Super Mario Land 2 Ending Theme sight-read by Tom Brier

This was the last thing played at the May 2013 Mother Lode Ragtime Society meeting, hence his comment at the beginning. You get an idea of how his sight-reading works when the fast bit begins and it takes a few measures before he realizes he's playing it with the wrong rhythm, then restarts the section in the correct one-step rhythm.
That really shows how he only glances at the music enough to figure out the melody and the chord sequence, maybe the basic idea of the bass line, and then simply improvises from there.
The improvisation is taken to a farther level later on when he switches it to a minor key and plays it as a waltz.

At one point in the video you hear an odd sound that makes us laugh and I say, "bad strings!" There was an A-flat on the piano that was missing two strings, so it had just one string sounding. Hopefully those strings have been fixed since then, as we're meeting here at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium again tomorrow night!

Yeah it appears he's been in a heavy road traffic accident and has some level of brain injury. I just discovered his videos today, I can't believe how gifted he is.

Yes, he was nearly killed on August 6th when his car was struck from behind at high speed by a large pickup while stopped at the end of a line of traffic on a freeway offramp. His car was crushed and it took more than an hour for crews to cut him out. He has what may be permanent brain damage. Currently, he is semi-aware and sometimes reacts to jokes spoken to him. He moves his left arm but his right side is mostly inert. He can not speak.

I often write test screenplays for myself, generally for practice or just because something inspires me to do so. Tom’s accident was such a heartbreaking thing to hear about, and I’ve been trying to follow his recovery to the best of my ability. Seeing the progression he has made so far (as well as listening to his music, both covers and original pieces) is a spark that lights a flame of creativity and hope within me. Yeah, he's just reading the score for the first time. He's been doing that for about 35 years, especially this kind of music. He reads the melody and sees enough of the left hand to note the chord sequence, then improvises the rest. That's why you see he isn't playing exactly what's on the pages.

I always come back to this video when I need a good cry. It's my favourite of Tom's sight readings, he put so much feelings into a Mario song, bad strings and all. Sometimes I'm happy when I watch this, sometimes I'm sad, but Tom's playing always leaves me in a better place. Such a wonderful human. Hope he's doing better. That is correct. His hands are OK, but he can't really use his right arm/hand too much yet. He recently was able to touch his face with his right hand for the first time since the accident in August. He can move his left side quite well and has played a left-hand part on piano with visiting friends. He is bed-ridden/wheelchair-bound and cannot speak, though he is trying to re-learn how. He does understand everything you say to him though, so it's more a matter of physical movement that's been damaged; his thoughts, intelligence and personality all seem intact.

I'm a silent fan who have loved his interpretations since this channel started to upload videos (when I was a younger, I always searched on KZbin "Mario Piano" because I love Mario's music and that instrument) . I want to believe in miracles and hope that Tom can play beautifuly again. Life can be so tough sometimes. Tom made me love this kind of music, rag time specifically. @@andybaldman no… most people know what a sight read is, but what they dont know is he is reading 2 different sheets at the same time for each hand, and timing the tempos to some random ass missing notes in the reading. on top of this, hes a swing player, and the music happens to have incorporated his style. HIS EARLY 1900S SALOON STYLE. on top of this, the motherfucker never even HEARD THE SONGS BEFORE. Sight reading is one thing, but to perform a song at that accuracy better than the guy whos heard the song his whole life just his first time hearing it is just other worldly.

I'm not a piano player, but I memorized all of the fingerings to this song, and putting it all together is SO FRIGGEN HARD. My total time is 9 minutes (still not 7) and I've been practicing this for about 1 full year now. Not to mention, he's SIGHT READING(edit: ***improvising) this. I absolutely adore Tom's sight readings, and out of all of the ones I've seen this one gives me the impression he genuinely loved the tune. Keeper1st, do you ever get any feedback from Tom as far as the "quality" of the tunes goes? I'm just wondering if he's ever shown any particular fondness of one or more of the songs you've had him try.

He has willingly played "K.K. Ragtime" several times again, and both that one and the Yoshi's Island Athletic Theme became part of the Raspberry Jam Band's repertoire. So those are definitely high on his list. He also has said he likes how the Angry Birds Theme turned out, but that's more for what he did with the suggestion to turn it into a silent-movie soundtrack, I think.

The owner of this channel converts the music to piano and Tom brings them to life. I didn't play this game but it hit extra hard for me too. It's got that innocent 90s game sound, but it's got that ending theme goodbye feeling to it. So it feels like those happier times are saying goodbye we are past.
