Pegachess I'm not so sure. Some of the most compelling worlds heavily base their lore on religion, if not borrow entirely. Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Okami, Jade Empire, Final Fantasy 6 and 7, Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (You can't tell me the two Pokemon on the covers are not Leviathan and Behemoth). I mean sure, I agree that games don't need a heavy religious base, but I think having real life symbolism in these games connects our own real world to these fictitious ones a little bit better than if they lacked them. It indirectly expands the lore itself by adding a new layer of intrigue.

First off, as a born-again Christian, this video totally made me all excited, it's cool to see all sorts of religions given a nod to in games, but since Christianity is considered so "controversial", it's rare to find it. There's some similarities between Catholicism and Christianity, but there's also differences. The church I attend is non-denominational, so we have a bit of all sorts of believers in there. Anyway as for the video itself, that's what I always thought, but the super religious old-school people in our church would sometimes flip when I would wear my Triforce shirt, with the OoT artwork inside of it. I always saw the subtle connections, yet the overly religious told me I would be looking for something that was trying to "deceive" me. Now with this video and the matching scripture, I can defend myself a bit better. I'm not that good at speaking as I am writing my thoughts out ;;
@swanson28304 жыл бұрын
I realize this is a super-old comment, but pointing out a minor correction to the comment on Catholicism (as I am Catholic myself). Catholicism is chronologically the original practice of Christianity, so there aren't just similarities; it is the root all other forms of Christianity ultimately branched from. Differences over specific theology and practice simply arose within Christianity over time, which caused various degrees of schism and division between the resulting denominations.

You wrote this very good. And you are telling exactly how I feel. I remember when my mama tried to persuade me that Zelda was of the Devil when I was a kid because of the Red Dragon that was on Wind Waker. But something in my spirit never agreed that Zelda was anything of the Devil. Granted they speak of other gods and stuff, I always knew they had to put that in the game due to sensitive consumers not wanting a certain religion to be established in the games. However, none of that blinded me to the obvious Christian spirit in this game. And I recognized that before I even gave me life fully to Christ. Once I gave my life fully to Christ, there was a lot of stuff Holy Spirit moved me to stop watching, playing or entertaining. Zelda was not one of them. I stopped listening to worldly music, watching worldly movies, playing worldly games, but Zelda and actually quite a few Nintendo games, I did not feel the Spirit command me to leave those games alone. And Zelda has actually been a great encouragement in my walk with Christ, as the battle against evil on Zelda helps me stay encouraged in battling evil in real life. With the Master Sword being the only Sword that can destroy evil, it reminds me so much of the Word of God. The Bible says the Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit. The Master Sword reminds me of the Word of God, the Sword of the Spirit. You get all types of swords and weapons on Zelda to help you on your journey but the Master Sword is the only weapon that will make you beat the game cause it's the only sword you can use to destroy the darkness. In the same way, there are many books and stuff in the world, like college books and things of that sort that helps give us wisdom to get skills and things to help us get good jobs and stuff so it can help us in life, but we cannot beat this battle of life without the main book the Bible, because the Bible is the only Book that has the Power to cast off darkness, just like the Master Sword

