me were her incredible presence and charisma, and the part where she holds up a cartridge frome the plane's gun. You really don't get a sense of what that plane is until you see the size of those things (30 mm, or about 1.2 inches in diameter) and realize the plane spits them out at a rate of 3900 rounds per minute. It can kill tanks with them.

In terms of the US being the most advanced military in the world, the A10 is "outdated". For years there's been a fight to have them retired and to have another craft, specifically an F35 variant, take over the role. But it almost universally has met backlash because the A10 has earned a reputation as a lifesaver. It's flown so many effective missions and given so much support that friendly troops literally cheer when they hear that an A10 is on the way. Its value has extended beyond just military might and into the level of being a piece of equipment that strikes fear into the heart of enemies and inspires our men on the ground to fight harder.
@Blackened30

The thing is ultimately its safer to do close air support from outside Manpad or AAA range. Once upon a time that wasn't an option, you had to get down in the weeds to do the job. That hasn't been true since the first Gulf War, pods and precision weapons allow you to do the same job better from 20 thousand feet. The B-1 is one of the best aircraft in the role since it carries a huge payload, has tons of fuel and refueling capability and the speed to get where it needs to be in time to do actually do the job. The A-10 is slow and has more limited tools to do the same job. But grunts on the ground don't see that B-1 up high eliminating pockets with precision, they do see the A-10 flying 100 feet over their head when they arrive in time. The A-10 is a really amazing and cool aircraft, but now we're endangering pilots and ground troops needlessly just because the army's vision of close in support hasn't moved on with the times and capabilities.

I have strong feeling for the A10 and putting that aside, I've heard so many stories from fellow Marines about the A10 making the difference of being about to walk away or not. It has proven it's self over and over. Improve it, make it better, but don't get rid of a true winner. You could even make it RC, but are troops deserve us to keep it. The F35 and B1 have there place, but the A10 was made for what it does and does it good.
@toddbeaubien8071
@toddbeaubien8071 Ай бұрын
@@Blackened30 Nothing you said isn't true. However, the B-1 flies too high to see the enemy. Too high to see where the bomb needs to go at the moment it drops. B-1s do not drop on firefights in progress. The F-15/F-16/F-35 fly too fast and drink fuel too fast to literally get down in the dust and slow down enough to put rounds on the enemy *while they are attacking* your friendly troops. The A-10 is a unique system designed to do exactly what it does. Nothing else is designed to do what it does and nothing else *can* do what it does. They get electronics upgrades and they keep flying. Maybe somebody will design a modern replacement to do what the A-10 does - till then, we still need them.

Capt asked them to call there craft, for fear it was fighters, not close air support. The response was “Warthog, mark pos, then tuck and cover, we got you” . We popped smoke and gave info and in two passes, the day got easier for us. Marines live Warthogs and those pilots are ugly angel drivers. The A-10, which they almost retired before all this Middle East mess, showed that close air support is still needed and valuable in the USA's arsenal. My brother was an A-10 pilot (F-16's previously) and flew/patrolled the No-Fly zone after the initial aerial attacks a couple weeks later to rotate those first pilots out to give them a break. He never saw any real "action" because the first few days of the war obliterated the Iraq war machine. This story still, to this day, is a true testament to the training, courage, professionalism and determination of the USA, once we commit to something.

The A-10 is a very unique aircraft. They built the plane around the main gun so the front landing gear is actually mounted off center to make space for the gun. The gun itself is larger than a car, its a 7 barreled gatling autocannon called the Gau-8 Avenger. The a-10 was built with redundancy in mind so any part that gets blown off has a 2nd one or a backup to keep the plane flying. With a little searching you can find images of a-10’s missing engines, half their wing, missing a tailfin, or missing the entire cockpit glass that have landed safely. Its a relatively slow jet that carries more ordinance than most single seat aircraft and its very maneuverable and extremely durable. The one of a kind sound it’s gun makes is so iconic that all ground troops recognize it and it’s psychologically a morale booster. And sadly our government is removing it and not really replacing it with a aircraft with similar capabilities.

