That's why I started doing these videos in the first place. I was finding ragtime music in game soundtracks, but none of the people you could find playing them had a clue as to how ragtime should be played. I thought that the music would sound so much better in the hands of an actual ragtime pianist. As Tom can sight-read and embellish so well, he was the obvious choice.

I personally think Tom is one of the probably less than two dozen living pianists who really re-create the ragtime and 1920s eras when they want to. Very few people have the technique AND the knowledge of past styles AND the FEEL to be able to get all these right. That's extremely rare. Most active ragtime pianists today (NOT naming names) play from either a (modern, not true romantic) classical piano perspective, or a (usually modern, but sometimes trad jazz) jazz piano perspective... very occasionally a rock or blues perspective. (Frankly, I LIKE those that come from the latter as to me they have an earthier feel that is much more like many original old time pianists IMO). Tom is again one of the very few who comes from what I feel to be a true authentic ragtime perspective and he has his own distinctive authentic voice, which is the way the old original ragtime pianists all had, as proven by the numerous extant recordings... each pianist played with their own recognizable style, touch and approach that was different than the other pianists (sometimes subtly, sometimes quite different). Tom is another in that grand tradition. Most other living 'authentic' ragtime or trad jazz pianists active today are quite facile imitators of long-dead pianists (mostly now-famous pianists like Thomas Fats Waller, Donald Lambert, etc, although many other famous pianists who left hundreds or thousands of recordings or rolls, go un-appreciated, un-studied and un-imitated, for no good reason). Some have even gotten so they can improvise admirably well in these particular styles, or in a limited synthesis of a few old styles from that period (with lots of borrowing from other styles of later years). To me, Tom doesn't really IMITATE anyone but has quite capably synthesized various approaches into his own recognizable style. That is extremely hard to do in this day and age where one is not only bombarded with contemporary music from all directions at all times (except in places where there is no music), but also, most ragtime pianists etc that you can hear today at festivals and in trad jazz bands, either don't attempt to play anything like the older pianists, or just slavishly copy them (especially, again, just the same few and not usually any off-the-beaten-track pianists), and their recordings are (IMO) a wasteland of this kind of approach which, despite my admiration for these folks AS (great) PEOPLE and friends, caused me to mostly stop listening to most of them play, about 10 years ago and focus instead on the old recordings and piano rolls of the original (and especially hundreds of not-presently-studied) greats, as I wanted to learn the real way of doing things that was as rich and multifaceted as is now possible today, without going down the extremely-worn path of copying a small handful of the same artists. I can count on maybe barely the fingers of both hands, the pianists I think are alive today (that I KNOW ABOUT and HAVE HEARD) who sound like real old-time pianists, BUT not like any particular one (other than themselves), AND are consistently good. I'm certainly not one of those, But- Tom definitely is. I think Tom probably has better technique than I do. I'm speaking in the present tense, since despite his accident and incapacitation, I'm pulling for him as much as everyone else and hoping he makes as close to a full recovery as possible.

Nicely said. Tom is such a unique piano player in that he's so technically skilled in a less common genre.

Tom had lessons with a local piano teacher in Nor Cal but I don't know their name. I don't know how many years of lessons he had, or how far he got in classical music. But he seems to have quite a good piano technique. Maybe not concert-level, but he has been able to use it to play some extremely difficult ragtime pieces and to show an incredible amount of stamina playing for literally hours at a time. I've personally witnessed this at ragtime festivals. His most difficult novelty pieces like "Treble Trouble", "One Too Many", (the aptly named) "Fumble Fingers" etc and many others, are real finger-tanglers and are certainly not intermediate-level but advanced-level piano. Maybe not DIRECTLY comparable to a Chopin or Liszt etude in having extremely fast passagework / gigantic arpeggiated right-hand leaps etc (the left, of course, has the normal ragtime leaps ;) ), but IMO are more consistently texturally daunting than many classical pianists are used to, although the REAL old-time pop pianists of the 'teens and 'twenties fairly consistently played using these kinds of textures as proven by their audio recordings.

It's amazing to be able to improvise like that.

Turning a song that plays when a hero dies into a Ragtime song.Beautiful.

Actually this song literally is the ending track to Zelda which is inherently upbeat and kinda ragtimey sounding, its not the game over theme. The game over theme is actually just the very beginning part of the ending theme though, so I see how you thought this.

Conroy Nathan Yes, yes it is. All the tunes played by the individual band members are tunes from previous Zelda games.