Hey GG, you just made my day - no, my week! As a hard-core Zelda fan, but also a Christian, I've speculated about this for YEARS. I grew up playing the original games, so I was very familiar with the cross on Link's shield (and all over Zelda 2), the "Prince of Darkness" title for Ganon, the omnipotent and omniscient Triforce symbolizing the Trinity, the Sanctuary etc. And I could give you others (but you've probably already found those). But I was thoroughly convinced that the symbolism didn't stop with Link to the Past. I loved that game, but was bummed that they added the "new" back-story of goddesses - mostly because of my own faith, but also cuz my dad was one of those that thought the original games were laced with satanism (and on the surface this was worse). I figured they had to do that, because as you said it's a "touchy subject". So I never read up on that aspect of the story, and just focused on exploring, solving puzzles, kicking butt, taking names and saving the princess. But what shocked me about your video was that you found MORE - even in the new games! Looking at how you described the goddesses' personalities, the creation story of Hyrule's universe, Hylia's taking on human form to save Hyrule from Demise etc. it definitely seems to exist to a certain extent. It's a bit more obscure, but I was amazed to find out it didn't end with Link to the Past. I know this is just a theory, but still, it was cool to know I'm not the only one who could see it. Thanks! Now to answer your question about what the Zelda franchise would look like if it didn't take the direction it did, sadly I think it would not have done well. Look at the Narnia books, which have much more obvious Christian symbolism; they've been banned from some schools because they seem to be laced with evil and satanism (sound familiar?). Sure they made a couple (awesome) movies, and even some (far from awesome) video games, but compare them to Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings and Narnia is, well, not so popular. I'm as big a Narnia fan as I am a Zelda fan, but I wouldn't want the Zelda franchise to go the way of the Narnia franchise. Oh wait - did you mean how would the STORY have changed? I have way too many ideas to answer that! :D

All the christian symbolism is located in the downfall timeline where the goddesses seemed to abandon Hyrule thus they turned to a new religion in hopes of a better future but it was relics of the old religion that saved them in the end. I think in a link between worlds there is a resurgence in belief in the goddesses after a link from a link to the past saves Hyrule using relics from the old religion. you'll see something similar in btow were many people stop actively worshiping hylia due to the calamity.

This is natural that a game featuring medieval setup, with a lone (archetype of) knight in a venture to fight a lord of pure evil is based on christianity since medieval age is all about it. But here is my point (about Nintendo, the industry and those who are offended that a game MAY BE feature a reference to a religion); why? Christianity, and other religions, are the roots of our cultures, why a videogame cant feature them as background element? There are many movies and books who feature them (with more or less "respect") and nobody cares, but a cross on a shield and everyone loses his mind. I would agree that there is a problem if the main purpose of a game is to beat up representatives of a certain religion, but in this case it is simply an evocation (and with respect on top of that).

My condolences at the loss of your cat, and thank you for the fun video. I've known about the religious imagery in early Zelda, including that very explicit prayer picture of Link. As a Christian myself I've always wanted to ask the developers what their reasons were for creating that. Well, my theory is, that the first Zelda games tried to emulate the high fantasy version of medieval European setting, with all the medieval tropes, Darknuts wear typical knight armor, Link's is pretty much based on elves,while Ganon and Moblins are the Nintendo's interpretation of a classic Orc, Hyrule is obviously a feudal monarchy, Master Sword is clearly a nod to Excalibur and Arthurian mythos, etc. And of course, in Medieval Europe, Christianity had a very important role. The church was powerful and influential, all science and philosophy came out of universities run by clerics, Art was created for the God's glory, and don't get me started on Crusades. Whole medieval era was centered around religion, and since the Land of Hyrule is based on Medieval Europe, more or less, there ought to be christian symbols and iconography.

You're probably 100% right. I'm not Christian myself but I am Buddhist and there have been endless games with Buddhist symbolism that then have to make up a religion because Buddhists have gotten angry over just...being there in the game. I don't really see what's so wrong about allowing characters to represent a religion or just take some tokens from it for depth. I do like it when games have their own gods because then you can make all sorts of connections as to where they got their inspiration, but it makes me sad when they get rid of real-life religions in favour of avoiding any controversy.
@jamesregli47547 жыл бұрын
I think any direct connections between Christianity and the legend of Zelda are more or less simple influences. Early on it is clear that the legend of Zelda was creating a world inspired by the Medieval period of Europe, therefore Link would have Christian apparel and likeness to that of those who lived in and during that time period. All of those references are in line with just living in the medieval time period with any of it Christian references. As far as the fact that there are three goddesses do not reflect well to the Christian trinity, even when you stretch it, but it could have clearly been an influence for the idea of having 3 goddesses and such, but is not a direct reference at all.

Sad to hear that Jade has died. 21 years is very old for a cat and she seemed to have had a very happy life. RIP Jade kitty. You will be missed.

