Back in the day, my father was a jazz aficionado, and I believe he mentioned to me once how he caught one of CP's gigs when the latter performed live in L.A. For myself, I usually associate "Bird" through the five-piece saxophone group, Supersax, and their debut album tribute to Parker, which I spin on occasion. (I always crank-up the volume on "Ko-Ko"!)

Awesome! Most of my students absolutely loved Bird’s jazz & enjoyed learning how to write Parker-style compositions in our university in Queensland. ❤🇦🇺 My dad, also a lecturer, loved improv on his piano accordion & nicknamed our cat, Bird & our dog, Parker. The 2 animals were inseparable with Parker depressed when Bird died. 😔

I've heard the name, but I'm not a fan of jazz so the rest is obscure knowledge.---Trivia: in the 60's, we always used "Camarillo" as an indicator someone was 'crazy'. I've visited the hospital on 2 occasions on field trips with the Future Nurses Club, sponsored by our high school nurse. Field trips were much easier to fund in the 60's.

Parker’s story couldn’t be more stereotypical. Irresponsible father who abandons family. Left to be ‘raised’ by a single working mother doing her best but with limited resources. With minimal parental supervision, falls in with similar others in crime. Becomes an alcoholic and a heroin addict. Taxpayer funded hospitalization & treatment are just a waste of time & money. Aptitude and talent in a field where making a living is typically iffy and dependent on subjective opinion rather than on an objective correct answer. Possible psychological aversion to his own culture in preference for a non-black woman. Personal weaknesses and failures lead to old before his time and early death. For some reason the reputation of performers is greatly enhanced by dying young, often a sure boost to legendary status. Same stale script that could be taken straight out of a Sociology textbook.

We cannot underestimate the tragedies of life that are rooted in fatherlessness which is greatest in the black community.
