The Crossbell arc, for rather obvious reasons for those who have played CS3, adds a lot to this game. It just goes to show how much these games contribute to each other.

Thank you for doing a review on this amazing game/series! I'm about 5 hours into CS3 and it feels so good to be back. I've noticed all of the small details they've added to the UI, NPC conversations, character animations, etc and it looks really good (relative to other Trails Games). I've played most of the series (not crossbell arc b/c of no localization) and it's up there with Fire Emblem and Persona for my favorite RPG series.

day it came out (i got the collector's edition) spent 9-11 hours thats 14 hours playing it only stopping for food then life can knocking "you need to go to work, you need to sleep ,you got to tidy the house" i was like NNOOO!!!! they have the 2 crossbell ones (trails of zero and trails of azure) out now on ps4 in japan literally just like 2 months ago. Its very likely they will be localized and released over here now too on ps4 :)

Trails games aren't for people who like plot point after plot point after plot point in their games. They are for people who like character development, shades of grey, fully realised world building, lore, political manoeuvres and fantastic gameplay. (Seriously, I know people call the battles 'standard JRPG affair', but I always find myself disappointed when I move onto another jrpg from Trails. The combat system of the new game never feels like it measures up to me.) It's the slow pace that allows it to hit the feels where it hurts so damn hard. It's like some people love dime novels: short, pacy action novels, and some people like long series of books which each clock in at 1k pages+. You simply couldn't tell a story on the scale of the Trails series at a quicker pace: that just comes with the genre (of which Trails is virtually the only one I can think of in video game form...). (That's not a statement on which is 'better', incidentally, it's just a personal taste thing.)

Normally I love character driven stories... but Trails of Cold Steel kind of failed to do it for me in game 1. I don't mind the graphics or art (Tokyo Xanadu used the same and I loved everything about it), but the characters barely grow because of how forced the narrative is to drag things out for 4 games. Fridge logic kicked in when I realized I hated how things turned out in CS 1 as opposed to Trails in the Sky 1 (where despite having a downer cliffhanger at least you did something more uplifting saving a COUNTRY instead of saving a school culture festival). To put in frankly, while I understand how so many people might still like Cold Steel, it personally betrayed me as early as the first game.

I can only recommend that. You will meet characters from the Crossbell series in Cold Steel III (you met some at the end of Cold Steel II, so you got some slight spoilers already), and you will certainly appreciate to know what happened in the Crossbell region before jumping in to Cold Steel III.

The game is so good that I'm trying my best not to burn through it. I played bought 1 and 2 (NG+ on both) on PS Now and immediately pre order part 3 the moment it was available. There not to many games where I can just sit down and be so pulled in to the game's story/lore/characters that I have to stop myself because I have to work in 4 hours. That type of feeling I would consistently get when I was younger and playing new JRPG's my uncle would dig up like Suikoden and final fantasy. I hope this game sells well so we can have more games like these in the west because it's so hard finding JRPG's that are series and not one-offs like Final Fantasy.

It's good you did that, because at the end of 1, you'll be playing 2 right after, I promise you. I'll also say I enjoyed 2 more than 1 and am enjoying 3 more than 2. So look forward to things getting better as you go through the series. Also, be choosy with your bonding because what you do in the bonding events carries over from 1 to 2. (Unfortunately 3 and 4 are separate because they came out for PS4)

I'm still playing it, and really enjoying it so far. I just got past the first field study. I know they call it field exercise, but let's be real here, it's basically the field studies from Cold Steel 1, and I'm okay with that, because after the roller coaster with the Erebonian Civil War breaking out and Cedirc's kidnapping and the borderline Darth Vader reveal of Chancellor Osborne being Rean's biological dad, you do need some breathing room for awhile.

You can start with cold steel 3 if you wanted since it has a recap of the first two games. But the best way would be to play cold steel 1 & 2 first, since so many characters are back. The hardcore fans will play all the legend of hero's games to get the full experience.