Ejecting comes with its own risks, head neck and spinal injuries for example. It's not a perfect system but it beats ending up at the bottom of your own crater. That said a pilot would have to be very motivated to want to jump out (motivations like being on fire or in an uncontrollable nose dive). In this case it sounded like she had more confidence in her landing the aircraft than that of the ejection system. Typically there are no repercussions for ejecting other than perhaps more paperwork and debriefs. Of course, if you jump out of a flyable aircraft that is a whole different story. It actually happened to an F-35 pilot who thought he had to eject and so ended up in someone's backyard. The jet continued flying for about 70 miles without him.

There are a few cases where a plane appeared to be in trouble, and ended up flying for hundreds of miles. There have been a couple that were trimmed such that when they ran out of fuel, and they happened to land in an empty field, the planes survived the landing fairly intact. I think it was the book Feet Wet where the author was in a fighter (I don't remember which one) when the alarms went off and the cockpit filled with smoke. He called out to his wingman that he was ejecting. The plane ended up flying halfway across Europe and landed in a field. He said that he was pretty proud of himself for following the procedures so well, that his kneeboard was still in the cockpit, up on the dash, on the left side, just as the checklist said it should be.

This video is a testament to her decision making and training, but especially to the redundant systems and overall design of the Hawg. The A-10 is built to withstand damage, with the engines up high and partially protected by the wings and fuselage, the fuel tanks are self sealing, and the cockpit encased in relatively impervious titanium. Warthogs have come back from missions without a wing, some without vertical stabilizers, and riddled with bullet holes.

The A-10 was designed to take hits like that and still bring the pilot back home. They knew it would be shot at a lot with the mission it was tasked to do, and put all kinds of redundancy's into it. It has triple redundant flight controls. It's landing gear is specifically designed to be deployable even without hydraulics. It can still fly even if half its tail is shot off. It also has a titanium bathtub that the pilot sits in, designed and tested to resist anti-aircraft rounds. No other plane in the U.S. inventory has pilot protection like the A-10 has. If any plane was going to bring her home after taking 100+ rounds, it was that plane.

A friend of mine was on that line when they called for help. If not for her and the other A10, I dont think they would have made it home. A few months after that he was in a Bradley when it hit a 5 barrel bomb. Lucky there was on 4 total in the troop carrier. It blew a hole thru it about 3 feet from where he was sitting. He got 34 pieces of metal thru out his legs and when he was exiting the rear door was shot 3 times. 1 lower stomach, 1 right above chest plate in shoulder, the other thru the helmet and stuck in his skull. This didnt stop him, He got to a spot and was returning fire with his gun. Finally a tank came in and blew the building up the fire was coming from. He didnt know he was even injured due to adrenaline rush. They flew him out back to base and during operation to save him, he flat lined 2 times on the table. He finally made it home months later and was ready to get back out on the front line. They said no. Medically retired him at 24. At around 35 he was on his way to work on his bike and a lady turned in from of him. He was doing 75. He didnt make it out this time. RIP JOE

I was canoeing on a river in the Adirondack Mountains. Just before entering the river from a lake, I heard a plane. I looked back and here came an A-10. The pilot was on a training run. He was flying at treetop level entering the river. As I was looking up and him, he was looking down at me. We waved to each other. I buy my K-Cups from Black Rifle Company and I really like their Blackbeard blend of dark roast coffee. It is run by veterans. There are videos about Aircraft Carriers and they also have Female Aviators

This. This right here is why we (the poor bastards on the ground) love the A-10. I can see the pilot and he can see me. Did the JTAC's radio take a hit and can't broadcast? Did the GPS batteries die on you with a fire mission in-bound? Pop smoke or hit the strobes and wave like hell if it's an A-10 or a helo. If it's not - run like hell the other direction and pray.

There's a story about a female fighter pilot (not sure the name) on Sept 11th after the towers were hit. Our country wasn't prepared and local fighters weren't armed with weapons so she and another pilot flew up to engage the hijacked airliner with the intent of ramming it with their fighter jet and ejecting.

Lt. Heather Penney flying on the wing of lead Lt. Col. Marc Sasseville. They agreed that if they had to, Sasseville would ram the cockpit to take out the controls, and Penney would ram the tail section to take out the rear control surfaces. They were never planning to eject. To hit their targets, they would have to ride it all the way in.