This is something I've felt in my bones for years, practically ever since the first time I played OoT at a young age. I've held many a wild theory and still do. It creates a foreground on my own beliefs on how the divine acts and may be represented. I once was full Christian, converted to Pagan and now more just spiritually open than any label could grant me. I see the Divine's touch in a lot of things. A lot from cultural representation and reference, but perhaps a lot more. In any case, thank you Gaijin Goombah. You've voiced what I've felt and talked about for years. You are loved and appreciated :)

I will extend a little more the connections In the story of Adam and Eve they were casted from paradise because they disobeyed god and god didn't want them to eat from the tree of life and gain eternal life. God put a flaming sword and 2 cherubim to guard and block the entrance of heaven. Genesis 3:22-24. In some instances it is said that when Jesus was crucified the sword was removed and the gate were opened. This look pretty similar to when link removes the master sword and opens the gate to the sacred realm and accidentally lets ganondorf enter it and take the trifoce gaining lots of power. Even the two cherubim could be the two sages that give power to the sword as seen in wind waker. Another interpretation which I like more is the inclusion of the archangel Uriel. Uriel often portrayed as an archangel of god, sometimes as an angel or a cherubim, its name means "God is my light" is the one that handles a flaming sword, guards paradise's entrance, and is the one who watches "over thunder and terror" usually he acts like a guide to followers of god and help them. He is portrayed as feminine with a sword in on hand and light in the other and sometimes a book that represent wisdom. You can pretty much guess who I'm associating it with. The goddess Hylia often being represented by light is the one that carries the sword which eventually becomes the master sword. The loftwing are her wings and she rules over the land of Skyloft and she is the one who watches over Demise. After she becomes Zelda she inherits the triforce of wisdom and guides and help link through his adventures. Nice you did this video. Don't worry about talking about religion. Is all about the culture in the end. Keep the good work.

Hey Gaijin Goombah :D I'm a huge fan of your videos, the cultural analysis is super accurate and I love your editing style. I would be honored if you'd take your time to answer 2 questions :> 1. Do you think there is a significant difference between the words "Weeaboo" and "Shinnichi (親日)"? I'll be studying japanology (if that is the English term) later this year because although I like Japan's popular culture in form of anime and video games, I adore the country's cultural origins, its history aswell as its society, the language, the history and nature of Shinto aswell as Buddhism, Japanese politics etc etc. However everyone I talk to (be it friends or other people that don't know me) just waves me off as "just another weeaboo". I struggled to find a word that describes the love not only for Japanese pop culture but also all the other points I've listed but came across the aforementioned term of "Shinnichi" not long ago. So I'd really like to know whether and, if yes, how much of a difference there is between the terms weeaboo and shinnichi. 2. Do you know the game "Muramasa: The Demon Blade" and, if yes, do you plan on making a video about it? I love the game but due to me not being educated enough about Japanese mythology (yet) I could only scratch the surface of all the big and small hints and nods towards japan's cultural history. If you're still reading this, thank you so much for your awesome and educating videos, keep up the great work! Greetings from Germany =)

At the end of the day Gaijin Goombah you did a good job! But honestly I always thought the Tri Force was just the trinity. But since I'm not very familiar with the Zelda series I never thought about the three Goddesses connection to the the three. And I applaud you having the courage to talk about this in the first place.

I have to wholeheartedly agree with the parallels. Even though starting with OoT the series started drifting away from overt Christian symbolism, the concepts are still clearly utilized. With Skyward Sword, as you pointed out, the series seems to be utilizing some very overtly Christian themed concepts. I think maybe that Nintendo wants Zelda to have its own world lore distinct from the real world, there's also going to be a lot of inspiration drawn from the real world. When writing fantasy, one is going to some degree draw from the history of Europe, and if you're doing that, then why not take up aspects from the religion that helped shape the last two thousand years of culture in the western hemisphere. I'm glad you did this video Gaijin. I've always enjoyed the looks you take into various cultures from around the world, and as Christian myself, am glad you took the time to delve into the lore of Christianity, and like all of your other videos really bring out the positives, and promote the positive discussion of culture.