Well if you've already fallen in love with Estelle then that's perfect. You should definitely start with Trails in the Sky in that case. It's the beginning of the series and the arc that Estelle stars in. This series grows more and more rewarding with each entry that you play.

I started with ToCS & I don't regret it. TiTS was rather old & very slow, I don't have time to play 3 long RPGs in order to get to CS 1. Yet I freakin love CS games so much, to me they're better than any Persona or DQ game. I still gotta get CS3 but this year was insane with releases, I hope I get it soon.

Cold Steel fans need to understand that when you tell someone you can't start here you need to play the last 2 games or the last 5k games, all it does is chase away what could be new fans of the series. The characters in Trails games are definitely not groundbreaking in any way, but they ALL have personality. Not just the main characters but even NPCs have names, backstories, problems and solutions they find on their own. It makes the world feel alive and organic, because everyone has an opinion and a life that involves many aspects. And even if the characters are more or less cardboard cutouts, they are still extremely fun because of their interactions with one another. Most if not every character has something to say about another. This is evident when you do the victory screens and the characters just compliment and chat to each other. Watching all of Class VII interact with one another, as well as other combinations that people would just think off (Musse + Angelica, Ash + Kurt, Altina + Musse) just ends up rewarding.

in reguards to translation, the only major complaint i have is the messed up translation at chapter 3, rean should say something like that he feel from the wind there is a small one way corridoor and there are people at the end of it, the juna mention it's simular to tio and her ability to read the terrain, or maybe like arios since he and rean are at the same combat school, how did nisa translated it? "you know, tio is also a practitioner of the devine blade of wind" and rean say stuff like "the winds are calling, they telling us to push forward" or something wich i pushed out of my mind. crossbell dos have voice acting for the main story with it's evolution version, wich you can use with the pc port and fan translation, same with sky for every main and side quest, i dont normally like playing with "mods" on the first run, but with evolution voice files it helps so you dont need to sit through all the unvoiced text for the whole game.

I think a big Part of why Musse is so likeable is her english Voice Actor. Damm she is good. The worst thing about this Game that after the ending, you want to play directly part 4, to a degree that could cause depression for some people.

I bought the first game when it was on sale, played the beginning and could already tell I'd enjoy it, but had too many games on the go to play it then. I know that Trails of Cold Steel III will instantly be my Game of The Year. Overall this year I've mostly focused on catching up and purchasing titles from previous years I haven't had time to or money to get yet. But I knew CS3 would be a day one purchase for me, I pre-ordered the day it became available. Still have yet to get into it though because Canada Post SUCKS and have held my game at customs from the 22nd until yesterday, so the absolute earliest I can actually play the game will be Monday, however, with how Canada Post tends to be the game will likely show up on Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm losing my mind waiting for it and I'm trying to actively avoid most websites and facebook pages I'm a part of so as to avoid spoilers.

@@Tvdiet Laura is a big heavy hitter for sure. I like Fie's speed, bump it way up and she will have several turns to the enemies one turn. Plus is you equip her with the gear that gives her a high evasion and the quartz to increase her special charge rate up and you can spam her special on bosses.

After I finished TOCS1 I thought it was overrated, still think it is. I'm now playing TOCS2 2 years later and it's like meeting friends I haven't seen for a while. First game streeeeeetches itself for characterization far too much while the main story moves at snail's pace and picks up literally at the very end. I hate that. But at least I know the characters really well. Second game picks up the pace right at the beginning, at least for a bit. I just got a long warm hug from Alisa in Nord region and I can say it was all worth those 100 hours I spent in the first game. These two games were originally planned as one but it was too much to put into one so they split them up. But they didn't do a good job of it in my opinion. They left characterization in the first one while story was kept for the latter. Seems like most people don't mind but I do and it's what kept me from playing TOCS2 for so long even though I knew well that the story would this time finally move on. I bought TOCS3 on release date, btw, weird after what I've just written but I knew I had to. I only seen some previews and trailers. This is the first review I fully watched. Seeing the characters grow up and in HD with more than 15fps (I have both games on Vita) is truly something incredible. Aidios, Alisa and Emma look amazing! Can't wait to finish the second game and dive into this one. This time right after I finish TOCS2.