I worked for lockheed back in the late 90's and they hate actual A10 Wings in the musium onsite with holes in the wings that were bigger around than a human body, and they still brought the plan back home to land, and they were on both wings...Very impressive plane for sure. It has redundant everything.

I was the front seater in an AH-64 in Iraq, 2 deployments as a squadron member & the last serving in our HQ Battalion upon my promotion to Captain Close air support missions, saving American & allied lives was the honor of my life. I never thought of what I was really doing (taking human lives) but I’ve had years to come to terms with that I had a few close calls, the closest one being a mechanical issue in flight; so I never had an experience like this nor that of an infantryman but war is absolutely disgusting but being a pilot (fixed or rotary) is really an amazing feeling and one that comes w unique challenges… Strike Deep!

Be interesting to see if the new, Super A-10 they are currently testing, will live up to its namesake? Two things people don't mention, when they talk about other aircraft, taking over close air support and relying on precision munitions instead. One the cost of those munitions compared to the cost of the A-10, A-10's are incredibly cheap, relative to every other aircraft. And second, the psychological effect it has on the battlefield, and not just for US troops, but also the sheer terror it inspires in the enemy! I'll take A-10's and AC-130 gunships any day of the week for close air support, over high-altitude precision bombing.

As a door gunner in Vietnam,’66-,68 1st.Aviation bed.,I often think how vulnerable we were in those hugheys.Crewcheif &gunner wore flack jackets with a 3/4” armor chest protector.The pilots had a little bit of armor around their seats and most laid their flack jackets done in the chin bubble,that was it.The pilots were usually unarmed,me and the crew chief of course had our .60s( stripped down,no bipod ,unmounted and no butt plate,receiver capped off with sheet metal.laid down sideways on my forearm (lefty)grabbing the pistol grip ,right hand on the plastic barrel guard B3 can feeding the ammo ,it was the perfect setup.I also started carrying frags after Tet,just in case we had to fight on the ground.150 combat missions.

I think it also requires the ability to stay calm and focused. I was in a very dangerous situation in a car my friend was driving. We wound up facing on coming cars on a highway and she was crying and getting a little hysterical so I had to keep reassuring her we were okay and that we just need to drive over to the shoulder and everything would be okay. I just kept repeating the words over and over until she calmed down enough to do what I was telling her to do. All I could see were the cars coming and wanted OFF that highway. Someone needed to keep their head. 😦 I can't believe I was able to stay calm enough to get us out of that situation but I also didn't want to die.

The Black Rifle Coffee Company was founded by a bunch of Afghanistan and Iraq Combat Veterans, when they returned to the U.S. and finished their service to our country, they got together, and sourced some of the very best beans on the planet, they only sell their coffee beans online, I am sure you can figure out the website. I personally am not a coffee drinker myself, but I have been told, that is is as top shelf as you can get for coffee. When I served in the military, I was an aircraft mechanic, and depending on the aircraft, each can absorb certain damage, out of all of them, the one that is still in service TODAY that was designed to absorb an incredible amount of battle damage and stay in the fight is the A-10, before the A-10, it would have been the A-1, and before the A-1 was probably the P-47.

FYI, They are no longer just selling their coffee online, Walmart has been selling it for a few years now. And it is top notch, I'll never look back to Starbucks or Peet's. The Royalty roast, only sold at Walmart is really great light roast. Contrary to what people think, dark roast does not have a higher level caffeine, it loses it in the longer roasting time for Dark Roast beans. Lighter roast beans have more caffeine due to the shorter roasting time. The strong taste of Dark Roast comes from the degree of the bean roast, almost burnt, not the caffeine.

Black Rifle Coffee, run by a bunch of vets. I like their coffee, it's a little pricey though. I like their super dark roast, I can't remember the name of it, blacker than black or something like that. No, it's Beyond Black. $15.19 for a 12 oz. bag. Ward Carroll did an interview with KC, she was great. I asked a question in comments on that video and she took the time to respond to me. I always appreciated that from her. I don't think she would have been in trouble if she had chosen to eject once she got back near the base.