Hey christian dude here and longtime fan! I discovered this similarities years ago through my first zelda games and noticed the similarities as a kid and I thought it was awesome! I definitely see media using judeo-christian themes as just aesthetic purpose or to give it a "twist" but seeing the early zelda game using christian imagery in a good light was pleasant to see. Thanks for making this video!

Wasn't Hylia her own Goddess, via Skyward Sword? Ya can't mix her in with Nayru to prove a point. Otherwise, interesting video.
@MrsTippett7 жыл бұрын
I agree that you can't just mix the two goddesses as one since they are indeed two separate beings, but I think he was simply trying to draw a parallel between Hylia and Zelda from SS since they both have very similar circumstances (God/goddess being incarnated as a human/Hylian).
@DanielQuasar7 жыл бұрын
Jennifer Tippett I agree and see what you are saying. For me though, it takes it away from being a trinity and makes it about four people. Nayru has no component for the mortal aspect, so bringing in a fourth character, who existed alongside the original 3, to give her one just muddys it up. Interesting side note addition, if you take into consideration the ideas that Christianity is based off stolen aspects of other religions, it really solidifies the idea that the use of these symbols is purely aesthetic. A means to an end.
@Xunkun7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's.... inconsistent. Well, there's plenty of spirits and what're arguably demigods in the Zeldaverse. Like the arcangels, or Pyramidhead and Vatiel being lower beings compared to Alessa-- but still Gods-- in _Silent Hill_: i think it was more meant that way. Like in Majora's Mask, I think the fan consensus is that the "Goddess of Time" that gets namedropped twice at the end of the introductory cycle is either a different goddess, or I think it was Nayru that people think it is.
@CloverBell137 жыл бұрын
I think the reason Hylia is often mentioned alongside Nayru is because Hylia's (reincarnated Hylia/Zelda) decedents are the ONLY ones who posses the triforce of wisdom.
@kabrozkabroz7 жыл бұрын
Hmm I guess to figure out the answer to this we have to determine whether Hylia is of equal hierarchy to either of the three goddesses or is their subordinate

Wow. Good job with the research. I'm actually most impressed with the research. Most people would just stop with barely touching the surface, but you actually went deeper in than most people would care to go, and I think that's really cool when you do that. Regardless of the faith, it's nice to know some people are willing to look just a little deeper than most into everything for knowledge. Keep up the good work.

I think a lot of Christians are needlessly afraid of analogy. Being Catholic myself, I find your theory really interesting, not blasphemous. Sure, sometimes an analogy is stretched too far or can have implications of things that aren't true, but, used correctly, they can be really powerful teaching tools. Plus, they can make fun stories, just like The Legend of Zelda. :) I think you did good on your research too, by the way. I will add that the Holy Spirit is also represented by fire at times as well as wind, both of which are present at Pentacost (look at the early chapters of the book of Acts for that story).

Just every single time it's used. In New Testament Greek the term used is Pneuma, which is etymologically linked to Pneo which means breath or wind. In Old Testament Hebrew Ruwach is used for both wind and spirit depending on context.

Considering there are actual, real-life versions of the Jedi Order, I get the feeling people would actually join a Hylian Church, if one existed. I don't get it. If you know these ideas were made by humans (such as George Lucas), let alone within the last 40 years, then why would anyone possibly think it's a true religion? People are weird sometimes.

Hey Gaijin, I always look forward to seeing you pop up on my feed. You give some really good insight and offer a lot of great commentary and such. This one is no exception. I am a Christian, and I feel you were very respectful in this video. I also feel very strongly that the early Zelda games were inspired by and influenced by Christianity to an extent. While we mostly think of the Western iteration of Christianity, it is the most inclusive religion of all time, unconcerned with the status of your birth or the things of your past. ^-^ It's very interesting seeing how people of different cultural backgrounds practice Christianity and how people on the outside perceive it.