@@evertondohler2435 Yeah - Even I am not that poor, the PS4+game will set me back 510 Euro's (approx $580), and that's simply not affordable for me. I also have maintenance costs for my studio (DAW's+plugins+hardware), so forking out that amount of money is out of my reach. I can only pray this game will be ported to the PC, and IF that happens it won't take long. I have played the whole series (Including the fan translated Crossbell dualogy), and I would hate to see it all end at CS2 for us PC gamers.

I figured that if the localization and PC ports for the previous series sold as well as they did, III and IV would eventually land on hard drives as well. This game looks really interesting and I am very interested in playing it. I'd never even heard of this series until recently and everyone seems to be saying I shouldn't jump into this game blind, but I'm gonna totally ignore that advise.

Well - It's of course your choice, but I warn you that you will do yourself a huge disservice. I guarantee you will not enjoy the game as much as someone that has played the previous games. If you really do not want to play the previous games, than at least see some recaps from those previous games (there are several around on KZbin) before jumping into Cold Steel III. That said - I think you will enjoy the game jumping in blind, but you will feel at loss at some moments, because you don't know the importance of the characters you meet (or being re-united with). Do not forget this game is part of a series, so it's only natural you will feel lost now and often.

I have played Trails of Cold Steel 1 & 2. Just waiting on 3 to come out on PC, so i can use my save if that is allowed in 3. Until then I will play the trails in the skys games

Download the psp emualtor and get the english translation rom to play both crossbell games . I beat them both , they were so good

I can only speak for the PC versions, but both Crossbell games have a good fan translation. The GeoFront translation for Trails from Zero is just fully finished (but even the older one is not bad at all), and the fan translation for Trails to Azure is not bad at all. The games are both playable and enjoyable. I personally use the Borderless Gaming application to play the games in full screen, and they look very good (especially after setting my NVIDIA drivers to 16x Anisotropic filtering and FXAA to ON).

such a great period of time a lot of great games releashing or releashed cold steel 3 outer worlds and the legendary shemmue is back again with third installment fire embeem 3 houses and on april of 2020 ff 7 remake cyberpunk 2077 bannerlord mount and blade new tales series etc Insane

Just managed that myself on New Game Plus yesterday. The Graal didn't feel any harder to me, but the Dark Dragon's dungeon was definitely more challenging even overleveled. I hate those mirrors.

You know Legend of Heroes remind me of One Piece (and i'm not saying this because they are respectively my favourite videogames series and manga) because they can introduced and hype a character at one point, and use (and develop) him several saga later (just look at Osborne) that really give the impression of a living world Cold Steel is the favourite saga of my favourite serie (played each of them 3 times) but i'm on PC so i have to wait for the 3 and 4 :'(

Is it required to play the Crossbell duology all the way before playing CSIII? I have JP imports of them for my PSP, but playing them through in JP despite having an English script is kinda tedious.

If the question is " required " than no since most of the time when they refer to cross bell stuff they give a brief rundown on it but it would be recommended to play them so you know terms used. How I see it is it doesn't hurt to play cs3 while you wait for the fan translation to be completed.

It isn't required, but there is a decent portion of CS3 spent in crossbell, and if you haven't played the crossbell games you probably won't enjoy that part all that much (or, at least, I know I didn't. It might not bother you though.)

I pity all the casual RPG fans obsessed with FF franchise. FF has been dead to me ever since Square Enix took over every FF after 10 is bad especially compared to Trails. Falcom is finally starting to get the attention it deserves after all this time.
